My chosen degree program at Kaplan University is a bachelor’s in health science. I chose this degree program because I am an aspiring physician assistant(PA). I chose this field of study because I have always been inspired to provide service to my community. My mother was a police officer and my father worked as an EMT. I did not choose their specific fields; however, I chose something that I knew fit me. For this assignment, I conducted research to find the, required professional certifications, and program accreditations needed to perform work in this field, the overall job outlook, salary, personality traits fit for this position, and consequently, I outlined my career goals.

The areas that I scored highest are the most important for my profession. Investigative shows that I am interested in researching and finding new ways to improve health and wellness. Being social is extremely important as a physician assistant. You have to work and communicate with many people throughout the day, so there is no room for antisocial behavior. Enterprising and conventional show that I am not afraid to be a leader or make tough decisions while paying close attention to details and following set procedures or rules. After reviewing my personality profile, I know that I have chosen the right profession and I will go forth with my goals. (National Center for O*NET Development, …show more content…
My short-term goal is to complete my bachelor’s degree. I want to do well in all my undergraduate courses and gain as much knowledge as I can. Another short-term goal is to get a job working with patients. I want to work with patients so that I can begin gaining experience with direct-patient care which is a requirement for PA school. My long-term goal is to apply to PA school. I would like to apply to Towson University as soon as I have accomplished all my entry requirements. If I can achieve these goals, I hope to be halfway through PA school and mastering all my courses in five years. I know that I said “if”, but Kaplan University has succeeded in ensuring that students like me have help with achieving their career goals. Kaplan University offers all their students access to career services. This department has a variety of strategies that will help me accomplish my career goals. These strategies include, career assessment, resume building, interview preparation, career networking tips, job-search support, and 24/7 online access to job openings and career development tools. This is the kind of help that I need now in my search for a job that will expose me to direct-patient care. Career Services can help me figure out what job fits me and also fulfills my clinical hours requirement for PA school. (Kaplan University,
In 1968, American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) formerly known as the American Association of Physician Assistants was established in North Carolina by the first graduate students of Duke University Physician Assistant program. Since then PA profession has grown to tremendous heights. The mission statement of the AAPA is, “To ensure the professional growth, personal excellence, and recognition of the physician assistants, and to support their efforts to enable then to improve the quality, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness of patient-centered health care.” The physician assistant profession has shown remarkable growth since its first PAs started practice in 1967.
The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant requires that each PA program provide, "…classroom and laboratory instruction in the basic medical and behavioral sciences (such as anatomy, pharmacology, pathophysiology, clinical medicine, and physical diagnosis), followed by clinical rotations in internal medicine, family medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, and geriatric medicine" (AAPA, 2000). Physician assistants are trained to serve as clinical partners to primary care physicians, handling routine office visits, taking call, and performing inpatient rounds so that the physician is freed up to handle more clinically intensive patient needs (Russel Johns Associates, 2001). Additionally, some PAs support physicians in certain specialty areas such as anesthesiology, radiology, neurology, and gastroenterology performing various levels of technical procedures based on supplemental training and physician granted autonomy (Grandinetti,
Today’s lecture on the physician assistants (PA) was very informative. Mrs. Hughes spoke on what a physician assistant is, what they do as well as what the requirements are for those who chose the career path. PA’s are individuals whom practice medicine while also being under the supervision of medical doctors or physicians. They can work in all areas of medicine including emergency medicine, surgery and psychiatry which Mrs. Hughes works under. Within this occupation individuals have the ability to prescribe medicine, diagnose and treat mental illnesses, give immunizations as well as perform various other tasks.
Working as a physician assistant allows great flexibility in which they can switch between specialties throughout the duration of their career. Being that family medicine has been identified as the most popular specialty within the PA profession, many graduates completing a physician assistant program will pursue a career in this specialty. The family medicine specialty is particularly favored among physician assistants because it allows them to treat patients throughout their whole life and even allows the PA to see patients dealing with many different issues instead of focusing on just one area of medicine; this can be described as a more all inclusive specialty. Physician assistant program lengths typically only last 27 months and the potential to earn a salary of approximately over $100,000 a year makes this specialty favorable as well. With there being a decline in the number of physicians, the physician assistant profession is expected to increase dramatically over the years.
I began my undergraduate education at Colorado State University in 2004. I declared my major as Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. At this point in my life, I had no clue what I wanted to do for my career and thought this would be the best option and give me the most diversity of career options. Going into my sophomore year, I began a job in the emergency department at the hospital located in the college town. During my first day, I got to see a variety of emergent and non-emergent medical procedures.

I took all the sciences I could, eventually majoring in Biochemistry in college to understand the workings of the body. I always thought I wanted to be a pathologist. I was aware of pathology assistants but was unaware of what their job entailed. In my junior year of undergrad, I was fortunate enough to find out that my college worked with a teaching hospital, Montefiore Medical Center. Through them, I was able to obtain an internship in the Surgical
Why choose the medical assisting field? The medical assisting field has several different branches to satisfy different preferences and skill levels. You will have different tasks depending on which type of medical assistant you choose to be. This gives you the chance to assess yourself and figure out what skills you already possess, and also what skills you may need to work on to be the best medical assistant you can be. The medical assisting field has three main branches.
I have chosen public health as my major because it is a dynamic field. I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. It is with great passion that I am dedicated and willing to contribute my service or skills to help someone in need. My philosophy of health education is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities, populations, and societies. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public health.
Since this course would be my first PA course, it is very exciting. Throughout college, I have been taking courses not entirely relevant to the Physician Assistant major. I hope to learn many practical aspects related to physician assistance such as; learning how to take a patient's vitals, learning how to administer a full physical examination, learning about certain diseases, learning how to obtain and record a patient's history. I also want to understand the clinical process in more depth, learning and appreciating the art of medicine, as well as having a deeper appreciation and understanding about the Physician Assistant profession. I also want to obtain a very strong foundation on the Physician Assistant major before graduate school.
Ever since grade school, I was passionate about working in the field of medicine, and science. I enjoyed anatomy, medical spelling and terminology, and reading about the healthcare industry. Because of my passion for healthcare, I decided to to attend Health Sciences High. There, I was given the best opportunities, such as, medical internships and college health courses. My plans and goals had turned me into a mature young adult.
There are many jobs and fields in the healthcare career. Some people may want to be a Oncologist, Gynecologist, Neurosurgeon, Registered Nurse, or a Certified Nursing Assistant. Every person has a different passion and reason they want to be what they want to be. While some people may want to work as a doctor in trauma, I want to become a nurse practitioner and work in some type of pediatric field. Yet, becoming a nurse practitioner is not that simple.

Helping students make successful transitions from high school to their next step in life is one of the most basic, but important tasks a school counselor faces. Proper career development activities include, establishing career and vocational preferences, narrowing occupational choices, developing career goals, and formulating long-term career plans (Hargrove, Creagh, & Burgess, 2002). With my research on the future of A.I., it is predicted that while many jobs we have today will be phased out, countless more jobs will emerge. Current models of job searching and career planning are facing a major paradigm shift in how we think about training our children with the skills they need to be relevant in the future job market.
After pondering my passions and interests, as well as combing through different degree options, I found myself extremely intrigued with the School of Kinesiology. More specifically, with their Sport Management program. Sports are something that I have always been passionate about, due to their unique ability to bring extremely diverse groups of people together to work for a common goal. In addition to this, business is something that has always interested me as I found myself taking various
