My Purpose My family system has a tremendous influence on my decision of becoming a social worker. My family has carried great pride in their ability to help others in need. My parents always taught me that the greatest gift you have is the capacity to help others. They have set phenomenal standards for my brother and I to follow. I am a strong believer that everyone has a calling and purpose in life. My purpose in life is to help the less fortunate and individuals in need. I will provide the hope that people need, the resource, and guidance in their difficult moments. I want to improve and make a difference in our society's quality of life. There is no grader gratification for me, then knowing you’re responsible for a person’s happiness. …show more content…
I am kind, caring, non-judgmental and open-minded. It’s important to have these characteristics in order to empathize with your clients. I will encounter a variety of situations that will required me to be open-minded to understand. You can’t exhibit any signs of judgmental thoughts when you’re working with clients. Just because sometimes you might not agree with a person decision, doesn’t entitle you to treat them poorly. I respect and admire the diversity of values, heritages, and customs there is in social work. As a military wife, I have the opportunity to travel the world. Traveling provides me with the knowledge of different culture and their norms. It’s an honored to make friends, and learn different cultures from everyone I meet. I find joy in being able to build new relationships outside of my own culture. As a social worker, I will have the advantage that I’ve learned and work with different cultures. I look at everyone for what we are, humans. All humans deserve respect and the same equal opportunities no matter of their heritages, values, and customs. It’s critical to have respect for everyone, especially when working within different cultures. As a social worker, you need to be fair and impartial with your …show more content…
My biggest obstacle was my fear, I allowed it to get in the way of my goals and dreams. I was afraid of disappointing my family and myself with failure. The true failure would be not facing my fears and not going after my dreams. There is quote that says” The tragedy of life is not death, but what we allow to die inside of us while we live”. I enjoy this quote because it encourages me to go after what I believe in. I used to carry my fear so loyally that I didn’t allow myself to live. I was just complaisant with my life; I didn’t dare to challenge myself. I was constantly building roadblocks and excuses as to why I shouldn’t pursue my dreams. I am still challenging myself every day to reach my full potential. As I overcome my fears by challenging myself, I am a step closer to my dreams. I told myself it was time to be a leader and not a follower. Leaders are those who develop the ability to inspire and influence others. I will be the leader in my life and to others, in the absences of guidance. I made the decision to start school again and find the resources I need to accomplish my dreams. Fear is a choice. I will not find contentment until I am a successful social
Life has its twists and turns, but my overall life goal is simple, help others. I want to make an impact on others life, even if it is a small change. For instance, being able to hold a pencil is the difference between a student being able to graduate from Kindergarten and not be able to continue on to first grade. Being a Pediatric occupational therapist will help me make an impact on children at a very young age. Even small changes can have a large impacts, which is why I want to be that change for others.
In this paper, I will assess my identity and my personal history and how it relates to social work professions. I first address my personal history and cultural background, where I came from, as well as my experience in working in the community. I then talk about my overall strengths, both in personal and professional lives. My strengths are listening skills, open-mindedness, respect for diversity and eagerness to learn and improve my weaknesses. Afterward, I discuss my weaknesses, such as nonassertive communication skill and low self-esteem problems, and how I plan to address these issues.
Who I identify as, including identifying as a social worker once I graduate, will have some level privilege and power attached to the chosen identities. Gelfand, Sillivan, and Steinhouse (2002) noted that there are may dimensions that influence our personal and professional relationships with others, and these dimensions shape how we see and interact with, include or exclude them, and ways that we oppress or discriminate against them. As a social worker whose clients share my same identity, we may benefit by my having a shared understanding of cultural norms and expectations to reach a common goal. For clients who share commonalities with me, we may benefit by being able to work more collaboratively and possibly a more trusting relationship than one that must be built over time. However, just as similarities can be empowering, I must remember that the client knows best despite our shared identities that may speak otherwise.
After this assignment I have learned that Department of Social Services provides a lot of different services to those in need. Just from hearing and reading stories those who work in the field of Social Services aren’t always given a good rep, especially those who work in Child Protective Services. From doing this interview I was pleasantly surprised as to how much work Social Workers do to provide children with a safe and stable environment. There is a lot that goes into what they do every day. I have always known I want to work with children.
If a social worker were living on-base and extremely active in the military community, there would be a higher chance of seeing their clients or past clients. By using the on-base facilities, such as the commissary, library, fitness center, church, school, bowling center, etc., and being involved with any volunteer work, one might cross paths with a client. However, most of the work Ms. Flores does is through workshops and presentations, not so much case work, so I wonder if that would make a
My belief is that interventions can be put in place along with social programs giving them the best opportunity to flourish. Another population that holds a special place in my heart is the geriatric population. I believe that it my duty to help the population that has once cultivate our society to adjust to and cope with problems they may experience. In addition to working with children and geriatrics I have also worked with people who were diagnosed with Post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer 's disease to name a few. These experiences have allowed me to understand the role of a social worker, as I have opportunity to be exposed to multi-disciplinary treatment teams.
The Profession of Social Work as a Career Goal Graduating from high school, I have always had a passion working with kids. I never put into thought exactly what I wanted to do with kids, all I knew was that I wanted to work with kids. At first, my career choice was to become a midwife. There were several complications down the road, in which I could no longer pursue that career choice.
I want to strive to be a better person, so I could make a change in a young person’s life and know when I go home on a night, that I made a difference and that's why I want to pursue my career as a social worker. When I realized that I wanted to be a social worker, I was in my junior year of high school. I knew I wanted to help people, children especially, but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to go into. I thought I wanted to be in Neonatology or another profession like it. When I first witnessed a social worker, I was getting a treatment in the hospital and saw a social worker working with a family who child had a broken pelvis.

The primary mission of social workers is to meet the fundamental needs of every person, especially the ones with special needs such as those who are oppressed, vulnerable and the people living in poverty. I am also able to implement a range of interventions based on a comprehensive client assessment. I also have the ability to apply social work knowledge and theory to practice using critical thinking in a practice approaches and decisions. It also gives me the ability to engage in social work practice that is sensitive to issues of culture, ethnicity, religion, race, class, sexual orientation, age, gender, and physical and mental abilities. It also instill in me the appropriate and the effective communication skills. I am also able to demonstrate self-discipline, the ability to reflect upon and resolve ethical dilemmas.
For as long as I can remember, I have possessed a desire to help people, especially those who are less fortunate than me. This trait along with life experiences are what drew me to want to pursue a career in social work. I want to be available to provide support to people when they have nowhere else to turn. My experiences in social work have taught me to celebrate the small victories just as much as the big.
I chose this career path because I love working with people and positively impacting them. At college I will be earning a degree while learning how to adapt to life changes and bettering myself. After I earn my degree, my second goal is to raise a big happy family. By being financially stable with my own college degree, I will be
When there’s a chance for me to work with a culture I haven’t interacted with before, I try to do a little research before our initial meeting. Being exposed to different cultures creates a well-rounded social worker, who will take more into consideration when working with
