Personality defines a person. Due to personality humans are able to differentiate themselves among others. It’s an important concept and its origin should be questioned. Is personality an inborn concept or are humans predisposed to factors that form and shape their personality? In "Sex and Temperament," Margaret Mead explores this concept. Men and women are predisposed to societal factors that influence their personality. This can be seen through their behavior and cognitive differences.

Although both men and women have the same qualifications, it is statistically evident that men have a greater likelihood of getting hired. As a result of men being hired more, women consequently tend to feel inferior. . Kay and Shipman state,“ Compared with men, women don’t consider themselves as ready for promotions, they predict they’ll do worse on tests, and they generally underestimate their abilities. This disparity stems from factors ranging from upbringing to biology.” These feelings of inferiority then cause women to never fully explore their potential, thus fulfilling that prophecy that women are less qualified than men. In “The Confidence Gap” by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman it is stated how in a survey women are asked how they feel in their professions. Kay and Shipman state, “The shortage of female confidence is increasingly well quantified and well documented. In 2011, the Institute of Leadership and Management, in the United Kingdom, surveyed British managers about how confident they feel in their professions. Women, following this ruling, would continue to be placed in lower jobs than men on the basis that they were not interested in it and had different values than men. This argument was accepted without any disagreement, continuing the long held stereotypes of women. Stereotypes of women were used as a justification for not allowing women to be placed in jobs that are normally dominated by men. These personal characteristics also seemed to be expected for all women. All women were perceived to fall under the umbrella of not wanting to take jobs that involved competitiveness, risky salary, and deterred from the normal working hours.
Women have come a long way throughout history from the right to vote to be able to work in the workplace. They have faced a lot of discrimination but have been able to fight through each situation, but yet there are disparities between men and women in the workplace from the pay gap to positions. But why are these disparities present? Katty Kay and Clarie Shipman, writers of the article The Confidence Gap, believe the answer is confidence. This article argues that the reason why women do not pursue higher positions is due to low confidence through a pathos appeal directed at the audience, an ethos appeal given by the credibility of the authors, and a logos appeal by a variety of statistics and studies.
Most people believe the hypotheses is right, and teachers also follow this rule to educate their students. Chapter 11 covers personality. Personality means the traits that make a person who they are. It is part of our uniqueness. Sigmund Freud came up with one of the first comprehensive theory of personality. He also recognized that our mental life happens outside of our conscious awareness.
This can be supported by a quote from an article titled “Women In STEM: The Truth About Working In A Male-Dominated Field And How To Get More Girls On Board”. It says, “Priya says not only does it make life unpleasant for women in employment, but it actively discourages women from entering the industry in the first place” (Driscoll 1). This is false because although it may seem like there are more men in STEM fields, most technological companies actually want to have women working for them. In support of this, an article titled “Women in STEM” states, “In fact, many companies want to hire and keep qualified women for STEM jobs” (Career Wise 1). As can be seen from the evidence presented by Careerwise, this stereotype can be debunked because it shows that women can persevere through all the hardships even when brought down.
Gender roles in some causes can define who you can become. Men and women both can feel influenced by gender roles. What if a dad wanted to be a stay at home dad and his wife go to work? Would this dad feel like he could? In some cases, gender roles increase the competition.
It is disputed whether nurture or nature is more dominant in forging a person’s identity. Whether a person is happy or sad, kind or cruel, smart or unintelligent is based on their genetics or the environment around them. Of course, both factor into the equation, but one does more so than the other: while people can have genetic differences, the way that they are raised is far more influential on their personalities. For example, women are reported to have high neuroticism, agreeable, extraversion and openness factors towards feelings. On the other hand, men are reported high towards the factors extraversion and openness in thoughts. The differences in gender personality traits are not just between men and women but the differences in personality traits are there because of the society we are brought up as. In developed countries, men would be less neurotic, extraverted, conscientious and agreeable. Where as, in developing countries, the big five traits would be higher.
Gender-bias arises especially on occupations that men choose. Countries like United States, Italy, Ireland, Greece and United Kingdom are present with gender gaps (Pearson, p. 20). Gender-bias especially in the workplace cannot be stop and more women will suffer from the discrimination brought by prevailing issues of women working. Gender bias creates a feeling of being deprived and judged in a certain place that gives a huge effect to employees especially on female employees. And if this will continue, more women will have hard time to prove themselves in the workplace which might cause less productivity towards their work.

Dreher and Ash (1990) state that mentoring is related to promotions, while Scandura (1992) indicated that mentoring is related to career mobility. Though, Fagenson (1989) stated that mentoring is related to career satisfaction. Mentoring relationships are important for everyone that aspires for career advancement, but they are even more important for women (Research Focus, 2009).
Personality is the way one behaves, thinks and feels. Theorists are interested to learn what shapes personality, what causes one to behave, think and feel the way one does. Different theorists have different beliefs in what causes these individual differences. These individual differences can be split into two categories, nature and nurture. Nature would be environment while nature would be the brain and the genes, also known as genotype.

Personality theory is the approaches to understanding the “What”, “How” and “When” of characteristics and features that make up an individual 's personality. An insight into personality is important to understand the function of a person’s mind. By doing this you would be able to understand and observe your own psyche from an outside perspective, interact with others better and understand why they do what they do or predict how someone may react to something. My personality can be describe as Introverted since I am reserved, practical and quiet.
