“You must be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Ghandi was one of the greatest masters of change that has ever lived. To better understand my purpose in life, I’ve spent much time reflecting on his inspirational words. What change would I like to see in the world and how can I be that change? I grew up in a town so small that our community college was surrounded by cornfields on three sides. There were few opportunities in such a small school, especially when it came to scholarships. I am eager to bring additional scholarship opportunities to my community college, starting with the Presidential scholarship from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) for which I could be the first awardee from McHenry County College (MCC). Once at IIT, I hope to challenge the status quo by developing a new innovative program as a collaborative effort between multiple disciplines. I’ll begin by increasing future MCC students’ awareness of this generous scholarship opportunity. MCC’s Chi Upsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa includes guest speakers at their monthly meetings. The Phi Theta Kappa faculty advisors have already extended an open invitation for me to speak at their monthly meetings next year. I see this as an opportunity to discuss how I won such a prestigious award with some of MCCs highest achieving students and encourage them to do the same. I will also utilize the strong relationships I’ve built with the MCC scholarship office, as well as the science and mathematics departments, to increase awareness of the Presidential scholarship. I am eager to visit my old high school so that I may speak with students and teachers about IIT and STEM related
