Obesity is one of the leading causes to major health issues like diabetes. Diabetes is a chronic condition that comes in two different types. Type one diabetes is hereditary and type two diabetes is caused by obesity. Type one diabetes is when your pancreas does not produce insulin. Type two diabetes is when your pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin or your body can’t take in or absorb the insulin. Obesity is caused by high fat foods, high salt leveled foods as well as high cholesterol. Many kids are targeted with high fattening foods through television ads and through social network and media. A blogger from public health named states,” On one hand, larger portions, processed packaged food, and drive-thru meals are branded as almost classically …show more content…
According to Dr. Pollock and Dr. Favret,” Researchers have not yet discovered a specific gene that causes obesity, although several genes are considered to be important in playing a part” (Favret, Pollock 1). In the opinions of the doctors, they believe a certain gene causes obesity. If you, as a person, who may have an understanding logic about if you’re obese that you’re most likely at a predisposition for having diabetes. Most people don’t believe that obesity is caused by a gene, but it’s a self-control issue. Here’s the thing with that, us humans don’t always have that”skinny” metabolism or that “perfect 7.0” figure because some of our bodies don't want us to be normal. Many people think that if you work out and drink protein shakes you become that next top model or the next Brad Pitt, but, in reality, that isn't even close to what the truth is. You maybe can do all of that and still be a heavier set person, your body's cells and how it reacts doesn't always mean you’ll be fat or skinny, it just means your genetic makeup is different then the person sitting next to you. All in all, being obese isn't is self choice, it's apart of your genetic makeup, you can do everything in the book and still be heavier set. Choosing fast, greasy unhealthy food over healthy, nutritional food, is a self-control action or a decision that is made by you. Only you can control what you eat and what you do to …show more content…
Many people don’t realize how hard it is too try to lose weight and not be obese nor have health issues. We don’t all have the same kind of body that Brad Pitt has or the body from the models at victoria secret. We are who we are because of our genetic makeup and that in itself doesn't make us any different than yourself. We can choose to be fat or skinny but we can choose whether we manage that and try to lose weight or we can just live with it and become numb to other side effects. Diabetes isn’t a self-control issue or a choice. You can chose to take care of yourself and not eat fatty foods or allow yourself to indulge in such “poisonous” foods that can hurt you or affect your health. All in all, us as Americans, aren’t the healthiest. We should take the first step in ending this epidemic of obesity. We should encourage little kids to choose a carrot instead of a French fry or an apple instead of a fatty burger from McDonald's. We should stop targeting kids as a fast food product and start targeting them towards something healthy. “If you have type 1 diabetes, the chance that your child will get diabetes is about 1 in 20” (Favret, Pollock 3). Many people that don’t have diabetes don’t understand the side effects of their kid getting it. Everybody will have diabetes by the end of their lifetime how you
It does not matter the age of the person, obesity can put anyone at risk of much more deathly diseases. The population of people having type 2 diabetes has doubled between 1996 and 2007. About twenty years ago, it was said that only people under the age of 40 could only get this disease, but in the past 10 years it has increased tremendously in adolescents. While the frequency of type 2 diabetes has increased, it has also escalated very largely for many people of color. About 13.2% of African Americans, 15.9% of Native Americans and 12.8% of Hispanics have type 2 diabetes.
There are more ways to shun obesity. Michael Pollan, who wrote “Escape from the western diet”, claims that the fast food industry are one of the main reasons why the people struggle with their health. He believes that the processed food we consume gives us harmful deceases. Pollan urges us to listen to his words to avoid the “Western diet”, he preaches that this is main cause of obesity, yet he does not give concrete information. I disagree with Pollan’s view that the food industry is the main cause of our health problems because although Pollan gives us great arguments he does not dive in into greater detail.
In “Obesity within the United Sates” Richard Dirksen defines obesity as “weighing roughly 30 or more pounds over a healthy weight” (Dirksen 1). The psychical appearance of obesity is something that in most cases is easy to tell. But the side effects of obesity are what remain silent for long periods of time. In most cases people who are obese tend to shy away from others because they feel simply as, if they do not fit in. Yet they continue to live a gluten full life style regardless of what others think as it satisfies their hunger and taste buds which is starting to make obesity a more common trend.
Behavior and environment has a big role to play in obesity too. Studies show that less than 50% of adults in America get a healthy amount physical activity. This means that grownups cannot get enough calories out and end up gaining weight because they choose not to live healthy or they have a disease. Also modern technology influences obesity because it makes labor easier. Computers and televisions keep Americans on the couch all day.
Every child in America can rattle off ten or fifteen different sugary snacks that they like with no problem, but not nearly as many can name the same number of fruits or vegetables that they enjoy. Junk food marketed towards children is a real threat to their overall health as they are too young to recognize that it isn’t healthy or good for them, they only see a brightly colored package and something that they think tastes good. Children in America are more obese than ever before due to the accessibility of junk foods, by letting children eat these foods adults are doing them a great disservice. Junk foods contain unhealthy or even cancer-causing chemicals that get added into the body, it can destroy mental health, and is the leading cause of obesity in America. Most junk foods like snack cakes, cookies, chips, and anything canned or frozen contain preservatives.
Obesity is a medical condition that affects much of the global population. This medical condition can bring about other medical problems and issues if not treated properly. Obesity is a complex condition with many risk factors that can cause a person to develop the condition. These risk factors are environment, genetics, sleep, etc. Obesity can bring about serious health issues such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancers, and mental health problems.
Research has it that nearly two-thirds of Americans are overweight or rather obese. As campaign to sensitize the masses against habits that might otherwise lead to rise in victims affected by obese conditions is being aired by medics, the media and the rational public, it is evident that there is elevated prevalence of obesity in the United States which has since doubled the initial number of the previous decades. It is a matter of urgency and it calls for stringent measures to curb this condition. Before totally embarking on the topic of what causes obesity and ways of dealing with it, it is pertinent to understand the meaning of being overweight. Medics have the capacity of classifying people based on their weights and different classifications
What are the risk factors of diabetes? Type 1 – The main risk factor is family history. When a person has family members with diabetes their chances of getting the disease is higher. Type 2 – A big risk factor for this type is being overweight.
Obesity is a key dilemma that we face in the United States. A person whose weight is higher than what is considered as a normal weight adjusted for height is described as overweight or having obesity. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIH), about 1 in 13 adults are considered to have extreme obesity. Society has a mind-set that a person who is obese is strictly due to having no control over what they eat. This is not the case.
Although this is true in some cases, it is not completely accurate. The number of Americans who are obese due to Type II Diabetes does not even compare to the number of Americans who are obese just simply because they choose not to eat healthy. In a handful of cases, genetics do play a significant role in a person’s weight. Victims of that disease however, take extra precautionary measures to ensure they maintain their health. Overweight adults should be just as cautious when planning their meals.
And yes, I do have diabetes. I am a Type 1 Diabetic. “Well, can’t you just work out or eat healthier and you won’t have to deal with it anymore?”,
Because these CFBs are usually higher in fat and less healthy than food sold as lunches, regulation appears to be a logical way to build healthy habits in young Americans (Datar and Nicosia). As counterintuitive as it may be, prohibiting children from purchasing junk food, in fact, harms
A study conducted by the University College London in the United Kingdom proposed that body weight is strongly influenced by genes. In the study, researchers used a new method called Genome Wide Complex Trait Analysis, to investigate the molecular genetic heritability of body weight in children (Llewelyn, 2013). The data collected was from a population of 2,269 children aged between 8 and 11 years old. They were looking to discover whether children who happen to be more genetically similar might also be more similar in body weight. Using the GCTA method, the researchers found that additive effects of multiple genes across the whole genome accounted for 30% of individual difference in childhood body weight (Llewelyn, 2013).
It is an inconsiderate action, to remain ignorant to the epidemic of obesity that has plagued or country. America is turning into a soft, uncompetitive, unmotivated land that is a direct result of our over indulgence and security in food. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, over 78 million Americans are obese. This extra weight we are forcing ourselves to carry holds several emotional problems and costs that are detrimental to our country. It has become a staple of our society, food is accessible, inexpensive, and comforting.
