Hailey Ohl Mr. Snyder American Cultures I period 3 11 December 2017 The Olive Branch Petition could not stop The Revolutionary War If Britain had accepted the Second Continental Congress’s Olive Branch petition the Revolutionary war could not have been avoided. The Olive branch petition is a peace petition sent to king George III by colonial delegates after the battles of Lexington and Concord. There were several reasons based on events that had happened before 1775 that can date back to many things the British have done that would have not stopped the war it was just a matter of time.
Later on in the book the author will also state how the British decided to take a slower approach to warfare. Both sides of the war had many accidents and mixups. For example, George Washington was low on supplies, so Henery Knox would go recover supplies for them. When Knox when for his supply run he came across some big cannons. Because of that the united stated won the
How many people do you think thought this war would be a big event. This is a special day that many died and we make know of it the American Revolution. There have been many occasions like this one but with the help from Paul Revere, Boston, and the stamp act. Paul was an ordinary man and became involved in many special events.
First, public opinion had a huge impact on the Declaration of Independence because of protests created by colonists, impactive writing like Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, and acts given to colonists like the Intolerable Acts and the Tea Act. The Olive Branch Petition affected the Declaration because the entire reason for it being created was for the purpose of claiming the rights of Americans but also staying loyal to the British Crown. Parliament didn’t read it, which angered the colonists. This began new protests by the colonists who thought that they deserve rights. Also, Thomas Paine’s writing affected the Declaration because one writing, Common Sense, discussed how the colonists needed independence, which changed minds of many people
(Document 5). After ten years of disagreement over Parliamentary representation, the British were still unwilling to grant the colonists this right. Before the Second Continental Congress decided to go to war, there was still hope of reaching a peaceful settlement. The Congress sent King George the Olive Branch Petition in the hopes of restoring peace. His lack of response is noted in “The Declaration of Independence”, which was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, American Independence Day.
The Olive Branch Petition was sent from the colonists to Great Britain in hopes of achieving peace and relieving the tensions between them put in place prior to the Battle of Lexington and Concord in 1774. Great Britain responded to the petition with a letter referring to the colonists as traitors to their mother country. This response effectively initiated the Revolutionary War for the colonists. Many varying political views stemmed from whether the colonists should embark on a revolution that would move them out of the guidance of Great Britain and that would provide them independence from Great Britain. Some argued that the revolution would be a “conservative” revolution where every thing will remain largely the same, in terms of political
During the American Revolution George Washington turned out to be a very successful leader. He led his army against the British. The revolutionary war began with the “shot heard around the world” at Lexington in 1744. Washington crossed the Delaware are lead the Americans to victory in Trenton then again in Princeton.
For starters, the American Revolution was waged as a war of last resort because the colonists could not execute any more plans to make truce with Britain peacefully. The principle of last resort states that a war can only be waged after all the peaceful options are considered and force must be conducted as the last alternative. In the “Olive Branch Petition”, John Dickinson, a representative of the colonists wrote: “We therefore beseech your Majesty, that your royal authority and influence may be graciously interposed to procure us relief from our afflicting fears and jealousies, occasioned by the system before-mentioned, and to settle peace through every part of our Dominions, with all humility submitting to your Majesty’s wise consideration, whether it may not be expedient, for facilitating those important purposes, that your Majesty be pleased to direct some mode, by which the united applications of your faithful Colonists to the Throne, in pursuance of their common counsels, may be improved into a happy and permanent reconciliation; and that, in the mean time, measures may be taken for preventing the further destruction of the lives of your Majesty’s subjects; and that such statutes as more immediately distress any of your Majesty’s Colonies may be repealed.” (Dickinson, John). As inscribed in the “Olive Branch Petition” the colonists’ will was not to detach from Great Britain but to maintain union and peace.
In two of the three key battles mentioned George Washington was the commander and led the U.S. to victory, after the war George Washington resigned his commission. The peace treaty signed in Paris ended the conflict of the war and the British left the U.S. in defeat taking all that supported Great
This was a more peaceful way of rebelling hence the name “Olive Branch Petition.” “An olive branch has stood for peace since ancient times” (Boehm, Hoone, McGowan, McKinney-Browning & Miramontes 231) and Dickenson kept peace as much as possible when presenting the idea to “repeal the Intolerable Acts… [b]ut…the King refused to repeal the laws” (ibid). In response to this, “the Second Continental Congress decided to form a colonial army” (ibid) in preparation to fight the British to earn freedom. Even though this was an attempt to make peace with England, it became another reason to fight for
On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee had announced a motion to Congress to proclaim independence. John Adams and Benjamin Franklin reviewed Jefferson’s draft of the declaration; and they had conserved its imaginative form, but struck passages that were more than likely to meet disagreement or skepticism, particularly the passages that blamed King George III for the intercontinental slave trade and all of those who blamed the British people rather than their own government. The British Government tried its best to terminate the Declaration of Independence as an insignificant document by the unhappy colonists. The British officers hired publicists to highlight the Declaration’s faults. The most significant diplomatic result that came out of the event was to agree on respect for the United States by friendly foreign
Dear Friends George Washington was leader in charge of the Continental Army throughout the American Revolutionary conflict. Washington had experienced the direct effects of increasing taxes compulsory on American immigrants by the British, as well as came to consider that it was in the superlative interests of the immigrants to declare self-government from England. The Treaty of Paris was a formal agreement between America and Great Britain, signed on September 3, 1783. The signed agreement recognized American independence, established borders for the new nation, and formally ended the Revolutionary War. Articles of the treaty were being formed as early as 1782, and the Treaty of Paris was finally ratified by the Continental Congress in 1784. The treaty contained ten articles, or key points, and the preface declares the intention of both America and Great Britain to forget all past differences and misunderstandings.
