From a very young age I was involved in activities and sports. While I have played everything from softball to kickball, soccer has always been my absolute favorite. I can recall numerous early Saturday morning tournaments and dew covered grass. My mother would bring icy cold juicy oranges for breaks and halftime. Nothing can compare to that tangy fruit when you are an exhausted teenager. Amazingly enough it had the ability to refresh and renew the team to keep fighting for the win. To this day after a workout or simply mowing the lawn I find myself craving a fragrant juicy orange that no other fruit has the ability to quench. As I recall these fond childhood memories I start to wonder where oranges originated from and the process which takes …show more content…
William Wolfskill has been considered the grandfather of American citrus farming. California is where many of the commercial orange groves are currently located. Wolfskill grew hundreds of lemon and orange seedlings. Lee explains how the orange business triggered a type of “gold rush” in California and proved to be an extremely lucrative business. Lee states, “Because of the 1849 gold mining boom, oranges gained tremendous popularity because of the high vitamin-C to fight scurvy”. Oranges still have a huge impact on keeping California’s economy afloat.” So called because the end of the fruit resembles a belly button, the navel orange was far superior to other varieties at the time because it was seedless, sweet and ripened in winter under California's Mediterranean climate”(Lee,Ching). Interestingly enough Lee also points out, “Nearly all of the navel orange trees grown in the United States are descendants of Tibbett’s’ original trees, now 137 years old, still stands and bears fruit in Riverside, California, and has been designated as a California historical landmark”( Lee, Ching). The navel orange furthermore altered how growers produce citrus and other fruit trees. Before the navel orange, citrus was grown mostly from seed, which meant the trees retained their biological variety, bearing an assortment of fruit that …show more content…
HLB actually was discovered in Florida in 2005 according to research done by Journal of phytopathology.”the disease infects all commercial citrus cultivars and causes substantial economic losses by promoting fruit drop, rendering fruit inedible and shorting the lifespan of infected trees” (Miyakawa, da Graca, and Bove´). This is just one of many citrus diseases that is steadily rising it has forced none-organic farmers to use controversial pesticides to treat the problem. Pesticide use has been extremely questionable in the last few years. A recent scientific journal points out that, “Fresh fruit can be a source of toxic substances-pesticides, which may penetrate plant tissues and remain in cells. Children are in fact at risk for pesticide exposure because their diets generally contain many fruits [including oranges]” (Food Additives & Contaminants). Children can be heavily affected by these toxic substances. According to the Hamilton Spectator,” The review of 142 studies found that prenatal exposure to pesticides can cause neurodevelopmental, respiratory and reproductive problems in newborns and children, including attention deficits, asthma and lower birth weight”. As a child I had frequent respiratory issues, some of which I am still dealing with today. Through my research I have formed the opinion that pesticides are doing more harm
Sports is everything to me, it gets me through life, teaches me lessons, and makes me who I am. My first sport that I ever played was baseball. Whenever me and my family went to the park it was to do drills and play baseball. Being the youngest and believe it or not the shortest it seemed that's all we did.

The history of migrant farm workers in California has changed extensively over time, especially under the influence of outside factors such as war and the desire to emigrate. Migrant workers, not just farm workers, have been involved in various occupations, from fishing to forestry, yet the agricultural field remains the most common (“Migrant Farm Labor”). Agricultural activities were once performed by Native Americans before Europeans established a colonial presence. During the existence of slavery in the U.S., it is believed by environmental historians that slaves applied their techniques in agriculture to those of American techniques, allowing them to rise against their owners with a better understanding of the landscape of the plantations

I can still recite lines from memory and grandma tells me about those days often. I played soccer when I was young as well for a few years. Soccer was a lot of fun and I recall enjoying it. My mom tells me that I complained every time she tried to take me to practice because I had other things I wanted to do more, but games were always fun. Games were a really enjoyable part of my young
Growing up in the Redlands, an agricultural community in the rural outskirts of Miami, has definitely been a valuable experience that has taught me to appreciate nature and enjoy the outdoors. Whether its picking fruits and vegetables in the fields or visiting the Fruit and Spice Park, which includes a variety of fruit, nut, and spice trees, the Redlands is a preservation area and home to many tropical fruit species. In this paper, I would like to explore some of the fruit trees that are found in the Redlands and the role that they play in the environment. It is important to know the life cycles of fruit trees in order to understand how to grow and care for each one of them. Vascular plants, which are primarily distinguished as having vascular
Those two sports were running and soccer. As years went on I grew out gymnastics, softball, and etc. Nevertheless, running and soccer was something I did not grow out of. I absolutely adored each of them and thought I would continue doing both of them for the rest of my life. But that was not the case.

At this time, there is little to no evidence that these pesticides are increasing yields from plants they are applied to. However, there has been evidence of the pesticides killing bees or causing damage to their nervous systems, which impedes their ability to forage and fly. Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health preformed a study which found that 70% of pollen and honey collected from local bees contained at least trace amounts of neonicotinoids. Levels found from these samples were enough to cause detrimental health effects. In a separate study, they found that over half of plants at a major garden store contained neonicotinoids.
