Work with children Throughout my high school and college years, I have had several experiences with children that have all played a part in shaping my love for working with children. During high school, I spent two summers nannying for two young school aged children. Working with these siblings really made me realize how much fun I have working with children and watching them grow. Once I came to college, I started another babysitting job working with two four year old twin girls. This job really taught me about the importance of children having a routine to follow as well as the impact teachers can have on a child’s life. After my first year in college, I realized that I wanted to gain more experience with children of all ages. Shortly after, …show more content…
Most of my field work has been in The Akron Public School District which has allowed me to gain a lot of experience with urban youth students in the Akron area. I have been placed into preschool, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and high school classrooms which has allowed me to be given a wide variety of experiences with teachers and students. During my placement in the preschool classroom, I was able to learn about the importance of including lessons that enrich each area of a child’s development. While working with the Kindergarten students, I was able to observe a classroom that was run based on centers and small group instruction. I enjoyed working with the students in this classroom as many of the centers were game based which established a fun way for the students to learn. While in the first grade classroom, I was able to form a great relationship with my mentor teacher that allowed me to be very hands on with the students throughout the semester. Among many things, I learned how to run an educational circle and calendar time, worked with small groups of students to improve reading, provided practice spelling tests to students, assisted students in developing their writing abilities, and implemented the class’s behavior management plan. While I worked with the fifth grade
Elaine: I love working with children, I always felt I could make a difference and be able to establish a quality program for preschool children. I also enjoy working with parents. I knew I would be able to help and reassure parents especially when their children may have struggles with learning. I always wanted to be the one to help and direct them to the proper professional whether it is speech pathology, occupational therapy, or playgroup therapy. 2.
During that time I got involved with research and started working at the childcare center as a counselor. I truly enjoyed working with children helping them to learn new skills, planning different activities, motivating and engaging them. I found that experience incredibly enjoyable and rewarding and decided to further explore the studies of psychology and child development in
Although, I have done various volunteer activities and work one in particular that has truly changed my life was Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem focuses on a demographic that normally goes over looked, their mission is to help children whose parents’ have been affected by cancer. When I signed up to volunteer as a counselor I was unaware I was becoming involved with something bigger than myself. The imprint the children left on me is something I would never want to erase, they taught me love and empathy on a whole new spectrum. Becoming a part of this program as teacher will give me the opportunity to share this gift with my students and host community.
A lot of the time, however, I would pull kids out of class and help them on a paper that they didn't understand or we would read books together. I loved to help them because it put a smile on their
08/14 My son kevin has been having bad dreams lately, there is supposedly a man in his room at night. He tells me they arent dreams, but this supposed mystery man is clearly just a figment of his imagination, when I was a child my mind came up with the craziest things. I remember I used to think my teddy bear would actually walk to my sisters room when I was asleep, turns out that my sister was just jealous and she snuck in and kidnapped him every night. 08/16 Kevin told me that he heard whispering through his closet last night that woke him up, I asked him why he didnt come get me to inspect his room for monsters, and he told me that he was too scared to get out of bed. I blame myself for letting him watch scary movies before bedtime.
In the beginning of the school year I started to seriously think about what I wanted to spend my thirty hours on. I really wanted to do something that would help others, I wanted to give back to my community. So I made my decision based off of my person experiences. I learned at a young age how unpleasant it is to not have when you truly need, especially when kids of all ages can be very mean.
As I was walking through classrooms today it became apparent, again, how well our teachers and aides provide such a wonderful education. Mrs. Vandebossche had students looking through microscopes examining pond water to pick out paramecium and other simple life forms. They were excited to find new specimens swimming around and interacting with each other. Mrs. Lyons was describing novels and their story lines to her students getting them excited about reading. Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Pfister, Mr. Wilcox and Mrs. Coon were discussing the upcoming Veteran’s Day ceremony to teach kids and honor our vets.
I was given the task of teaching the alphabet and numbers to the children. I quickly gained the maturity and patience to instruct and guide students through the knowledge they need to know. By the end of the respective summers I had a greater appreciation for the job of teaching. Volunteer work
As the days progress, there are always new adventures waiting each day. I constantly learn new skills, meet wonderful educators, volunteers, and most importantly, assist children who have the potential and enthusiasm to achieve different goals. My day started on a rainy, Monday morning, no different than any other Monday, so I thought. I traveled to Johns Island on this day; Angel Oak Elementary School happened to be my morning destination. When I arrived, I did not expect any additional duties, other than observing tutors and students throughout sessions.
I researched and found different ways to breaking down the material that I teach. I try and make it hands on to ensure that the knowledge is being retained. Now as a classroom I have become more reasonable with my students and their learning. We have become a family, and I can see the growth in each and every one of my
From then I volunteered to work with the local Special Olympics group. For me this was a rewarding time in my life. The group had a range of children from five to adults. From this experience, the love to work with children grew for me. It also helped further develop my patience skills as it would take longer for the children to learn.
Lastly, working as a child care provider in a daycare setting improved my leadership skills and taught me the meaning of unconditional love. These past experiences have morphed me into the person I am today and enriched the lives of individuals I have encountered through serving others. I take pride in the way I handle myself in a professional work environment, and plan on giving my all to the Pathways to Healthcare
Whether it’s babysitting, volunteering with children, or spending time with my three younger siblings, I have had a lot of experience working with children. I began my babysitting experience with my siblings, then family friends and neighbors. But, my best and favorite customers have been my parents that frequently have me care for my two sisters (ages 10 and 3) and brother (age 7) and we enjoy playing games, reading stories, and making art and crafts; also, I help them do homework, feed them meals and put them to sleep. Having younger siblings, I’ve truly grown to love working with children, and especially teaching them. At school, I am the vice-president of our Kids in Science and Engineering club, which is dedicated to spreading passion and knowledge of science and engineering to elementary school students.
To me this was a huge help because it was hard to be in a school that taught a language that I didn’t know. I was a fast learner and I adjusted well but without this teacher my transition would of been harder. While doing observation hours I was able to see kids that face the same struggles I once did and it’s not easy.
One of the unique aspects of the Department of Child Development and Family Relations is that many of the department’s large core courses offer teaching assistant opportunities to undergraduate students. Teaching assistant opportunities are valuable for undergraduate students to decide whether to apply as a graduate teaching position, great addition to a resume, and for a letter of recommendation. From my teaching assistant experience, I was able to fully grasp the concepts of middle childhood development, form a new appreciation for professors and teaching assistants, and reflect on myself as a student. In addition, I had the opportunity to strengthen several essential skills such as organizational skills, leadership skills, and communication
