I. Introduction The Constitution's second amendment says, "A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed" (Madison, 1971, para. 2). The second amendment was written as a part of the Bill of Rights and gave the citizens the right to bear arms and form militias to maintain a free state. However, since its adoption, the interpretation of the Second Amendment has been a topic of debate and controversy. Some people argue that the Second Amendment assures a person's right to own firearms for personal protection. In contrast, others believe it only protects the right to bear arms about a well-regulated militia. Nevertheless, the explanation is clear …show more content…
Multiple gun ownership by an individual has led to increased gun violence and mass shootings. This can be seen in cases where individuals with a history of mental illness or criminal record can obtain multiple firearms, leading to tragic consequences. The pew research center reported that about 66 percent of gun owners in the U.S. own multiple firearms, with few people owning as many as ten or more guns (Parker et al., 2017). This has raised distress about the potential for these individuals to use their excessive collection of firearms for violent and criminal purposes. For instance, the mass shootings that have occurred in recent years have often been conducted by individuals who own multiple firearms. During his shooting spree, the Virginia Beach Municipal Complex shooter DeWayne Craddock had used two .45 caliber handguns and a silencer that killed twelve people at a municipal complex in Virginia Beach (Vigor, 2021). In the discovery of The Bureau's Behavioral Analysis Unit (2021), Craddock felt isolated from his co-workers over how they perceived him and his own perception of his work fulfillment. As a result, the shooter settled with violence as a rational reason to resolve the …show more content…
The use of guns as assault weapons has become a disturbing trend in recent years. Assault weapons are designed to be used for military or law enforcement purposes, but civilians are obtaining them for private use. However, they are using them for violent and criminal purposes. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (2019), 36.4 percent of robberies involved firearms, and a portion of those crimes featured the use of assault weapons. Road rage incidents have also become increasingly violent, often involving the use of firearms as assault weapons. As of 2021, 62 percent of road rage incidents resulted in injury or death (Sharps & Bistline, 2022. p. 2). This misused guns as assault weapons goes against the intended purpose of the second amendment, which was to allow citizens to defend themselves and their
The second amendment of the Bill of Rights stipulates that the United States shall have a well-regulated militia. Reasoning for this is that as a free state, a well-regulated militia is necessary for the security amongst the citizens. The second amendment also provides that the people have the right to keep and bear arms. It is expressly specified that the latter right shall not be infringed.
The second amendment states that “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (1 GOVT 6., Sidlow/Henschen). Often because of the social and political demands for gun control, the second amendment seems to consistently conjure claims of personal violation of rights, whether in agreement or disagreement of gun
Constitution, the Second Amendment, ratified in 1791, has been the most publicly contentious of late. With the spate of mass shooting tragedies that made headlines in the past year, the meaning and intentions of the Second Amendment is once again being openly debated. As Voice of America reports, the framers of the Constitution wanted to ensure the protected basic rights, including the right to bear arms, that they enjoyed as Englishmen. In fact, English laws even required that men practice using their firearms should they ever be called to defend the nation

The Second Amendment has had an impact on Americans since it’s creation. To this day we still exercise this right
The Second Amendment, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." –James Madison, The Second Amendment. The founders of our country as well as our constitution believed that without weapons in the form of firearms, there is no freedom from the harsh rulings of a corrupt government. These founders had just been freed from the duty of war from a corrupt and harsh government, without their weapons or the weapons of the people; this country would not be where it is today.
It is interesting to note that today’s ardent gun advocates purposely ignore the first part of this amendment (A well regulated militia being necessary for to the security of a free State) and only quote the second part (…the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed). They know that the militia idea is unappealing in a civilized society and that this amendment as it is written 200 years ago does not make sense
The debate on the Second Amendment, and many cases have been reviewed by the Supreme Court to determine what exactly it means. The Second Amendment states “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The debate is over what the Second Amendment means when it says “the right of the people to keep and bear arms”. Those in favor of gun control believe that putting more restrictions on guns will make America safer and reduce the number of deaths in our country.

It allows for a well-regulated militia as a necessity to security of a free state without limiting the right of the people to own guns (Lithwick). Daniel J. Schultz interprets the intended meaning of this amendment based the terms used in the amendment. Schultz notes that the term “well-regulated” as used in the second amendment brings some misunderstanding.

Every year, Americans are shocked by numerous mass shootings and senseless acts of violence involving guns and weapons. And, every year around 100,000 people are shot among which 18,000 are children and teens (Lane, 131).
