Sometimes in life it takes the influence of one person to change your perspective on life. My English professor invested time into my success that allowed me to fully understand my purpose. Growing up my ability to communicate hindered my relationship with people. Frustrated and embarrassed by my lisp tongue I muted myself from the outside world. My professor recommended speech services that enhanced my communication abilities and improved my overall quality of life. I am a product of a successful treatment plan facilitated by a speech pathologist. If it were not for the hard work and dedication of numerous therapy sessions I would not be able to effectively communicate my desires. At this juncture in my life my outlook has changed, my future goals has been altered, and most importantly my self-confidence has increased. My struggles became my …show more content…
Through research experience to volunteer sites, I have developed skill sets meaningful to the communication field. During my senior year I assisted children on the spectrum at Albert Einstein College of Medicine with literacy skills. As an undergraduate student I work on average of 40 hours a week to support myself. I have been able to maintain a consistent GPA while working and attending school activities. At that moment in my life I developed time management skills, which will be indispensable in graduate school. I have learned the true definition of what it means to service and assist a range of people from my volunteer work at Regis Care center, Dumont center for Rehabilitation and Graham Elementary School. While volunteering at these sites I worked diligently with speech language pathologists. Participation in the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association have given me the opportunity to volunteer at innumerable
I have scored 4s and 5s on seven AP tests by the end of sophomore year, and obtained a research internship at Barrows Neurological Institute and ASU Speech and Hearing lab. Even though the odds were against me in the beginning, my family’s cultural legacy has allowed me to
PURPOSE STATEMENT: TO INFORM MY AUDIENCE WHY I WANT TO BECOME A SPEECH THERAPIST. CI: HOW MY PAST AND PRESENT LIFE EXPERIENCES HAVE HELPED CREATE A FUTURE GOAL OF BECOMING A SPEECH THERAPIST. It was the last Saturday before my classes were to start, and I was enjoying sleeping late in my room.
In my first three years of high school, I have had many struggles that have taken me on a different track than what I expected. My freshman year I had received four concussions. Some of these were sports related while others just happening by accident. These accidents left me missing tons of school and made me fall behind. Classes were hard to keep up with mentally as well as emotionally.
Education, in general is such a vital part of my life, I wouldn’t be the devoted, hard-working student I am today without it; therefore, I value it greatly. Graduate education is very crucial to my career because I would not be qualified as a speech pathologist without my Master’s degree. Additionally, there are several other reasons why I believe it is important to me. One reason is that on a graduate level, I am taught more in-depth lectures regarding the scopes of practice that a speech pathologist will be expected to know and perform well in. Furthermore, I will be assigned clients and will gain clinical experience from treating clients with a variety of ages, which can contribute to me becoming a well-rounded speech therapist.
The profession of Speech Language Pathology enables others to be heard and gives them the ability to have a voice. As a Communication Disorders major, I found my voice through education and personal experiences. During my undergraduate career, I have balanced extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and leadership roles while maintaining superior grades in my coursework. However, my qualities go far beyond my list of accomplishments. Passion, my value of education, and my objective to improve the lives of others have driven me to pursue a career in Speech Language Pathology.
When someone asks me what I want to do in life, one main goal always comes to my mind. That goal is to have a positive influence, whether it’s big or small, on the world around me. This may sound vague or cliche, but it’s the truth. This is why I am pursuing a degree in speech pathology and also why I want to participate in an alternative break trip. I want to take advantage of this amazing opportunity that the University of Delaware offers, to make a difference in someone’s life.
My future plans include going off to Utica College for nursing. I have known my major since I was five years old and my education that has been provided has only encouraged my decision. Even though I am going off into the medical field, my time spent playing sports, being in the drama club, national honors society, and participating in community has actually influenced my decision to do so. The mission statement to be educationally affective and academically effective has been shown through and through here at Little
It was difficult getting to where I am currently with trying to understand who I was? And who I am? Why I was going through what I was going through? How to understand and interpret what felt almost alien. It wasn’t until after getting into the University of South Carolina as a Biology major that I knew that that wasn’t what I was meant to be doing.
It was the last inning in our all-star game, and we were losing 10 to 8. Our team had 2 outs and we couldn’t get the third. Our pitcher was doing bad, throwing all balls, while all of us in the field were tired, ready to fall asleep at any moment. There goes another walk. They score again.
One of the many motives I love the field of speech-language pathology, is the immense selection of professional opportunities available, from our schools and clinics to medical institutions. I love the idea of being challenged by new, real world experiences in speech-language pathology, and it is important to me that I continue to give back to my community. I know that The University of Texas Communication Speech Disorders program will help me in achieving these goals beyond what any other
Quietly stored away in my brain are the honest and humble memories of the six years I spent serving some of the poorest nursing homes in my community and schools for handicapped children. The service group I founded put on performances for, and spent time socializing with, thousands of people with physical or mental limitations. There were countless moments when I knew I was making a difference just by taking the time to listen, or by letting someone hold my hand. Running this non-profit alone was a tremendous undertaking that absorbed hours beyond calculation. Although there were times of frustration, they paled in comparison to the solitary moments I witnessed as our group made a positive mark on one individual after another.
All of the setbacks I have had, and obstacles that life has thrown at me, have only made my determination, my will power, and me even stronger. Once I have set my mind on something, I do not give up until I achieve and accomplish it. With my hard work and dedication, I know that I will excel in graduate school. As a graduate student, I am eager and anxious to expand on my knowledge and experiences in speech pathology. I have the motivation and passion, that I know that in combination with the knowledge from a master's degree at UTRGV with its 100% passing rate for 8 years in a row, will help me achieve my goals and will allow me to make a difference and an impact in people’s
Recently, I shadowed a speech pathologist, Lisa Nelson, in a retirement community. This experience was rewarding as I saw the extent of what a speech pathologist can do. There was one
I struggled with my education since the age of nine. I lived in an abusive home for three years while changing schools constantly and later being transferred into the foster care system until my mother gained full custody of my siblings and I. Thanks to my counselors, I was able to focus my mind on my education. They always believed in me and guided to take the appropriate steps through my education and through my personal relationships. I have jumped obstacles and I will continue to thrive for success. By helping students with their academic goals, I will be able to provide students the opportunities that were given to me by different counselors.
We are always told that actions speak louder than words, but sometimes I think words fill the spaces that actions can't. Growing up in a small Texas town, I was never fond of reading. Especially as a Hill Country kid, I was always outside despite the unbearable heat or blinding sun. It wasn’t until middle school that I really fell in love with reading. Reading prior had always felt like a chore
