Nat Turner has an unbelievable life story that portrays his exponential amount of courage and his willingness to fight for anything that he believed in. With his courage in mind, many other slave rebellions occurred after the massacre led by Nat Turner. Throughout his whole entire life, Nat Turner was looked upon as a leader, and using his influence, he had a huge impact on slavery. “He was said to have described events that occurred before he was born, leading several of his relatives to believe that he was a prophet.” (“Nat Turner”) Nat Turner gained his strong hatred for slavery from his mother, who was born free in Africa. He grew up in Southampton County, Virginia, where slavery was a very common. (“Nat Turner”) Freedom was something Nat and his family sought out for throughout their lives. “His mother had considered murdering him at birth to prevent him from suffering the misery of slavery.” (“Nat Turner”) This goes to show the tremendous toll slavery had on many families; a mother could kill her baby to give them a better life. Nat’s “owner,” Benjamin Turner, gave him the opportunity to learn how to read and write. (“Nat Turner’s Rebellion”) It became apparent from a young age that Nat was a very intelligent child. As he grew older, Nat Turner became more involved in religion, which he often practiced with his fellow slaves. (“Nat Turner’s Rebellion”) Because of his studying of the Bible, Nat Turner was well aware of the gap between the way Christians were supposed to act compared to the way the whites acted in Southampton. Turner often asked himself, “How could these slaveowners call themselves Christians when their conduct was so contrary to the teachings of the Bible?” (“Nat Turner”) When Turner was only twenty-one, he attempted to form a resistance by escaping, and he was successful for about a month. The Fires of Nat Turner In the book The fires of Jubilee, we notice and go through a lot of Nat Turners violent “rebellion” as a former slave in order to get back at what they have gone through. Nat turner takes a complete different approach than what we saw with our letter from Hammond. Nat Turner with the help of a few other former slaves, have created the highest fatalities during his “rebel” from any slave up rise ever recorded. The book was written from a man who has caught his first ever taste of what freedom was like, which is what initially fueled his need for the rebellion.
Nat Turners Rebellion became monumental for many people of color, he was idolized and respected for his courageous actions. The rebellion created fear that spread through the South, even those in favor for abolishment now wanted stricter laws for slaves. Turner was “recorded on the list of dishonor” for the organization he had lead (“An Address To The Slave Of The united Slaves”). There had been an interview by Thomas R. Gray, defending and slightly sympathizing with Turners actions, many rejected the validation of the interview and felt as if he just wanted “to trick, confuse, and overwhelm the slave’s minds.” (“The Southampton Tragedy”).
Nat was often seen as an African child, fasting, praying, or absorbed in reading the Bible. ’s word, his bond and what people thought of him, meant more than his individual freedom. “No greater Love than the act of one that sacrifice that another may endure” In August, 1831, Nat Turner led a group of enslaved and free black men in a rebellion that killed over fifty white men, women, and children (Locke & Wright, 1983). Nat Turner interpreted his rebellion as an act of God. While he awaited trial, Turner spoke with the white attorney, Thomas Ruffin Gray, who wrote their discussions and filed them.
When Nat got to the age of 4, others began to notice his intelligence level was above most. This attribute about himself immediately earned respect from the other slaves. Nat could even read, which was extremely rare at the time among slaves. Benjamin Turner, his master, noticed Nat’s gift of intelligence and always made remarks of how Nat could do much better things with his life other than being a slave. Two life changing events were soon to happen.
Both King and Douglass were advocating for the same thing: their constitutional sanction of freedom. African American slave Frederick Douglass lived through a time of racism and how slavery was a natural thing to do but was a very awful thing. And slavery is when families who had colored skin were separated and sold of to a person that can do anything to them, the slave is pretty much like the slaveholder’s property. In “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass”, Douglass narrates in detail the oppressions he went through as a slave before winning his freedom. In the narrative, Douglass gives a picture about the humiliation, brutality, and pain that slaves go through. We can evidently see that Douglass does not want to describe only his life, but he uses his personal experiences and life story as a tool to rise against slavery. He uses his personal life story to argue against common myths that were used to justify the act of slavery. Douglass invalidated common justification for slavery like religion, economic argument and color with his life story through his experiences torture, separation, and illiteracy, and he urged for the end of slavery.
In my opinion this was nothing compared to the next thing which is the death of Nat’s Master. After all of the talk about Nat’s freedom due to the fact that he was almost useless as a physical working slave, the old man died taking Nat’s freedom with him. The repercussions of Master Benjamins death proceeded to be the exchange of Nat now being property of Master Benjamins eldest son, Samuel Turner. Samuel much like his father was a very religious man. Samuel worked his slaves hard and used faith in the Lord to scare slaves into being obedient like most other Southerner’s.
Slavery is equally a mental and a physical prison. Frederick Douglass realized this follow-ing his time as both a slave and a fugitive slave. Frederick Douglass’s narrative provides a first hand experience into the imbalance of power between a slave and a slaveholder and the negative effects it has on them both. Douglass proves that slavery destroys not only the slave, but the slaveholder as well by saying that this “poison of irresponsible power” has a dehumanizing effect on the slaveholder’s morals and beliefs (Douglass 40). This intense amount of power breaks the kindest heart and changes the slaveholder into a heartless demon (Douglass 40). Yet these are not the only ways that Douglass proves what ill effect slavery has on the slaveholder. Douglass also uses deep characterization, emotional appeal, and religion to present the negative effects of slavery.
Fredrick Douglass was born enslaved,but he escaped to freedom. He became an outspoken opponent of slavery and a civil rights advocate. He lectured widely and even published his own newspapers. In this excerpt, I have learned the most important event that occurred in his life and why its important, the reason why he compared the enslavers to criminals, and the reason why he wished to be an animal. First of all, Fredrick mentioned in the excerpt the most important event in his life and why it matters.
The banned book that I chose to read for this quarter was “The Confessions of Nat Turner” by William Styron. The book is loosely based upon the slave rebellion that Nat Turner led in Southampton County, Virginia from August 21-23, 1831. The book starts with Nat Turner waiting for his trial for the rebellion, and then proceeds to look back on his life and then tell the novels through a series of flashbacks. The flashbacks start with his first slave master, Samuel Turner, and end with him leading the slave rebellion. The book has also come under quite a bit of criticism however.
He became known as an inspirational person. Not many people are willing to go against what others believe, but Douglass was. His slave owner thought that it was “unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to read” (Douglass 29), but that did not stop him from pursuing further knowledge. Education has a powerful effect that makes others fear that one has superiority over them one way or another. Slaves had their basic human rights taken away from them because slave owners wanted them to lack the ability to form an opinion on what was happening to them.
