Prometheus, a titan who brought fire to man, is alluded to hundreds of years later through Frankenstein, a scientist who brought a corpse back to life. With Prometheus being explored in the works of Hesiod and Aeschylus, and Frankenstein illustrated in Mary Shelley’s work- both ultimately illustrate how going beyond the norm threatens culture, balance and authority. In other words, the process of crossing the threshold is critical to an individual being extraordinary, though their contributions may initially be viewed as negative and unwanted. To begin, Prometheus’ representation in Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound is one of a righteous individual, defying Zeus, something no other god would do. The play starts with Hephaestus defining Prometheus’ punishment from Zeus, where a commentary on Prometheus’ character is made. After describing the grueling punishment Prometheus is to receive, Hephaestus states “Such is the reward you reap of your man-loving disposition. For you, a God, feared not the anger of the Gods, but gave honors to mortals beyond what was just.” (Prometheus Bound, lines 28-30) Hephaestus’ statement not only makes a commentary on Prometheus’ loyalty to humankind, but she also notably highlights Prometheus’ steadfast righteousness as he fares against even the most powerful god, Zeus.

Throughout Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, a great comparison is shown between Victor Frankenstein, the main character, and Prometheus, one of Greek mythology’s greatest Gods. Based on historical context and parallels that have already been established with the story of Prometheus the Greek God, certain factual insights can aid in the establishment of very reasonable and concrete predictions. It is through these insights that one may deduce the likelihood of another season of illness for Frankenstein that may potentially continue to reoccur. We will learn about the many lessons that can be taken and applied to the 21st -century world, which will help us as global citizens to know our responsibilities for others. The lessons we can take and apply to this 21st-century world are that knowledge comes with risks and we should understand and know the downfall that comes with science.

Victor Frankenstein, who is the ‘Modern Prometheus’ in Mary Shelley’s novel, attempt to do the impossible – create life! While the Greek Prometheus (a titan), commits three sins against Zeus, one of them being the giving of fire to humans. Both are in their own way absurd, however in both cases, they succeed. However both are subjected to either pain or suffering, whether it is physical or mental, after realizing what they have done.
