Do you think the name Redskins has a positive or negative impact? The Washington Redskins has had its football team name for 81 years. There’s a disagreement going on with the name because people say that this name is very racist towards Native Americans. Native Americans are rarely recognized these days but since they have been aligned with the NFL, there are many schools, groups, and organizations named after this team. Washington Redskins fans, including many Native Americans are okay with the football team name “Redskins”. This name is supposed to honor Native Americans not offend them. . At the stadium there are plenty of Native American’s attending the games. At every game they sing the Washington Redskins Fight song. In that song it says Hail to the Redskins, “Hail.” That word alone could put an end to this entire argument. “The use of “Hail” as part of the popular fight song is a sign of respect to the Native Americans, players, mascot, and the franchise. Most of the people who think this name change should happen aren’t even Native Americans. Polls show that 90% of Native Americans are unbothered by the name."The Washington Redskins name has thus from its origin represented a positive meaning distinct from any disparagement that could be viewed in some other context," Mr. Goodell wrote June 5(Roger Goodell). The Redskins name is supposed to represent a positive meaning not any type of racism towards the Native Americans. Washington Redskins fans, including many Native Americans, are against the name change. First the majority of American Indians aren’t offended so it's not like the Redskins have the whole world against them and there are also some American Indians who do feel offended. Since this debate has like a 50/50 outcome the Washington Redskins National Football team will always be debatable. The Washington Redskins has received some consequences for being stubborn about the name change and not changing it. The U.S. patent office has cancelled the Redskins trademark. The trademark protects the particular name of the product to avoid confusion.Personally, I do not think that the football team Redskins should change their name because most Native Americans are not offended by the name and the Redskins sacrificing their name will not make a big difference. Changing the name won't do anything to help the Native American community. Changing the name of the Redskins will only please the politically correct anti-democracy fighters who want to take away your freedom and my freedom. “Redskin” was first used by Native Americans in the 18th century to recognize themselves from the white or any others approaching on their lands and culture. Only 9 percent of those polls said the name of the NFL team is “offensive”, while 90 percent of Native Americans said it's acceptable, according to the University of Pennsylvania’s National Annenberg Election Survey, released Friday. It wouldn't make sense to change a name that has existed for 81
Not supporting a disrespectful team, is what the Cleveland Indians organization needs to see from people from all over. Maybe if people inside of the management of the team would just remove this offensive logo, no problems would be seen. We could all enter back into the stadiums, and finally continue to support the Cleveland Indians. With a small group of people who protest against the Chief Wahoo logo, it is crazy that the Indians haven’t removed the logo from the uniforms. Although a large majority of people sees no problem with the logo, it truly makes no sense why the logo is still present on the uniforms of the Cleveland
A lot of great ideas for TEam names and logos even uniforms were in the 1960s and still kept to this day, like with helmets, name ,logo and
The author uses a personal anecdote to begin his argument: he “bought the Cleveland cap with the famous Chief Wahoo Logo on it” (520), which betrayed his Creek mother’s faith; as a result, his mother jerked the cap off his head and “threw it in the trash” (520), which left an indelible impression on him. Shakely’s personal experience is efficient to draw a vivid picture about “Indian Mascot” abuse for audiences. Based on his experience, he believes that possessing dignity and respect is the right to everybody, and it doesn’t apply to majority rules. Therefore, Shakely claims that college and professional teams should abandon Native American names and mascots because it is racial
This can avoid costs. In Texas, for example, they could rename schools named after Robert E. Lee after golfer Lee Trevino. (Holland-Paragraph 22)The quote which I cited from the text helps to support my reason is because by changing the meaning of the school name, that at the same time changes the background and values that the alumni stand for. Though renaming may change the meaning and background of the school, the values that Alumni stand for may consist of Confederate values in support of the Confederacy which is also much less expensive. The thought of whether or not the Alumni may hold Confederate values can really only be determined by whether or not they were taught Confederate Ideology which is extremely unlikely plus trying to change the name would take a very long time to do for a cause which’ll remove important parts of
The Owner Daniel Snyder has vowed to never change the name and insists that it pays respect and honors Native Americans. Many supports state that the reference to Native Americans is a compliment attributing to their reputations as “tough warriors.” The fans even have a trademark song that they have chanted for decades, “Hail to the Redskins” (“Monday”). How can that be perceived as something
"The team and its leaders are so obsessed with clinging to a dictionary-defined racial slur that they are willing to abandon their hometown and local fans in order to continue degrading Native Americans," said Joel Barkin, spokesman for the grassroots campaign. "Now that Bruce Allen has been relieved of day-to-day responsibilities as general manager he must have a lot of free time on his hands to double down on this racist moniker and try to figure out what to do about Native Americans returning donations from the team. Unfortunately, Bruce Allen, team owner Dan Snyder and the Washington team fail to understand that you cannot buy acceptance of continued racism. The Washington Redskins football team through the years has been put under increasing pressure to change its name in order to stop causing offense to Native
A controversial topic currently circulating throughout the media and society, is professional athletes kneeling during the National Anthem. In my opinion, this is a completely useless, unnecessary action done just for attention. The theory behind the action is supposed to represent unity. Unity is not achieved by causing controversy, but it’s achieved by coming together and supporting each other when times get tough.
Because a Buffalo is considered strong , dominant and they have big muscles. But the real reason why the team is called the Buffalo Bills is because of an important american figure called William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody. During the American Civil war he served the union in 1863 to 1865 and received a Medal of Honor 1872.He is a man who achieved great thing just like not only was he in the military he was a good horse rider. But what gave him his name Buffalo Bill was because when he used to work in the Kansas Pacific Railroad he supplied the meat, he killed over 4,282 american bisons (known as buffalo) in eighteen months. The point of this is too show that even the name of the team comes from the ideal man in our gender-coded society.
Recently, the use of controversial words has become a heavily debated topic and has gained international attention as seemingly truthful statements to some, cause insult to others. The Times article "Why 'Redskins' Is a Bad Word", by acclaimed linguist and professor John McWhortor, was published around the time the use of the word Redskin was being debated. In the article, McWhortor aims to clarify the condemnation of the word Redskin, by suggesting that the offence does not stem from the literal definition of such words, but instead the negative and often derogatory connotations the words have. McWhorter begins by introducing the recent discussions surrounding the use of the word Redskins, especially the actions taken by Californian schools
On September 26th 2014, Derek Jeter took his final swing at the most prestigious Yankees Stadium in front of thousands and millions of baseball fans and ended up winning his final home game. The crowd went ballistic over the RBI and chanted “Derek Jeter” while raising signs that read “Salute to the Captain”. At that very moment, people viewed Derek Jeter not for what race he fell under or for what kind of person he was or for the ladies he slept with, but the athlete who electrified the diamond every time he stepped on it. Roberta Newman wrote an article on (Branding Derek Jeter, Redefining Race) companies such as Movado and Avon on how they showcase Derek Jeter “as neither black nor white and so can relate to everyone” (Newman) as a turning
Also, if any professional sport teams were forced to change their names, it would have a huge negative impact on commercial products. Lingebach addresses in his article how “in another sign of support, the majority of Washington, DC fans would not purchase new team merchandise if the Redskins changed their name” (qtd. in Lingebach 2). If Native Americans and most of the National Football League fans infer that the name is not derogatory, the Redskins should not have to change their name. The Kansas City Chiefs have been lucky enough not to face the same issues as the Washington
There are many sports team names and mascots whose names reference Native Americans; this has become a public controversy due to the sports team names being interpreted as a racially offensive pursue. Most people do not take into consideration that these teams have an important meaning behind them, and how they contribute to the insightful history of Native Americans themselves. It would be a catastrophe having to lose all the history. Many claims toward this idea of "racism" are due to NFL and college team names such as the Washington Redskins, Kansas City Chiefs, and the Florida State Seminoles are just a few.
We must learn from the mistakes we have made not only in this incident, but past ones as well. Racial slurs should be something from the past and not in our present or future. The Washington Redskins is a football team who have carried that name

Couple teams that carry names that are very offensive to the natives are the Atlanta Braves, Chicago Blackhawks, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Chiefs, and arguably the most popular of them all, the Washington Redskins. These teams carrying such names bring offense to all the native
