Bottles At school they tell you ‘Don’t do drugs’, but at home I got a different message. A message that came to me, day after day, in the form of smelly beer bottles that cluttered my house. My parents, drunk and disorderly, fell asleep each night either too early or too late and would blame me for their headache. The painkillers they used came in the form of overpriced bottles of beer that ate away at our money like cockroaches. The house was a mess, and I never knew what to do; my homework, or clean. For each one I picked, I got in-trouble for not doing the one I chose it over. “I must be doing something wrong”, is the story of my life. “Life” is not my favorite story, nor is it the best. If I could rewrite the plot of my own life I would make the setting one with flowers in my yard, not weeds. I would have pitchers of sweet and sour pink lemonade in my fridge, not strategically placed bottles of beer. I would rewrite the “characters” into those who think about their actions and how they affect the people around them. What a boring story it would be, I know, but a peaceful change from the disaster it is now. Though, life isn’t just a story that I can write to my liking. I make life my own by writing in the margins and filling the empty space with what makes me happy. Friends who kept me …show more content…
They were watered by the alcohol I poured down the drain to keep my parents sober. Sixth to seventh grade became the period of my life where I thought nothing would get better. My teachers would tell me “The sky’s the limit!”, but I didn’t understand. I couldn’t even get off the ground. The red ink marks my homework bled were mirrored on my body as battle scars as the result of my poor grades and lack of interest in what the school was teaching me. Every day in class made me feel even more surrounded in darkness and I thought, “The light will never find me; it’s way too dark in
It’s the end of the game, my team is down one, there are eight seconds and counting on the clock and the ball is in my hands. I search the stands to find the one person who has been there for me my entire life. Only he’s not there. It’s easy to get caught up in the game; not the game of basketball, but the dope game. It is a life few choose, but many find themselves in due to the harsh reality of job loss and depression.
“ you always have somebody supporting you” explains Chandler Pearce. Alex Pearce says that through thick or thin you always have somebody there. Chandler Pearce goes on to say that “going through schools I might have lost some friends, but I always knew that I would have a friend with me.
When humans are surrounded in an endless chasm of darkness, they find it necessary to grasp onto whatever dim hope may be near them. They find it necessary to set their minds onto a mission or action, however feasible or relevant, and turn all thoughts away from death or despair. Light and dark are words commonly thrown about, usually to describe gradients of color. But humans need light in the sense of comfort, a way out, or the promise of salvation. They have to find this light in life, to turn away from the darkness.
In numerous instances, today’s world values addictions over family. Every day, the news highlights stories where addiction overpowers. For instance, a few weeks ago, Columbus, had a couple who overdosed on heroin with their grandchild in the backseat. Hence why “Under The Influence” by Scott Russell Sanders is extremely relevant. Sanders asserted his experience with his dad, who was an alcoholic.
In this week’s reading, Chapter 24 discussed the trouble that many young, Indian athletes face when it comes to both their athletics and academics. Living on a reservation can make it difficult for these athletes to develop the mentality and attitude that could drive them toward a successful career. I agree with the author’s claim that there exists a seemingly unbreakable cycle for these athletes and I will outline the premises for such an argument in the following paragraphs. In addition to this, I will include my arguments in support of these premises below. Kevin Simpson’s first premise it that if these athletes who are growing up on these reservations look to the actions of their parents and elders, then they will most likely follow in their parent’s footsteps.
Friends are the family one chooses for himself. In many cases, close friends are involved or interested in the same types of activities. Though often heralded as the maker of friendships, these shared activities often are not. Similar interest may bring people together, but what makes friends stay together is a sense of belonging and support. Most people find friends who can provide for them something that they do not receive from their families.
Each scar, each mark, all represent a story from throughout her life. Kay uses tone, similes and imagery to help develop her theme of “hands say what words can’t”. To start, throughout the poem the author's tone helps communicate the theme of “hands say what words can’t”. While describing
Darkness is something that holds onto every life, and every life has a different way to overcome it, adjust to it, and most never fully accept that it is apart of their lives, and go on believing that everything is okay. If one does not accept that darkness is within that, surrounding them, or apart of their lives in some way, then they will always live in constant misery, whether knowing or
The most influential, important, and critical relationship amongst humanity is a trusting and attentive friend. A friend is anyone who is supportive of one 's best and compassionate at one 's worst. A friend is an absolutely essential connection to maintain throughout a lifetime. According to the Huffington Post, lack of friendship has been associated with higher chances of a premature death than obesity. Consequently, friendships are required not only for mental health but for longevity.
The Glass Castle and jennet walls and I kinda have something in common, she had a pretty dysfunctional family with christmases and moving a lot. Jennet had many obstacles she had to go through with moving all the time she had to make new friends she was bullied her parents didn't have a whole lot of money so they had to skimp with things like christmas. She had siblings that she had to look out for since her parents were kinda neglective. This didn't stop her from being successful in her life though she is now happily married and she know has a different look out on life then most of use from growing up on the streets she doesn't take anything for granted.
When I was a teenager, the cool thing to do was hang out with friends, party, and drink alcohol, so I thought. My friends and I would tend to follow the crowd and it seemed to always lead to trouble. I was only 14 years old the night it all began. At the time, I could not drive so my friends came and picked me up, we all went to a house party and alcohol was there. Because we were senseless and easily influenced, we decided to try some to fit in.
They hold me accountable, and make me be the best I can be. My friends may not be the smartest, or the nicest ,or the most talented but they are true to
It is a universally held beleif that addiction ruins lives. Affecting the young and old, male and female, and people from different ethnicities, cultures, and social brackets, addiction is widely regarded as a societal illness with no easy solution. A particularily damaging assumption is that a drug or sex addict, for instance, is the root cause of their own suffering. This can potentially lead to a chain reaction where the guilt placed upon a human being strengthens the desire to escape from said guilt. This is particularily damaging to a teenager, to whom an external stimuli is no longer required after a few years of guilt inflicted by their parents.
Darkness can be a comfortable place for anyone. Without having to look at yourself or have people see you, one may not feel as judged or insecure. Light is revealing. In a bright room, you can’t hide tears, blemishes, or emotions. Blanche, from A Streetcar Named Desire, knows the pain of light all to well.
To whom it may concern; Did you ever notice how there are flavors like orange, cucumber, strawberry Kiwi and others, but there’s no cranberry? Imagine how much better Gatorade would be if it had this flavor! Adding this flavor would increase sales from the excitement of a new flavor to try! Especially from cranberry lovers like me. I love cranberry and I love Gatorade, I know I would love this new drink if you added it to your flavors.
