CONCEPT 9 PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL
This context is taken from module 8:3 entitled PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL
Performance evaluation or performance appraisal or staff appraisal is said to be one of the most effective instrument in the hands of management for effective personnel management and in enhancing organisational performance. It is the systematic and periodic and impartial assessment of employee abilities in his present job and his potential for better job.
It is a system adopted by employers in evaluating the level of achievement or performance task assigned to offices. It has a blend of input every day, every week, every month until the year runs out.
It is done to achieve assessment of past performance of employee.
Identify and assess performance training and development needs.
Identify and assess future potential and or
The desired outcome is to provide feedback to employees and facilitate personnel decisions such as promotions, compensations, and longevity of the employee. A rater system of 1-5 will be given to both the employee and the supervisor to be graded individually and then discussed together as a starting point of what is working well and what possible changes should be made. The goal of the performance evaluations is to support staff development and continuous learning, align compensation desired outcomes, improve staff performance, and most importantly, strengthen management
Nurses play an essential role in the healthcare industry. The nurse workforce is made up of licensed nurses: registered nurses (RNs), licensed vocational nurses (LVNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs), along with nurse aides. Registered nurses are responsible for assessments of patients’ needs, development of care plans, medication administration, and treatments, while licensed vocational nurses perform specific care under the delegation of the registered nurses and supervisions. Nursing aides perform activities of daily living (unskilled attention) to the patient. Adequate nursing staffing is essential to both patient care and outcomes, also to the retention of nurses while inadequate staffing creates problems for both the patients and

QSEN Competencies allow nurses to improve the safety and quality of existing healthcare institutions by continually understanding the KSAs – knowledge, skills, and attitudes. These competencies include patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice (EBP), quality improvement (QI), safety, and informatics. The following paper discusses the above competencies and evaluates how systems thinking affects the quality and safety of the regulators and accreditors. According to Case Western Reserve University (n.d.), nurses should integrate patient-centered care values by communicating sensibly and respectfully while addressing patients' needs to other staff members.
In the leadership in care delivery course, we were assigned to a hospital to perform clinical hours and provide care to four patients. Additionally, the purpose of this paper is to explain and provide examples on how our patient care included the concepts of Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) competencies, delegation, handoff reporting, and a reflection of the clinical experience. Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) Competencies QSEN consists of six competencies: patient centered care, quality improvement, teamwork and collaboration, safety, informatics, and evidence based practice. To provide patient-centered care, I had to educate the patient when administering medications on why the patient was taking the medication and side effects. Care had to be individualized with each patient and it included providing respect with his or her decisions in their care.
Nursing Shortage is a problem we all should be aware of. There are many factors that may lead to a nursing shortage, such as having stressful and unsafe working environments, and our nurses are being overworked. This is a problem we should be aware of because it is affecting the patient care. Nurses would not have enough time to stay with a patient if they have more patients to worry about. Nurses play a big role in our hospitals and communities, “Nurses play significant roles in hospitals, clinics and private practices.
“More highly educated nursing workforce is critical to meeting the nation’s nursing needs and delivering safe, effective patient care….. Without a more educated nursing workforce, the nation’s health will be further at risk (Tri-council for Nursing, 2010).” As the acuity of the patient increases daily, so is the need for increases of higher education for nurses. The factor of increasing complexity of patient health require higher education for the liability of safe practice, thus is an agreeable requirement for employers to place upon the employees. Acquiring a bachelor’s degree is only an improvement for everyone.
9. PROFESSIONAL AUTONOMY IN NURSING Nursing has come a long way from being the hand maidens of the physician to having control over nursing knowledge and practice. It now has two essential ingredients of accountability and autonomy. There is more demand from the nurses now than in the past when all they were expected to do was just to provide comfort and care.
PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL Performance appraisal is the process of assessing the performance and progress of an employee or a group of employees on a given job and his potential for future development. It consists of all formal procedures used in working organization to evaluate personalities, contributions, and potentials of employees Since organisation exist to achieve goals, the degree of success that individual employees have in reaching their individuals goals is important in determining organizational effectiveness. The assessment of how successful employees have been at meeting their individual goals, therefore, becomes a critical part of HRM. This leads us to the topic of performance appraisal. PURPOSE
Nurses (both Licensed Vocational Nurses and Registered Nurses) make up the largest part of the health care, and have greater opportunities practicing in different disciplines and departments. In Black’s Professional Nursing, he states, “the profession of nursing is more than ever requiring the education of well-trained, flexible, and knowledgeable nurses who can practice in today’s evolving health care environment.” (Black, 2017, p.1). There are different reasons that influenced my decision of seeking a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). Flash back to when I relocated to United States in 2011, my goal was getting into a pre-pharmacy program, then get into a pharmacy school.
• Assessment: Nurses often feel uninformed when changes are made. Not being made aware of important changes can affect patient care. • Nursing Diagnosis: Communication breakdown due to ineffective delivery of new changes related to patient care. • Goal setting: Implement an education book that is placed near the nurse 's station and nurses are responsible to read the changes and sign off when they have read it. • Evaluation: Nurses are better informed and are up to date with new

The system needs to be productive or it will be a waste of money and time, this makes a virtual as a potential to refine employee’s performance. The performance appraisal will lead to a behavioral change when an individual accepts the system (A. Elverfeldt, 2005). The system used in performance appraisal has the roots and become more powerful in almost all the organization through the world. These are the assessment of the performance of an employee or employer, whom one is concern about (D. Goel, 2010). According to E. Lawler, G. Benson and M McDermott, 2012 performance appraisal is a censure powe of management practices, criticism ranging from an extensive waste of time to their having a negative impact on the correlation between managers and their subordinates.
The quarterly performance annual review collects performance information using a four-point rating scale that measures the progress of each goal. Performance information is also gathered from the self-assessment form. Employees rate themselves on their strengths and improvement of weaknesses, work relationships, and career interests (“Performance Management,” n.d.). The appraisal forms are an appropriate method to collect the performance
