Jeff Shaara’s Gods and Generals is written based on the events and people from 1858 through 1863 during the American Civil War. Although this novel was a piece of historical fiction, it is one of the most accurate recordings of history. Gods and Generals drew the reader in through the engrossing stories of Robert Edward Lee, Winfield Scott Hancock, Thomas Jonathan Jackson, and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Before reading the novel, readers most likely thought of these men as heroes and men who were capable of anything. However, after completing Gods and Generals an individual could feel more connected with the characters because of the personal stories they portrayed throughout the novel. This piece of historical fiction was not meant to be another repetitive documentation of an historical event or even a plain biography. Instead, Gods and Generals was obviously telling the history of the Civil War through the stories and personal experiences of the …show more content…
I didn’t realize how accurate and interesting a historical piece of fiction could be. I was attached to the novel until I finally finished it. I believe I was so engrossed in this novel because it showed the emotional and more human sides of the generals who lead the American Civil War. I have read plenty of biographies and historical documentations about the men and events, but it was never so detailed and personal. The purpose of God and Generals was to provide the story of the battles by telling the emotional stories of the men who fought in it. Jeff Shaara did a outstanding job of portraying the generals’ thoughts and feelings. It was so well written that I felt more connected to the characters and understood them more because I read about the events of the Civil War through their point of view. I would definitely recommend this book to a friend, especially if they want a glimpse of the American Civil War and its heroic
It was a very well written and interesting book in my opinion. I believe almost anyone would be able to sit down and read it even if they do not truly enjoy history. For someone who enjoys history, it would be extremely enjoyable to them. This book included many true events and people such as Robert E. Lee the real commander of the Confederate army. Also, the battles that were included as a part of this book were all true battles that had took place during the early 1860s.
1.) The author of this letter was A.G. Argenbright and he wrote this letter in 1861. He writes about a doctor appointment that he had. His audience is a Captain.
Holly Corbin Mr. Gorman Civil War 10 October 2014 Synopsis of Gods and Generals Jeff Shaara’s Gods and Generals follows four of the most influential officers of the Civil War: General Robert E. I chose the book Black Hearts by Jim Frederick because it was recommended to me by First Lieutenant Smaldone. He had to read it as course material during his training at TBS (The Basic School). Officers go to TBS following Officer Candidate School where newly commissioned officers learn to lead and inspire fellow Marines. Black Hearts is a non-fiction story about the 502nd Infantry Regiment’s deployment to a region south of Baghdad, Iraq and it’s breakdown of leadership, morale, and discipline. The Unit was known as “The Black Heart Brigade.”
While he writes about the events after they happened, his experience and detail involved in the book make up that. This book provides a greater understanding of the civil war from a side that is not usually written about. Overall, understanding of the civil war is expanded after reading this book. So it stands not just as a good source for information but also a primary source because of the author’s perspective. The confederate side of the story is silenced often because they lost.
The story Killer Angels provides an in-depth perspective of both Confederate and Union soldiers during the Civil War. The author, Michael Shaara, accomplishes a special feat due to the fact that throughout the novel he rarely breaks away from the factual aspects of America's bloodiest war. The Civil War had seemingly various causes despite numerous soldiers and outsiders believing it was entirely about slavery. The Union and Confederates weren't just fighting over the rights and ideas of slavery, they were fighting for much more. It was a power struggle.
Movies and Hollywood have captivated our ideas of history whether it being movies such as 300 or my current topic Glory. Movies have profound impact on our historical perception and even though these movies try to stay accurate they still present major inaccuracy. Now in this paper I will be reviewing and detailing the historical validity of the 1989 Civil War blockbuster Glory, the movie is centered on the Massachusetts 54th regiment that was predominately made up of African American free men and their commander Robert Gould Shaw, who was the son of a prominent Abolitionist family in Boston. Shaw was originally was apart of the 7th New York who had aided in the defense of Washington and later join and rise up the ranks in the 2nd Massachusetts.
The United States Civil War is possible one of the most meaningful, bloodstained and controversial war fought in American history. Northern Americans against Southern Americans fought against one another for a variety of motives. These motives aroused from a wide range of ideologies that stirred around the states. In James M. McPherson’s What they fought for: 1861-1865, he analyzes the Union and Confederate soldier’s morale and ideological components through the letters they wrote to love ones while at war. While, John WhiteClay Chambers and G. Kurt Piehler depict Civil War soldiers through their letters detailing the agonizing battles of war in Major Problems in American Military History.
Robert Gould Shaw was an officer in the Federal Army during the civil war, who leads the US Civil War’s first all-black volunteer company, known as the Massachusetts “Fighting” Fifty-fourth, fighting prejudices of both his own Union army and the Confederates. The black volunteer company filled with band of ex slaves, servants and other volunteers face the adversity of a racist Union Army, having troubles to prove themselves worthy of their government issued
Over all the book is more than just a collection of the diary and letters mashed together into a book, the author talks about what is going on at the time McClellan is writing his letters before showing them to us, he also helps the reader a lot with footnotes of places, people and events throughput the redaction, also citing his own research within the book, it is easy to read since they are letters and a diary, they were more of a narrative than a regular history book which made it more interesting. The author mainly uses primary sources such as letters, something I found interesting was that the author also picked letters addressed to him. I felt like the author did a great job and made the book really easy to follow, but I felt like the book lacked that attention grasp, it was smooth read and in all honestly not hard, but I always look for a book that grasps my attention for a long time span. When reading this book, even thought the footnotes where at the end of each letter or diary entry it was tedious having to turn the page when I did not know about a concept.
It helps the reader truly understand the events leading to the war, the results from the war, and what the soldiers went through both during and after the war. Most of the information presented in Adams book is not normally presented in History classes and helps the reader broaden their knowledge on the topic. The book is also well organized. Adams presents his information in order. He starts off talking about the myths of the war, then goes to the events leading to the war, the talks about the war and what the soldiers went through, and then finishes the book with the results of the war.
"The Plunkitt of Tammany Hall" written by William L. Riordon about George W. Plunkitt's multiple talks in defense of his career in the political machine Tammany Hall. George W. Plunkitt was a ward boss of the Tammany Hall Political machine. It was full of corruption which made George W. Plunkitt wealthy. Before people knew about Tammany Hall being corrupt, George W. Plunkitt tried to defend Tammany Hall throughout his political career in order to keep making a lot of money. Some of George W. Plunkitt's talks were on his honest graft against dishonest graft, Civil Service reforms, Tammany Hall being patriotic, and how successful politicians do not drink.
I would recommend this book to someone who is into history and Abraham Lincoln. Growing up I used to think Abraham Lincoln was cool and inspiring. This book has helped me realize who Lincoln was. This book is really good at going into details from every aspect of Lincoln 's life. This book starts from the very beginning to the the very end of Lincoln.
