SIGNIFICANCE OF THE CONCEPT
It is important to distinguish an effective manager and a good leader, also to recognise the concept of being a good leader as well as an effective manager, managers aspiring to become a leader can benefit from acquiring leadership skills, a good leader possess several qualities that could easily be termed as good managerial skills. Hence a leader must be well developed physically, mentally and intellectually to be able to assume such positions.

Nursing is gaining influence in all aspect of healthcare practice, therefore it is important for nurses to develop good leadership skills at the early stage of their practice which is the key to all nursing career and nurse managers can become good leaders with effective training and enhancement of their skills in leadership. Most nursing managers are tossed around by their leaders when they themselves are leaders in their capacities.
A nursing manager aspiring to become a leader must be committed to excellence and passion for patient’s advocacy, employee’s protection and be a role model, living by example. He or she needs to learn to take control of issues and handle them as a good leader should instead to reporting all issues to the leader in charge. He or she assist the employees and protect them from being molested by both internal and external forces. They help to prevent unnecessary retrenchment of staff but rather redistribute them to other departments where their services are more useful. The nurse manager helps to motivate the workers by rewarding them financially and non-financially. He also inspire the nurses to provide a better patients care and become more productive and satisfied in their
Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).
Professional Association Membership Professional nursing organizations, such as the American Nurses Association (ANA), are dedicated to supporting the field of nursing and advocating for nurses all across America. The ANA is committed to recognizing and advocating on important issues that impact nurses. Some of the issues that the ANA advocates for include safe work environments, better pay, better benefits, and better nurse-patient ratios. The ANA represents approximately 4 million nurses as they work to empower them, support them, and protect them. Furthermore, membership in the ANA is not limited strictly to individuals.
Hi Katherine, I agree that leadership and management program are a great part of a nursing school since we need to continue to be a role model for new nurses entering the career not only to teach them nursing skills need in the profession, but also to encourage them to further their education like we are doing it.
Nurse Practitioner are registered Nurses who serve as primary and specialty health care providers under a physician. Much like a geriatrician, Gerontological Nurse Practitioners work with elderly patients, diagnosing illness, conducting exams, and prescribing medication. (“Geriatric Nurse…”). These type of nurses work at nursing homes, with home healthcare services and in hospice facilities, or run your own private practice. A geriatric nurse work with finding illnesses and diseases, prescribing medication and therapy, routine check-ups and screenings, etc…etc.
Introduction A decade into the 21st century effective leadership is becoming increasingly apparent (McLean2007). Effective leadership in this context is no more important than in contemporary nursing. The writer works in a leading academic hospital, holding a senior nurse position for the last 2 years. In a competitive world of leaders in the health sector many of them are highly skilled, experienced and have dynamic qualities to lead the health services. Moreover, leaders and managers take extended roles, due to increase in demands.
In addition, an individualized leadership development plan, including a goal will be discussed. Literature Review To achieve transformational leadership one must achieve these key 5 practices (Ajanaku & Lubbe, 2021). The first competent transformational leadership, modelling the way, can be achieved through setting the example for those around you. In order for this to be effective, the nurse should develop trust and respect, with those around them. Building trust as a leader can influence those around you to have confidence in one's abilities to lead and be more inclined to follow.
My leadership in nursing is grounded in the knowledge of the needs of patients; knowledge of skills, individual characteristics and needs of the staff employees; and objectives implemented by the group. The strongest feature of is the stimulation of motivation for each employee to develop their potential, and to take care of a particular patient where the employee recognises that he was considered the best qualified who provided with a service that meets his needs . My leadership in nursing allows me to implement the actions with a view to achieving higher levels of efficiency in care in health and nursing, while in the professional practice law and the code of ethics I find support for the development of process of nursing leadership. According to the theory, the restrictions and requirements the hospitals hinder intimidate the professional nursing as to argue in front of such situation.
Transitioning from a student nurse to a real life put your big girl pants on, professional nurse is terrifying to say the least. We, as students, go from having our hands held while we bathe a patient, to being told that every single medication pass and procedure on all 5+ of our patients is completely on our own. No thank you, school forever please! Being an independent professional nurse takes a very important characteristic to achieve, and a sense of confidence and leadership within one self. Being a nurse leader isn’t for every Registered Nurse out there.
All the qualities mentioned above are the qualities that make a good and an effective nursing leader. However, from these examples we can see that having leadership qualities does not always refer to those who are managers. However, people though that the concept of management and leadership are the same, they cannot distinguished what is leader and a manager is; they view the aforementioned roles as the same and no difference at all. It has nothing to do with having charisma or other exotic personality traits which is one of the requirement and characteristic of a leader and a manager.. It is not a province of a chosen few. Nor is leadership necessarily better than management or a replacement. Rather Leadership and management are two distinctive and complementary systems of actions (Kotter, 1995).
Leadership is crucial for the survival and sustainability of all kinds of institutions. Regardless of the shape or size of an institution, it needs and effective leader to prosper and grow. Leaders, through the actions and decisions they take, affect the direction and speed of their institutions in a positive or negative way that is why certain qualities of leadership must be acquired by leaders to be effective in leading any institution. Qualities such as trust, vision, courage, care, empathy are crucial for effective leadership. It is important to differentiate between leadership and management.

However, Clark (2009) states that an effective nurse leader utilizes appropriate leadership theories to guide their actions as well as they are required to apply their knowledge and problem solving skills to develop creative solutions to managerial issues on the ward. On the other hand management is concerned with its five core principles; according to Kannan (2004b) these principles were revised and are now thought as planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling (as cited in Clark, 2009). Furthermore, Clark pointed out that leadership and management often overlap. Therefore,
