U.S. Survey Name: Nataelle Pitts Founding the New Nation Date:10/11/16 Section: UH II Constitution Convention Simulation Analysis and Synthesis 1. What was the most significant issue facing the new republic? The most pressing issue was the federal government had very little control over the new republic despite the Article of Confederation. This made it difficult for the government to solve national issues without the approval from each state. For example, prior to the constitution the government was not able to regulate high taxation for Farmers nation wide, which led to the farmer’s rebellion known as Shays rebellion. In addition to this, the weak federal government was not able to unify currency that made them very vulnerable …show more content…
Furthermore, each state had very different needs that made it very difficult to agree on a resolution that would represent all of the states. For example, in Pennsylvania slavery was not an important factor in supporting their commercial and manufacturing economy. Secondly, prominent representatives such as Benjamin Franklin did not believe in the practice; however, in other states such as Georgia, slavery was an important resource for their economy because it allowed them to produce cash crops such as tobacco without paying for labor while supporting their economy. Even though this was just one of the many resolutions that we discussed during the simulated convention, the discussion on slavery further represented the shift from powers that each individual states had to the development of the new federal government. Some states took pride in the fact that they were able to control their economy also making it hard to reach a compromise that would resolve the …show more content…
This was a pressing matter in both conventions because the decision about representation would determine the perspectives that would be represented in future legislation that would apply to the whole nation. Furthermore, the various sizes of the sates made it difficult to completely give up on their stance because it would not be represented. For example, states such as Delaware in both convention wanted equal representation while larger states such as New York wanted proportional representation because of the larger variation in opinion that comes with the larger population. Even though we did share this commonality with the actual simulation, we already knew that a plan such as the great compromise would pass where as in the convention; the delegates did not know what would be the best proposals to unify their nation successfully. Also, during the simulation we also were focused on the issues that seemed the most important to use based on modern day politics while the actual delegates mad decisions based on fear of failing just like the Articles of
The National government initiated in 1789 by the United States Constitution in it early stages faced a numerous amount of threats for a multifarious reasons. The Hartford Convention in 1814-1815 and the Whiskey Rebellion in 1794 show the variety of obstacles the government was forced to conquer. The motives differ from fear for trade, high taxes, the actions from armed rebellion to review of the constitution. A multitude of people would have liked the government to have faltered. The Constitution of the United States led to an increase in power.
The problem was that the existing government, under the Articles of Confederation wasn't doing the job. It was too weak. There overall goal was to create a strong-central government without letting anyone gaining much power. Federalism Federalism is a compound republic, meaning it is made up of two governments. It is between two distinct governments which are subdivided into separate departments.
BAby thesis!!!! Shays’ Rebellion was caused by the weakened national government. The Articles of Confederation did not have a strong national government therefore the yeoman farmers were in a lot of debt because of the post war recession. Since the yeoman farmers were unable to pay the debt the creditors took away the property the farmers owned. Shays’ Rebellion greatly alarmed politicians throughout the nation about the Articles.
The two most important problems which made the Articles of the Confederation a poor form of government stemmed from their lack of power; specifically their lack of power to collect taxes and lack of power to raise an army. These issues led to the creation of the Constitution and in turn led to more issues due to differences between Federalists and Antifederalists. To combat the new come issues, compromises were struck between the given groups within the government. These compromises were called the Great Compromise and the Three/Fifths Compromise.
Imran Hossain Christi Daylay Govt 2305 20 Sept. 2017 Various Compromise at the Constitutional Convention The Constitution Convention met and wrote the compromises, which balanced power between the federal government and state governments in 1787. Some issues were emerging at the constitution convention such as the large and small states.
The larger states wanted representation to be based on population and, the smaller states wanted it to be based on equality. Two compromises made were the Great Compromise and the Three-Fifths Compromise. James Madison was from Virginia and, he was also the Father of the Constitution. He came up with a plan known as the Virginia
Under the Articles of Confederation, the government endured successes and failures while trying to figure out the process of managing what it inherited. From the get go it lacked adequate powers to deal with interstate issues or to enforce its will on the states, and it had little stature in the eyes of the world (p. 153). Little stature because of the unpersuasiveness in keeping Great Britain to fulfilling its terms of the peace treaty and the inability to repay their debt at home and to foreign nations. The nation also faced a postwar depression, state-to-state taxation, and rioting of farmers because of increased taxes which led to Shay’s Rebellion.
Between 1786 and 1787 in the United States the Articles of Confederation were being tested by political issues. The main crisis was the Shays Rebellion led by Daniel Shays. The rebellion was a revolt against the state's taxing large amounts towards farmers causing them to foreclose. The farmers were unable to pay the high taxes and feared to lose their
It gave the country the inability to form a army, it just wasn’t one of the right of the central government under this constitution. The congress had little to no money, often they would ask individual states for money, and a lot of the times they didn’t receive as much as they asked for. It was also difficult for the people up north to create and pass a law since nine of the thirteen states have to agree upon the new law, which was very hard to get them to do. With this constitution there wasn’t even a national government which means that if a problem had come upon two states it would be settled in one there
After completing the process of the Constitutional Convention, I have learned an exceptional amount of information that can be used to take on the real world. During the convention there were many factors that impacted how the convention was run, and what choices were made. The preliminary discussion topics, the lessons learned, and the factions represented in the convention all modified the ending result. Each of the preliminary discussions with other factions prior to the convention were very important to the final decisions made. Slavery, a very important topic during the convention, was one such example that branched out into other different issues including slave trade and the abolishment of slavery.
One of the compromises made in the Constitutional Convention is the three-fifths compromise. In this compromise, the southerners wanted to add slaves to the population of the state they lived in. If slaves were included in their state’s population, that state would be able to add more representatives in the House of Representatives. Northerners did not agree with that statement because slaves did not have the right to vote. After the delegates compromised, they agreed that only three-fifths of the slave’s population would be counted into the state’s population.
As a slave state in the South, we are very well versed in the treatment and necessity a slave plays in Southern culture. However, slavery has recently taken a dip in economic prosperity due to the lifeless soil in the South. Slavery is declining and we cannot continue to support a system that is not only inhumane but also economically fighting an uphill battle. Representing one of the five delegates of the state of Delaware, it is my sole purpose to abolish slavery due to its weakness, much like the Articles of Confederation. The whole state of Delaware has actually taken the initiative to frame a constitution rooted from the immorality of slavery and the economic depression it currently faces [1].
Although the Articles of Confederation protected the power of states, it severely limited the power of the federal government. For example, the Articles of Confederation prevented the federal government from regulating imports and exports. This allowed states to disproportionately levy taxes on each other. To rectify this issue, the Constitution granted the federal government the power to regulate interstate commerce. Also, the Articles of Confederation prevented the government from raising a standing army, which allowed for events of instability, such as Shay’s Rebellion to form.
By writing a new constitution, the farmers were able to address the problems which the nation faced under the Articles of Confederation. The most important issues were addressed by the establishment of a stronger national government that was selected by the citizens. Unlike the Articles of Confederation, were each state maintain its own sovereign rule, each state was represented equally in Congress through the representatives elected by its citizen. Therefore, power was no longer placed in a single institution such as the states or one overall governing body, but rather in the hands of the people. This government had the power to tax, regulate trade and commerce, and coin a national currency with a majority vote versus a unanimous vote.
The United States confronted many problems once they gained their independence from Great Britain. One of the biggest problems was their form of government at that time, which was stated in the Articles of Confederation. This presented many problem to the states, as stated in a document about the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, some of the problems of the Articles of Confederation were the poor international trade, poor foreign relations, weak economy, and Shay’s Rebellion. The people, specifically the Federalists, wanted a new government because of the weakness of the government at that moment. According to many history books, the government also faced financial problems and tried to resolve them by taxing the states, because
