Every sports team has their own unique and distinctive name that points out certain strengths of their athletic group; however, the team names are often chosen based on inaccurate descriptions of Native Americans and misconceptions of their ethnic culture. This unfortunate group of people is the only racial category that appears on college and professional teams which makes them feel irked. In the place of a Native American, I would agree that certain sports team names are highly offensive and would make a clear point that high school, college, amateur, semi-professional, and professional athletic clubs must discontinue the use of these names, especially the following sports teams: San Diego State University Aztecs, Kansas City Chiefs, and …show more content…
According to “Out of Many”, an AP U.S. History textbook, the actual Aztecs were war people that first started dominating the Valley of Mexico in 1100 and defeated by the Spanish explorer, Hernan Cortes in 1521 (Faragher 43). During football games, fans wear featherheads to cheer the team on. However, the Aztecs were people of a fallen civilization and deserve respect for being great leaders in trade disposition. Even Native Americans of other descendents disapprove the use of featherheads to be used in cheering because it ignores the cultural significance of the headpiece and the featherheads do not come from the …show more content…
No one really has the correct answer. The only answer is that these names are hurting the Native Americans more and more. With this kind of treatment, Native Americans feel as if they are considered as minorities, considered as unfortunate, and considered as insignificant in racial categories. By having their tribe and group names on the athletes’ jerseys, it brings anger rather than pride to be a Native American. Whether considered as a major ethnic group or not, Native Americans must be given the respect by having all offensive names on sports team repealed and a legal assurance that there will be no further misconceptions and racial prejudice in sports history ever again in United States
Is using Native Americans as mascots for sports teams offensive? It does not matter if it is a high school or a college, sometimes even the NFL. Examples of sports teams that use Native Americans images are Washington Redskins, Florida State Seminoles, and a high school Cherokee Braves. It is not offending and there should not be any problem because it is not making fun of anybody. Using Native American images and names in professional, collegiate, and high schools sport teams does not reinforce and perpetuate stereotypes because it symbolizes their culture, shows that they are ready to play, and appreciates their coexistence.
Not supporting a disrespectful team, is what the Cleveland Indians organization needs to see from people from all over. Maybe if people inside of the management of the team would just remove this offensive logo, no problems would be seen. We could all enter back into the stadiums, and finally continue to support the Cleveland Indians. With a small group of people who protest against the Chief Wahoo logo, it is crazy that the Indians haven’t removed the logo from the uniforms. Although a large majority of people sees no problem with the logo, it truly makes no sense why the logo is still present on the uniforms of the Cleveland
When they flirts arrived at Tenochtitlan, the Aztecs thought the conquistadors were gods. The conquistadors obviously took advantage of this opportunity. This is when the Aztecs didn't attack. They thought Hernando Cortes was a legend fulfilled. They couldn't attack a
A century after Columbus made the Americas known to Europe, the Spaniards sent out additional ships to explore and bring back wealth and knowledge. However, Hérnan Cortés, the leader of this expedition, did not follow his mission. He first conquered a city on the coast and moved inward to continue overtaking the Aztec empire (Lecture?). The moment Cortés and his men touched the land, European diseases such as smallpox and yellow fever began decimating the Aztecs, who had never built up immunities. In addition to this, there had already been drought, causing a shortage of food and water throughout the empire.
There are a lot of offensive mascots used for sports, and some people seem to think that they lack respect for their culture. The offensive
The strategies that were used by the Spanish to convert the Aztec populace are varied. Yet the two most commonly agreed on strategies by historians include adaption, where the Aztecs peacefully converted and blended their old customs with Christianity. Secondly, is that of forceful conversion which lead to Aztec slavery. These two strategies were unsuccessful simply because of a lack of willingness to convert peacefully or forcibly by the Aztecs. In fact Queen Isabella I of Castile gave the edict to Governor Ovando (Governor of the Indies) to place the conquered Aztec populace into neighboring dwellings with the Spanish.
The strong tactics of the Spanish Conquistadors, the mistakes of Montezuma, and disease lead to the defeat of the Aztec army of 200,000 men. The Spanish Conquistadors had the advantage over the Aztecs, using the allies they had and the technology they used in battle. Montezuma, the ruler of Tenochtitlan made a mistake when the Spanish Conquistadors arrived, by thinking they were Gods.. The conquistadors also brought over diseases, which whipped out most of the Aztec army leading to a slight setback for the Aztecs. The Aztecs then, had no chance against the Spanish.
“Schools use these as ways to honor them for being brave and to look at them as a leader,” (“Native American mascot controversy”). This is a good idea, but students don’t think any students think this is the reason for the name. If the school really had this idea in mind they would do more to dignify it. But from what I’ve experienced it is that schools don’t really honor other teams' mascots. They have posters and chants going against the opponents mascot in a disrespectful way.
Nikolai Sprouse Ms. James English 10 Honors 11 April 2023 Native American Names as Mascots: A Racist Dilemma The use of Native American names as sports mascots has been an extreme topic for many years when it comes to racism in sports. Many sports teams, primarily in North America, adopted the names, symbols, and characters as a part of the brand's identity. Although, the practice has been chastised by many Native American advocacy groups and tribes, especially arguing that it refers to rude and harmful stereotypes which reduce a diverse culture into nothing more than a drawing.
Recently, the use of controversial words has become a heavily debated topic and has gained international attention as seemingly truthful statements to some, cause insult to others. The Times article "Why 'Redskins' Is a Bad Word", by acclaimed linguist and professor John McWhortor, was published around the time the use of the word Redskin was being debated. In the article, McWhortor aims to clarify the condemnation of the word Redskin, by suggesting that the offence does not stem from the literal definition of such words, but instead the negative and often derogatory connotations the words have. McWhorter begins by introducing the recent discussions surrounding the use of the word Redskins, especially the actions taken by Californian schools
On September 26th 2014, Derek Jeter took his final swing at the most prestigious Yankees Stadium in front of thousands and millions of baseball fans and ended up winning his final home game. The crowd went ballistic over the RBI and chanted “Derek Jeter” while raising signs that read “Salute to the Captain”. At that very moment, people viewed Derek Jeter not for what race he fell under or for what kind of person he was or for the ladies he slept with, but the athlete who electrified the diamond every time he stepped on it. Roberta Newman wrote an article on (Branding Derek Jeter, Redefining Race) companies such as Movado and Avon on how they showcase Derek Jeter “as neither black nor white and so can relate to everyone” (Newman) as a turning
Over the past few years, the controversy over sports names or mascots has increasingly become an uproar. The main sports teams being targeted due to controversial mascots are programs having names that deal with Native Americans. Well known programs, such as, the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and the Washington Redskins are just a few of the many teams being targeted due to controversial team names and/or mascots. Currently, the Redskins are receiving the most heat from racial groups. However, professional sport teams are not the only teams receiving negative remarks; there are well known colleges that are also receiving huge blows for racial symbols.
There are many sports team names and mascots whose names reference Native Americans; this has become a public controversy due to the sports team names being interpreted as a racially offensive pursue. Most people do not take into consideration that these teams have an important meaning behind them, and how they contribute to the insightful history of Native Americans themselves. It would be a catastrophe having to lose all the history. Many claims toward this idea of "racism" are due to NFL and college team names such as the Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Florida State Seminoles are just a few.
