Myths are a medium by which people explain the world around them to younger generations. These myths generally explain how the world was formed and came to be. However, the teachings of each myth can be varied based on where they originated. If the myth came from a polytheistic culture, the myth may be more focus on the nature and ecological lessons. Likewise, if the myth came from a culture based on a monotheistic religion, the moral teaching may be focused more on humans, and moral development and choices. One of the myths studied is a very popular one, that is even commonly referenced in somewhat daily life; the story of Adam and Eve in “The Book of Genesis”. This story is widely known, and features in the beginning of The Bible. Another myth that deals with nature is the Iliad, written by Homer. This is another well-known text that talks about the interactions between nature and man, and how one affects the other in different kinds of ways. Both of these myths raise the question ‘Do these myths teach more about mankind, or ourselves? Or, do they teach us more about nature, and the essences of nature as a whole collective unit?” It is evident in these cases provided that myths tend to teach people more about mankind than they teach about nature. What exactly are myths? What are their purposes? According to dictionary.com, myths are defined as traditional or legendary stories that include some type of being or hero or event, concerning the early history of people or explaining some social or natural phenomenon. This definition sounds pretty complicated, however all it’s saying is that myths are fake stories but they usually have some big lesson behind them to teach those who are listening or reading them. Myths are usually used in stories to teach the readers some sort of lesson.

Popular culture uses myths to deceive people, to convince them to believe in something or someone that is not true. It is considered as an expression of childhood experiences, and it also explains the origin and meaning of the world. According to Long (1994), “The term mythology may describe a certain body of myths, for example, Greek, African, or Scandinavian, or it may refer to the study of myths” (p.694). These collections of narratives are superior when it comes to influencing different areas of knowledge. There are numerous types of mythology, but Ancient Greece is the one that has given an immense influence on modern society.
The most important way to think about myths is that they are symbolic stories that attempt to answer difficult human questions about the universe. For instance, where did we and the world come from? And what is the meaning of life?. “We all want to know where we came from, but because our earliest beginnings are lost in the mists of prehistory, we have created myths about our forefathers that are not historical but help to explain current attitudes about our environment, neighbors and customs” (6). Myth functions as a guidance that explains everything that we come into contact with in the universe.
In the epic poem, the Iliad written by Homer, several characters taking part in the warfare between the Achaeans and the Trojans are portrayed as embodying the heroic code of courage, physical strength, leadership, arete of value of honour, and the acceptance of fate. The heroic code is illustrated by the actions of the Trojan prince, Hector and the Achaeans strongest warrior, Achilles. Both of these characters display the Greek’s image of a hero, and can also let the reader discern what the society admires, looks up to and aspires to in its heroes. There are also characters who fail to be heroic, such as the Trojan “vivid and beautiful” prince, Paris. These characters in the Iliad illustrate the qualities that Ancient Greek society values.

Homer’s Iliad is one of the earliest depictions of war ever written.
