Frederick Douglass Narrative Essay Born into slavery, abolitionist leader, Frederick Douglass began as a held captive in Talbot County, Maryland, around 1818. February fourteenth was the date Frederick chose to celebrate his birth, the real date and year are still unknown to this day. At a young age, Douglass was chosen to live and work in a plantation, whom the owner may have been his father. Douglass’ mother died when he was at the age of ten. His grandmother, Betty Bailey, then continued to care for him. Leaving his grandmother behind, Douglass was later sent to the home of Hugh Auld in Baltimore. Regardless of the ban on teaching black slaves to read and write, Hugh Auld’s wife, Sophia Auld, taught Douglass the alphabet when we was at the age of twelve. In his final attempt at a new future, Anna Murray, a freed black woman that lived in Baltimore, whom later Douglass fell in love with. Anna Murray had given him a sailors uniform and most of her savings. While wearing his sailors uniform he would carry identification papers from a free black seaman making it to his safe house, in New York City, in less then twenty-four hours. Douglass then sent for Murray after his arrival and they got married on September 15, 1838 and changed their name to Johnson in requires to still hide from Douglass’ identity. After moving to New Bedford, a free black community in New York, they adopted Douglass ass their new last name. Douglass told his story at an abolitionist meeting at his new church in New Bedford, after which he turned into a consistent anti-slavery lecturer.
