All year round schooling. During the summer most students are at home or on trips with family, some are in school working all summer long. It is not because they have summer school, but it is because their school has switched to all year round schooling. The students could be invited over when they are in school; if their friends or family from different schools that does not have all year round schooling. Some students will not have a summer or get to spend anytime with their friends. This is sad and disappointing to hear. All year round schooling would not just affect Ste.Genevieve students, but it would effect the ones that does not have all year round school. During the summer they can always work, but with year round schooling they would have to not work as much, because of the school activities and homework. Not having year round school the students can work on the farm with their family or get their volunteer hours done; also anything else they have to do. The students would be able to work the summertime when they are most needed on the farm, and during the winter they can focus on school and only school so their grades will be good. With having all year round school they would have to focus on their work and school. This could cause them to barely pass or maybe not pass at all. This would interfere with the test scores. The test scores could become lower for some students. Some students and their family take vacations during the summer time or to go spend time with family. Some may even go stay with some friends that they may not get to see often. Some may take a vacation, but may have a camp for programs, clubs, sports, or extra classes that they do. Over the past twenty years, year-round schooling has grown by 544%, now around 10% of kids go to schools where there is year-round schooling (Statistic Brain). When students hear about year-round schooling, they automatically think about the summer break and that they won’t have that. They often forget about the many benefits that year-round schooling offers. There are plenty of reasons year-round schooling is better, it can solve overcrowding, the loss of information over summer break, better academic achievement during the school year, and many more. The school system was designed over a 100 years ago when parents needed their kids to work the fields in the summer.
Students will retain more of their knowledge over their breaks. Academic performance might improve, and some difficulty arises when scheduling extracurricular activities. Summer camps and other similar programs take a drastic hit from this decision. Most people have been talking about whether or not students should be attending school year-round. There are both pros and cons to having a year-round calendar. The main reason people are against change is because more breaks will hurt the students learning. Having more frequent days away from educational learning causes them to forget more. On the opposing side they say having year-round calendars will increase the academics of students.
Traditional school schedules have kids in school from late summer until late spring, the year-round schedule has kids in school all year but the difference is there are longer breaks in the year-round schedule. It is time to switch from the traditional schedule to the year-round schedule because students learn better and don’t lose information over a long summer break, is more convenient for everyone and reduces the stress of school and makes it more enjoyable. Year round school benefit is for a child not to have a lapse in learning or remembering what they’ve learned. That’s when the parents or guardians need’s to step in to continue educational learning. Teachers alone can’t be responsible for the education others need to play their part. Just because summer vacation has started doesn’t mean learning should have stopped. As a student, I believe that you can still learn during the summer without setting in school. People do a lot if camping with their children to learn about the great outdoors. Kids have more time to practice manners, be responsible for family pets, learn how to clean, help with chores and build relationships (Brown). As a student, I believe that kids should have to help around the house. Summer break is the perfect time to try out a new sport, pick up a new hobby, or master a new skill like braiding or gardening (Brown).
