The work I have produced throughout this semester reflects the growth I have achieved in my writing. This class was one of the most productive I have been able to take so far during my time at John Jay, and I am glad that the work that I have produced can be public through my online portfolio. There were three major assignments in the class other than the portfolio, and each contributed to my learning in different ways. The first assignment, the informative report, was where our class first learned writing and APA conventions that we either were not familiar with or had not mastered at that point. Citations were still totally alien to most of us, as high school did not prepare us for having to actually give credit for the information they have found. This allowed students a way to actually shape the information in their own way, and in their own words, rather than …show more content…
Having read some of the drafts of my peers, it is clear that many had been writing too vaguely, or too generally, and had not really been addressing the issue they were writing about other than on a summarizing level. Many students had great claims, but weak evidence, and through such peer reviews I was able to reflect on the weaknesses of my own work. It was through this that I understood how properly develop my ideas into a coherent and logical work, and where I understood how to apply Aristotle’s three modes of persuasion: ethos, pathos, and logos. Pathos being the most important aspect, as I realized that the only way to have an interesting paper was to have it be written interestingly as well. Not quirky or with cliched phrases, but infusing the paper with the same passion that I had about the topic itself. Looking over my work, I can see the leap in articulation between the informative report and the argumentative essay, and I became much more confident for the final
It was never about a hearing good, academic paper. Sure, that is a part of any English-related class, but this was not Professor Cindy’s main focus. Instead, the class prioritized hardening students’ writing ability in and outside the academic profession. Through the class’s intentional format to promote brainstorming, small-group engagement, and reflection, I was able to overcome my inability to adapt to
In putting together my portfolio, I could definitely see that I have made an incredible progress from the foundation of this class. My practice of grammar, words and the general structure of my papers has improved massively. Reflecting on my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, as well as things I have learned in my own writing process is a big accomplishment.
Throughout the term there has been many writing assignments —big or small— that helped reflect my writing process or the process itself. In the beginning of the course I felt like I was an “ok” writer, but lacked some skills such as: organization, sentence variety, and vocabulary. Also, I did not like to write and had a feeling of dislike when forced to write. I felt like I improved on everything I wanted and was seen throughout the semester. I know how to organize my ideas, the worksheets given in class to work on sentence variety really helped, and vocabulary was built on some level.
When reflecting on this school year I see how much I have improved. From my first writing to now. I see that now I write more fluently. I have learned how to write in MLA and APA formatting. I have learned how to delegate myself from distractions when writing.
My instructor Jennifer Jackson said this time “ Bravo! This is one of the strongest revisions I’ve seen yet.” This essay gave me so much confidence and made me feel I can actually write something interesting. Also, I sent my paper to The Writing Center, after I submitted my paper to my instructor to see any other mistakes I could have to improve my writing skills.
While I do know some of the rules, due to my previous English teachers in school, there is still much that I do not know. But, through the course of this past semester I have learned a great deal about different and new rules. This class has taught me a great deal about writing and how to correctly write an essay. Writing is a system of many rules and is a way for people to express their creativity. This class has given me much room to express myself creatively and gain more knowledge.
My expectations coming into the course were high and remained high throughout the duration of the course. The essays I wrote in the class really challenged me to progress in my writing skills. The illustration essay really served as an example of what not to do when writing at a college level. My approach of the essay was really misunderstood and grammatically incorrect.
My journey in this English 3001 course during the past ten weeks, and over the course of taking is English class I have grown and learned more that I thought it is necessary for me to know as a student. I have improved in my overall writing skills because if you look at my second in-class essay and the rest of my essay you will see that I have made progress and improvement compare to my diagnostic essay and the first in-class essay. Moreover, now that I have completed the English course my skills are better that I am capable to meet the university standard writing requirements. This English course additionally taught me how powerful the composed word and language can be. This quarter my ability to compose essays and express my thoughts, ideas,
Even though it is a bit messy at first everything comes together because all of my ideas are there as a base point. Along with that another thing that had a huge impact on me this semester was sentence structure. Just the workshops we did in class when we moved sentenced around and how simple word changes can give the sentence or phrase a whole new meaning really intrugies me. That is also what I needed help with the most this ssememster. I feel that I grew a lot in that area, but there is still a lot to improved because with writing you are never done.
In the beginning of this writing course, my knowledge toward this subject was not too strong. However, I have gained not only a significant amount of learning material, but also a new found pleasure for writing and grammar. I learned how to communicate with clarity and precision, and also how to make decisions (grammar, diction and word choice) appropriate to situation and audience. In the beginning of this course with having to do project one, I did not know what was expected of the teacher so I did it how I thought it was going sound right and “look” good. Little did I know that my essay did not follow the guidelines and that I was not good at describing things like I assumed, I was.
1.) I feel like I am doing good in this course. I have completed my reading assignment and have been able to follow along with the lessons. My performance has been in account of the effort I put into the class. I have spent a lot of time revising my essays and referring to the course reading in order to make a good essay.
This work took me a total of three days to carry out an extensive research on the positive stride that the United States has made, both politically and economically. It was a four- page work that was aimed at assessing my skills in research and writing skills. I tried as much as possible to apply the skills I had learnt in the WRTG 101 class and I did consult a lot. My
I think I have also become better at revising my own work and reforming the structure of my paper to make it more clear than it was previously. I am particularly proud of my argument
As the semester is finishing up, I look back at this class and reflect my learning and thoughts about this class. I look back and see how much I’ve learned, such as the six plus 1 traits, word choice, and placings of words. These teachings will help me throughout my life, such as scholarship applications, college classes, job applications, and so much more. My thoughts on writing has changed dramatically.
The method of research, citing facts, and brainstorming ideas was very intense in this class. Reading various arguments debating the topic I want to write on, was very challenging and time consuming. In this reflection essay I want to show how researching process was vital on changing my writing style. Also, what I’ve learned in English 105 class after a great summer semester with lots of material to learn from. Researching was drastically important, making every paper I made heavily based on research.
