There are a lot of changes people want to be made in present day North Carolina. Before we handle today’s problems, we should look back on past problems and see how to fix them. There were many problems long ago but thanks to a man named Archibald Murphey, they were resolved. When you look back at it, a lot of the problems from back then are recurring.
There are many issues in current day North Carolina, like any state. But, there were also problems a long time ago too. We had problems with government, education, slavery, our economy, isolation, and farming. Our government was unfairly divided. The control of it was given to the wealthy North Carolinian 's, or, the east side. The problem with this was that the easterners didn’t think that they should have to pay for the poor people 's things, kind of like today. Our education system was also very messed up long ago. Siding with the fact that easterners didn’t want to pay for others things, there were no schools in the west. There were only 177 schools at the time and you had to be rich to go to it. Since this was the case, westerners worked on the farm instead of attending school.

Having slaves took jobs away from common people, causing the southern states to fall behind the northern states. That isn’t the only thing that was hurting our economy back then because of the creation the cotton gin. This creation made the economy fail because we focused more on it than industrializing. At the time, even farmers were failing because they didn’t get an education, so they didn’t know how to take care of soil, so they didn’t know about crop rotation. Due to the fact that North Carolina was so isolated, farmers could never even sell out of state because there aren’t any

There was much tension in the Reconstruction. The north killed Reconstruction in the south because the government frauds took away all President
North and South Carolina used to be on big colony but ended up splitting in the year 1729 because of the differences in the colonies and the conflicts they caused. To name a few, North Carolina's population was manly made up of farmers that planted things like tobacco and corn. They also used ports in Virginia instead of the ones in South Carolina because it was very difficult to trade in the Southern ports. Whereas in South Carolina about half of the population was made up of African slaves that knew how to farm. Because of this the south was able to have large plantations and become very prosperous, they also relied on their own ports unlike the North.
First of all, the problem with bringing the South and the North together is that they should’ve taken one issue at a time. They were juggling between the issue of slavery, economic problems, and state power. It was too much at the same time and was asking things to clash. They didn’t make sure that both of the issues weren’t addressed fairly either.
Who Killed Reconstruction? “The blacks, as a people, are unfitted for the proper exercise of political duties…..” said a Boston newspaper in 1873 saying that the Africans-Americans were too dumb to be in Congress or any political office. Three years later, was the 100th year anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. With the irony of the election of 1876 had officially crushed the African-American dream. In 1877, the Reconstruction efforts finally ended, so people were wondering who killed Reconstruction.
The North then makes it apparent that the didn 't care or reconstruction, but were not in fear of the kkk. The North gave up on reconstruction, who used to be supportive of it, and that showed that they had put an end to it. The Northern reconstruction by not wanting to send government official s, having Grant preoccupied, and changing their views of reconstruction and the South. By getting tired of the South having their officials, Grand having to pay attention to only frauds, and opposing reconstruction, the North killed reconstruction.
Slaves were needed to help develop the America’s economy by harvesting cotton because industrial companies need it for profit. The overabundance of cotton later caused the price of cotton to decrease while the cost of finished goods that used cotton increased. Both slavery and industry coincided heavily together. As the cost of cotton decreased the need for slaves, to compensate for loss of income, increased. Slaves had to work harder to meet higher financial demands of their masters because tariffs that were supposed to help farmers ended up hurting them.
If the slaves missed a few days working on the plantation because of illness or what the case maybe that resulted in revenue loss. Whereas the North had many other alternatives to making revenue, such as mills and other manufacturing companies; the South basically depending on slaves to have income and to support their
No matter your stance at the time, one thing became clear: socially, politically and economically, slavery was the fabric of American success and gave birth to the Old South as we know it today. At the center of the entire institution of slavery, and central to its defense, was the economic domination it provided a young country in international markets. In the early 19th century, cotton was a popular commodity and overtook sugar as the main crop produced by slave labor. The production of cotton became the nation’s top priority; America supplied ¾ of the cotton supply to the entire world.
The South was able to produce 7/8 of the worlds cotton supply. The South became more dependent on the planted field system and it’s full of force part, slavery. Notably, at that moment, the North was flourishing industrially. The North depended on factories and others
Northerners lost interest in the South and their problems. “Weary of the ‘Negro Question’ and sick of ‘Carpet-bag’ government, many Northern voters shifted their attention....” (Document C). The North was tired of being asked the Negro question (where blacks being protected in the South) and having to worry about the corrupt government in the south. This quote is explaining that the North decided to go elsewhere and deal with other problems.

Disputes were caused by disagreements between the North’s and the South’s way of life. The Reconstruction’s purpose was supposed to be a time period of forgiveness for the Union. Consequently, it led to many disagreements between the North and South. Overall, reconstruction was a time period of challenges, which led to failures, rather than a period of
Imagine if the cotton businesses had no slaves the Southerners would have to create their own factories, for example, if they did have to create their own industry, they would have to sell all their slaves and that’s one of the last things that they wanted to do. If the South had no slaves, they would have to do everything all by themselves. According to page 242 it says " planters would have had to sell slaves to raise the money to build factories, most wealthy southerners had their wealth invested in land and slaves. Planters would have had to sell slaves to raise the money to build factories. Most wealthy southerners were unwilling to do this.
With the rise in the production of cotton, the south needed more slaves in order to control and to work the cotton production. This invention increased the demand for slave labor. The invention of The Cotton Gin led to a prosperity in the Southern economy creating a one-crop economy for the South. There was a pressure put on the relationship between the North and the South and their different perceptions of slavery
