Psychology is important when it comes to understanding the people around us. It can tell us a lot about the subject at hand, such as personality, perspective, choices, values, motivation, and, overall, the lifestyle of an individual. Psychology, in short, is the study of the brain and its development and functionality and how it affects/defines us as people. It can also be used to influence the subject, such as Pavlovian conditioning, which is the modification of predisposed behavior of a person or animal, and the effects can be permanent. These differences, depending on how radical and specific the conditioning, can drastically change a person or people, as evident in the novel. The approach of psychology is taken because the aspects of psychology are very visible and easily identifiable, sometimes even explicitly stated. The aspect and practices of Pavlov are major players in understanding the novel. Also a key player is Sigmund Freud and his ideas. Freud termed the Id, which is basically immediate gratification and includes strong sexual desires and satisfaction. The dystopian society presented in the novel is founded and revolved around the ideas and practices of these two individuals, as …show more content…
Consumerism leads to a loss of humanity. This is revealed in the satirical take on the society we know and live within. Most of want only the newest of the new and this, as Mustapha Mond, the Controller of the World State, said, creates a “loss of intrinsic value of old high-art.” We see the newest products as better and the old things as less valuable, even though the older might be better in more ways than we would think. This theme is also revealed through the setting and it’s components, mainly the people. They only find pleasure in the newest technologies, thus they are forever enraptured in what the Controller deems new because developments and innovations are always taking
Worlds in fictional books have always had an ever-changing style. A society has a big effect on the personality of a character. There are two main types of society’s in a fictional book, a utopian and a dystopian society. A Utopian society is one that is jubilant whereas dystopian society is doleful and cheerless. The qualities of a dystopian society are in the books, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and Anthem by Ayn Rand.
A dystopian society is an illusion of a perfect world but individuals aren’t allowed freedom, and are under constant surveillance. In George Orwell’s book 1984, the protagonist Winston lives in a society where they were under Big Brothers control and were watched by the thought police. In the short story Harrison Bergeron, written by Kurt Vonnegut, the society lived by equality using handicaps to regulate the above-average people. Dystopian literature – whether novel, short story or film – focuses on similar characteristics and themes.
Follow Yourself “We think that there are many mysteries in the sky and under the water and in the plants which grow.” (Rand 23). The societies of whom George and Hazel as well as Equality are apart of a collective society where nobody can be different, but in a typical society people are allowed to be smart. Although “ Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut Jr and Anthem by Ayn Rand are both pieces of dystopian literature, their portreyal of family differs greatly. “George and Hazel were watching televison.
Dystopian literature is a insubstantial universe that under totalitarian control. The main goal of a dystopian society is to make everything the same in the worst case scenarios. The two novels "1984” and “Harrison Bergeron" and the movie "The Purge2" all relates and compare to the dystopian literature by citizens being controlled by government or some type of dictatorship. Society in the dystopian movie and two novels have plenty of the same similar and different characteristics, controls, and protagonist.
The two dystopian traits that were displayed
When authors create a dystopian society, they often try to predict the future and maybe even include a few similarities that relate to present day society. Ray Bradbury created a life in the future similar to today but without the pleasure of having books. Kurt Vonnegut created a world where everyone is equal to no restraint. Finally, Veronica Roth shined light on a future where people must choose their own path where they will be stuck forever. Technology in Fahrenheit 451, government in “2081”, and equality in the novel Four, are all examples of dystopian life the varies from modern day society.
Through the use of speculative narratives and themes of dystopia, some socialists and authors of the time tried to
Dystopia is a popular genre in which authors write about a fictional society that is perceived to be perfect and ideal by the vast majority of the people in it. Authors must intrigue the reader, and this is difficult because they have to somehow illustrate a future that is vaguely similar to ours. However, it has to be completely fictional, which makes it tough to formulate realistic storylines. Nevertheless, these authors use literary elements to counter these difficulties and produce realistic characters and you can see this when Ray Bradbury, Ayn Rand, and James Dashner use symbolism in their respected novels, Fahrenheit 451, Anthem, and The Maze Runner. This literary technique gives Dystopian Literature the uniqueness and adds the key elements to make the story flow.
The society in this book is basically the epitome of a dystopia. It has a totalitarian government and everything about the world the people live in is a frightening nightmare. The government has completely dehumanized the way people live their lives. People in this dystopia aren’t even actually human any more. They aren’t even born the natural way through reproduction, they are created.
Before diving into a psychological analysis, Freudian methods must be explained. Freudian Psychology is defined as “Psychology relating to or influenced by Sigmund Freud and his methods of psychoanalysis, especially with reference to the importance of sexuality in human behavior” (PsychologyToday.com). This definition, in simpler terms, means that it is the study of the sexual motives behind a person’s actions. Abigail Williams is
Entertainment Controls Them All Huxley has a theory of entertainment as control and we can see it throughout his book Brave New World. The fact that his vision was made years ago, makes this vision even more interesting, because knowing that entertainment has a big impact into our society for the book reveals similar forms of entertainment to control it’s people. The ways that the book was created has brought to conclusion that our society is controlled by entertainment. Our society has become a trivial culture preoccupied with entertainment.
Despite the large gap in time between their publishing, they share many obvious similarities in their interpretation of futuristic dystopian societies. However, the subtle similarities of the use of children and hope to control population is

Literature is a magical thing, now-a-days you can write about anything and put it out for people to read. A classic is Lord of The Flies by William Golding. This novel has many examples of how authors use Psychology in books such as Id, Ego, and Superego and how they can relate to certain characters, and how Id being Jack in the story, and Ralph is the the ego while Piggy is the superego. There are many, many ways to show the things they do to emphasize it is this novel.
Psychology is defined as “the scientific study of the mind and behavior” (Introduction to Psychology, 2015). Psychology provides an overview of biology and behavior, sensation and perception, learning, memory, intelligence, language, motivation, emotion, abnormal psychology, and therapy (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 1). Because psychology allows for a better understanding of how the mind and body work, this knowledge can be beneficial for any field of study or career. The theoretical and practical understanding of the basics of psychology can help with decision-making, critical thinking, stress management, time management, better understanding of others, improving communication, and even achieving goals and objectives, all components that allow someone to be more successful throughout their life. Throughout this course I hope to gain a greater understanding of historical and theoretical perspectives of human behavior and development (PSY 102 Course Syllabus, 2018, pg 2).
