To what extent does food as a motif represent structure and bonds among characters in the novel? As Hang travels to Moscow by train she recounts her life experiences and contemplates on her past during the corrupt communist reign. Food is used symbolically all throughout the book, with the same purpose which is to describe characters and setting. In the last quote, Marie was described alongside her father, to have been tired through the symbolic use of food, even though the quote didn’t directly state it. Another example of food being used as a symbol is seen when Werner finds Marie in the attic. In this scene Marie and Werner were opening a can of peaches with a hurry that demonstrates the extent of their hunger. Although their intention is to actually eat the food, which contradicts the main point, it’s what they do at the end which demonstrates how food is used symbolically.

Through this food diary assignment, I have learned that I have a somewhat healthy diet, but it would be good for me to add some more nutritious foods to my diet. Through this analysis, I will discuss the ranges and limits of specific nutrients, and what my average levels were for the two days that I recorded for this assignment. According to my nutrient intake reports, my intake of calories, fiber, and cholesterol were all under or at the target value. The target value of calories is 2000 while my average value was only 1271 calories.
When Chin-Kee and Danny are eating lunch in the cafeteria many of their peers are disgusted by Chin-Kee’s lunch. Chin-Kee is depicted to be eating cat gizzards. “Would cousin Da-Nee rike to tly Chin-Kee’s clispy field cat gizzards wiff noodle?”(114). Chin-Kee eating fried cat gizzards mirrors the stereotype of Asian people having strange, disgusting, and outlandish food just because they sometimes eat a different type of food than people in other places do. By choosing to have him eat cat gizzards Gene Luen Yang exaggerated the stereotype so people could see how ridiculous and unrealistic it seems in real life.

Before starting that large process I firstly will explain what the social imagination is and what the key points of the imagination are in able to fully understand the topic; food and its history, biography, and the relation it has in society. Her life unfolds in stages- childhood, young adulthood, and her eventual role as an exported worker in Russia. With each of these shifts in her life comes a shift in setting and a shift in her emotional state. Hang’s changing emotional state depicts her “coming of age” and her growth as a character. Setting is important to creation of shift in the novel, and is often described in detail.

Food itself has meaning attached to it, from the way it is prepared down to the ingredients used.
