At the head of this period of political development was the Progressive movement. The progressive movement guided political change in the united states of America from 1890-1920 by fostering the two most significant factors behind political change: giving minorities a voice and prioritizing “the people” and their power in government. The Progressive movement swept across the country and empowered two very important groups of people who were ready for a voice in government: women and people of color. Before the Progressive movement, child labor conditions were terrible and child crime rates were soaring. The Progressive movement, notably through the women, fought to end child labor and succeeded in getting new policies passed to protect children in the workplace. The Progressive movement also called attention to the issue of child crime rates. Source 3, a Harvard Law review on “The Juvenile Court”, comes to the defense of juvenile delinquents and argues for reforming over punishment, and focusing on turning them into worthy citizens rather than criminals. This led to changes taking place in the way juveniles were dealt with by the government. The way crime was dealt with in total evolved through the Progressive movement. IN source 6, an annual report for the Detroit police department documents the allotting of government resources such as the police to reflect the people’s needs. Through the use of science being introduced to the police force, systems to increase the efficiency of public safety were being developed. Teddy Roosevelt and the Progressives paved the way for future political activism. In the early 20th century the Progressive movement captured many people because of its benevolent nature. This ideal led to an emphasis on increased government regulation and control, and it transitioned into an almost depression era necessity. This movement is now characterized by President Obama and modern day liberals, who once again emphasize the importance of a strong centralized government on the pretense of benevolence. Although Progressivism is characterized by the urge to help better society, it is often translated into big government and sometimes unneeded regulation.
The Progressive movement was a social and political movement that began in the late 1800s and lasted through the early 1900s. Before the Progressive Era, the Industrial Revolution had occurred, creating many new problems for the average person. Because of industrialization, people had started to leave their rural farmlands and move to the newly industrialized cities in hope of finding jobs. Because of lax regulations on growing businesses, monopolies were created the took advantage of their employees. Theodore Roosevelt was one of the leaders of the Progressive movement, focusing on dismantling these monopolies.

With the expansion of urbanization and industrialization, there were more job opportunities for Americans. The government got involved more by giving Americans opportunities and jobs.
Rose Hernandez Professor Flowers History 106 15 October 2015 The Progressive Era In the 1920s, America entered a new movement that dealt with finding solutions to society’s problems. Fair wages for the working class, better living standards for the working and poor, and rights for women were hot button issues that Progressives tried to fix. During that time, books such as Bellamy’s Looking Backward and Riis’s How the Other Half Lives exposed what they considered was the main problem that caused America’s social problems. Both authors wanted to shed light on what they have witnessed and give out solutions to repair the damage society suffered from.

During the 1920s women revolutionized a brand new kind of freedom for themselves unlike any other era in history. The strict social constructs of times past were now completely overlooked and rewritten. During the progressive era, women demanded to be seen as full citizens and to have equal responsibilities as men. These series of epic changes all started during World War I, when many men went overseas. This left women to take on the responsibilities left behind by men, and gain a new feeling of freedom from the rigid social structure that required women to be caretakers of the home.

Corporate greedy and corrupt politicians were specific problems and injustices that were present in American life during the late 1800s and early 1900s however these were addressed during the progressive era with laws and regulations. Throughout the gilded era corrupt politicians and corporate greedy allowed the upper class and businessmen to take advantage of the working class. This means that a majority of the population were hurt during the gilded age whereas a small percentage benefitted. As seen in document 1, living conditions were crowded, dirty, and unsafe.
In the period between 1900 and 1920, the federal government and reformers were very successful in bringing social, economic, and political reform to the federal government. While not every aspect of it was successful, the rights of women, fighting against child labor and limiting the control of trusts and monopolies were three distinct successes of that time. Even before the progressive era, women challenged their place and articulated new visions of social, political and economic equality. The progressive era was a turning point for women as organizations evolved fighting for equal rights. Woman began to become very involved in a variety of reform movements.
