Increasing minimum wage is a constant debate among today’s workforce. The company needs to plan and prepare for these instances before they occur. Increased wages throughout the organization, especially for entry-level associates who make up most of the employees, could have a negative effect on net sales and profits. At the same time, increased wages could have a positive effect on the purchases made by customers. One of the cons to increasing the minimum wage is that it helps larger corporations and hurts smaller businesses, therefore, competition is decreased. The bigger companies use raising wages acts as a barrier to entry to new business entering the market and create a monopoly for larger companies who have more profits to afford the increase. An example of this is Wal-Mart, who can afford to pay employees nine dollars and twenty cents an hour but a little store such as Meijer 's who does not make as much profit would limit their hiring of new employees and would cut hours to compensate. A family store might decide that the cost of entering the market is too high to endure as they build up their clientele and develop their business they decide not

An issue that is hotly debated is whether or not the current minimum wage, which is $7.25 an hour, should be raised or kept the same. President Obama thinks that raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour would be a good idea, but others oppose the idea. Raising the minimum wage would not be a good idea for several reasons. Some people believe that raising the minimum wage could possibly do harm to the economy that is already recovering from the Great Recession, however, others say raising the minimum wage would boost the economy. According to the article “Should the Minimum Wage Be Raised”, raising the minimum wage could cause businesses to have to cut the hours of workers, fire them, or higher fewer of them in the future (Smith).
Workers across the United States wish to raise the minimum wage to ten dollars. Minimum wage should not be increased because people who work at fast food restaurants should not get paid as much as someone who workers harder than they do and it would not be a benefit to the people of the United States. Minimum wage means you get paid the minimum you can receive for working every hour, why wouldn’t an individual want to get paid at the maximum limit they could earn instead? Employees who would like to get a higher income need to get a more professional job. There are plenty of fast food restaurants in every state and they are always hiring full-time and part-time jobs, but shouldn’t adults work somewhere with more benefits, such as a hospital or a school?
