I was only six months old when my birth family decided they couldn’t take care of me. I had a serious medical condition that needed surgery, they knew they couldn’t afford. I Needed to get open heart surgery because I had a leaking valve in my heart. Blood wasn’t able to pump to the rest of my body. You hear of children being left at a police station or being left on a door step. I had a different experience. I was left on a busy bridge. My family wrapped me with a basket with a note. The note had my name on it, my birthday and my situation. After roughly an hour someone finally took me to the hospital.
Once I was taken to the hospital my blood wasn’t circulating fast enough to the rest of my body causing my skin turn blue. The hospital was able to find an organization to pay for my surgery. I was then flown to Beijing to a more equipped hospital. I was too young to remember anything from the surgery. But, for the surgery to happen, my heart wouldn’t be able to beat on its own. I was hooked up to a machine that would pump all the blood to the rest of my body. The surgery had taken roughly 2-4 hours and a long recovery were on its way.

I lived with this family for roughly a year. I wasn’t able to remember so all I know is what I was told. The family that I was staying with spoiled me with five whole bowls of ice cream a day. I wasn’t told much more besides the fact that I loved them. I wish I knew more about my foster family, but I
My eyes were closed. I could not move, but I could hear everything. Doctors were yelling and frantically scurrying all around me. I could hear the shouting of medicines and dosages as doctors pushed fluids into my IV. Suddenly, everything went blank, and that 's all I remember from my first hospitalization.
Introduction Imagine growing up with the fear of constantly being abused by your parents, or not knowing the next time that your caretakers would feed you. Believe it or not, that is the reality for many children living in the United States, which is why the foster care system was established. The foster care system was created to find homes for children who are unable to live with their biological parents, for reasons such as death, abuse, or an unhealthy home environment. Today, there are around 500,000 children residing in the system, and this figure is growing daily (American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 2013). There has been some controversy about how the government handles the foster care system, as some believe that there
I started moving too fast, and I tripped, cut open my hand, and started bleeding. I figured I had better leave and visit it again, but the blood from my hands got on the wall. Everything got bright and then suddenly I was floating. I blacked out and woke up to a police officer staring at my and my parents happy I was safe. I had been gone for 12 hours with-out contact.
I had never felt so sick or so scared before. The nurses acted fast, administering an antidote to the Tylenol through an IV in my arm. As soon as my mom heard the news, she dropped everything and made the two-hour drive to the hospital, arriving after midnight. I felt ashamed that she had to see me in that state, and guilty for how much I must have worried her. I spent my first two days there hooked up to machines and too weak to stand up for longer than a couple minutes at a time, and she stayed by my side.
It was stage four bone cancer. The patient, Father Peter Pham, was from Vietnam but came to the United States in hopes of receiving free cancer treatment from a New York hospital. To his disappointment, the hospital had already given its monthly pro bono case to another patient. So, while waiting for the next available opening, he journeyed to Georgia where he had acquaintances. Father Peter visit marred with pain.
The transition from eighth grade to ninth grade is one of the most difficult but unforgettable things a student must do in his adolescence. For me, it was filled with new opportunities of taking Ap classes and joining clubs. One of these cubs was Youth and Government (Y&G). For as long as I can remember my brother, Riad, has boasted about how amazing Y&G is and how it has changed his life. My brother is three years older then me, so as a freshman he was a senior in Y&G.
The foster care system is successful in helping these children have an equal opportunity and a chance for a “normal life”. Foster care requires protection and the service to children to give them the best family and provide the wellbeing of the child. By removing a child from their given home and into safe facilities, it can give them the necessary resources to grow and adapt. Indeed, a foster parent can learn to love a child as if they were their own and provide for them just as a parent should. In a news report, “Love revealed in brokenness,” a foster mother explains how she fought a biological mother in court to win custody of her future foster child.
According to Crosson-Tower (2010), children enter foster care for causes such as but not limited to physical abuse, physical neglect, sexual abuse, emotional maltreatment, domestic violence, substance abuse, and physical or mental illness of parents. In addition, she states that the death of parents can cause a child to enter foster care if no available relatives could undertake their care. Many of these causes of child maltreatment may also come from parents who are poor, uneducated, and experienced childhood trauma (Crosson-Tower, 2010). Therefore, the cycle of child abuse and neglect will continue if not provided the necessary services to prevent and treat the
It will be 5 years this June that I have been in the Foster Care System, I can still remember walking home from school smelling the fresh breeze of air, all the sweaty kids running to their cars waiting to head home from school, or to the ice cream trucks that all had the same foul smell of cheese and takis that followed every breeze that came near. There was a black car, the one time is what we referred them to, this was something that was not out of the ordinary to see around my home. But today was different, two men wearing business suits stepped out of it and went into my home. I stayed back just to get a glimpse of what was going on. I see my mom rush out of the house and into the car, little did I know this would be the last time I would see her as a
Introduction Children in foster care have been legally removed from their birth families and placed under the care and control of state-run child welfare agencies. Every year, almost 30,000 kids age out of the foster care system after childhoods when many moves from house to house and school to school (NPR). For most foster kids, as soon as they turn 18, they're cut off from a place to live and financial support. They're suddenly on their own, suddenly responsible to find housing, money, clothing, and food; while trying to continue their education, and in most cases, they give up pursuing the latter path. While other kids their age are still getting help from a parent or guardian.
We had a total of 18 children placed with us during that time – ranging in age from one day old to 16 years old. There were 3 sets of twins among them – two sets of premature newborn twins with many medical concerns and issues and a physically abused 9-week-old infant. I had always wanted to try foster parenting, but knew I’d have to have the right partner to do a good job. My maternal grandfather said often when I was a child that if he had enough money he would build a big house and take in all children that needed homes and hire a nurse and teacher to live with them. I never forgot that.
6 years ago my cousin, Payton, came to stay with us. At the time we didn 't think anything would be permanent. Now, six long years later, I couldn 't imagine what my life would be like without my brother. Sometimes, parents are unwilling, unable, or unfit to care for their children.
My passion for healthcare lies with patient care. I enjoy taking care of patients and their family. I have chosen to become a family nurse practitioner because I can combine nursing and medicine to provide a higher level of care to my patients. As a nurse practitioner will be able to make an impact on my patient’s health through, health promotion, disease prevention, managing acute and chronic conditions and improving patient’s health (Wynne,
I was told my mother was on her way and would meet me there. The two words, "Emergency Room" made me think football might be over, When we finally arrived at the hospital; the paramedics took me to an empty bed where my Mom was already waiting. I have never like hospitals, everyone always sounds like they are going to die and the constant long drawn out beeps from the heart monitors always going off. The smell in the hospital didn’t help either. The nurse came in with a needle that in my memory looked long enough to go through my arm. "
Under the knife I remember my very first surgery. It wasn’t major but to me, an 8-year-old child, the thought of having needles and knives and people all around me scared me awfully. When my mom first told me I’d have to have teeth removed I thought I was going to die.
