What does water taste like? Have you ever tried to describe the flavor of water to someone? Professionalism, like the taste of water, is defined differently by each person you ask. Some equate professionalism with appearance, some explain professionalism as having a certain skill set and still others define it as simply being a professional. Most definitions of professionalism are vague and extremely open to interpretation. At the simplest level professionalism with patients comes down to expectations, intentions and perceptions. Patient expectations are preconceived ideas of how they feel they should be treated when in the healthcare setting. Generally people might not think of professionalism as important when dealing with fellow co-workers but simple courtesies such as greeting others with a smile, respecting co-workers privacy by not spreading gossip and giving your undivided attention to someone when they are speaking to you speak loudly to others as signs of being a professional. These days professionalism with co-workers also involves being mindful of what you post on social media. Work related rants or disparaging remarks about fellow co-workers is unquestionably unprofessional. Ordinarily professionalism is a self-motivated skill set, yet it can also involve stepping in and helping a co-worker self-reflect and improve their professionalism for the good of the whole team. Accordingly, "unprofessional behavior in a medical setting is disruptive to the concept of teamwork, and even if it does not pose an immediate threat to a patient, any behavior that results in people not working well together can lead to a dangerous situation." The Children’s Home of Reading-Acute Partial Hospitalization Program helped shape my perspective of professionalism thru constant reestablishments of what to expect when in an alternative hospitalization or residential treatment program. I was able to learn that the children who attend these types of facilities required much more attention. They also, require the redirection of skills that have never been taught to them before. At my internship site, an issue that is related to professionalism is that sometimes some staff members will have the intern complete miscellaneous task that has nothing to do with what they are primarily there for. Granted it makes the intern appreciate and learn that even the most miscellaneous task can be a good learning

They must be able to be honest and responsible enough to put their patient 's best interest as a top priority. When I started working at the Hunt Regional Medical Center I took a HIPPA regulation class and took it very seriously. I was very careful not to share any information about any patient that I might have seen during my volunteer work or shadowing.
What is your perception on professional boundaries? Professional boundaries are guidelines that help to keep a nurse and patient’s relationship professional. Professional boundaries help to keep the nurses focused on patient care and the patients focus on meeting their health care related goals. Give one example for each of the following and explain-

W-6 PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARIES 1. I chose this competency because as a nurse it is vital to maintain professional boundaries and still be able to provide the therapeutic care without personally getting attached to patients. 2. From the article, I learned that it is ok to be present with your patient, and caring about what they might be going through as you provide necessary care and support, but not to excessively worry about a patient in your personal life/home” (p. 407) 3.
Professionalism as Bartollas and Siegel define it “refers to a set of character strengths and personal values directed at providing the highest quality service to others in the workplace, both colleagues and clients” (2013). In the field of corrections, professionalism affects not only those working in the facility or those imprisoned within its walls, but the families of inmates and officers /correctional staff, the local community, and the relationships within the law enforcement community as well. As discussed in the text, there are several areas in which professionalism in the field of corrections must address to effectively maintain if’s facilities. While there have been significant gains in recent years, there are still areas which continue
“Professional ethics encompass the personal, and corporate standards of behavior expected by professionals”. Though this may seem like common sense this ethic isn’t always that easy. Yes, you may have a “Professional” job but how you act also reflects on that. One thing I have had to learn while working in the medical field is to put aside all personal feelins and to stay professional while dealing with the situation.

When looking at the function of professional nursing, the attitude, experiences, as well as factors such as demographics, social class, education, and values, can determine how the nurse will view violence in the workplace. These factors that have contributed to the development of the professional nurse can also determine how the nurse views and even reacts to workplace violence and aggression towards them. The qualities of the professional nurse and their background can determine how the human behavior from the patient is viewed and can lead to de-escalation or escalation of violent situations. The behavior of the patient can include cooperation, calmness, anxiety, aggression, or anger. Behaviors of aggression, anger, frustration, and acts of intimidation when patients are experiencing an illness can exacerbate stressful situations which can turn violent.

Although there are many qualities that one could possess that are equally important in displaying professionalism, there are two qualities that I believe a student must have in order to display professionalism, those two qualities are accountability and altruism. One major component that I believe a student should possess to exude professionalism is accountability. Accountability is being able to assume responsibility for any and all actions.
