Heroes come in many shapes and sizes, but what really makes a hero a hero? In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, by Richard Connel, our course hero was introduced. He showed several characteristics of a hero, but some may argue he could also be a villain. However, Rainsford’s heroic characteristics outweigh his contemptible side. Rainsford is the course hero for many reasons.
The first reason why Rainsford is the course hero is that he is very intelligent. One quality of being heroic is having good judgement and being knowledgeable to make decisions. His strategic ways were shown when he made complex tracks at an attempt to lose General Zaroff. “He saw that straight flight was futile… he executed a series of intricate loops; he doubled on his trail again and again, recalling all the lore of the fox hunt, and all the dodges of the fox,” (230). The setting of the story was shortly after WWI in a jungle, so he used his prior knowledge as a hunter to aide him in his current situation.

In the exposition of the plot, Zaroff told him he hunted “scum of the earth” humans and gave Rainsford an option to either hunt with him or be hunted; Rainsford refused to hunt, even though it meant almost certain death, for he believed it was wrong. “Hunting? General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder… I will not hunt,” (225-228). He wouldn’t murder innocent people, even if they were poor, unwanted men; this shows he is a good man who care’s about every human’s well
Hunting is a game where you can have fun killing a certain type of animal, but could be very dangerous at the same time. In “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford is a character that is a very good hunter. So one day him and his buddy's went out on a yacht and went out on the sea to go to the caribbean to look for this island to hunt Jaguars. But while on a yacht he feel of the boat and fell into the sea. Moving on he was on this Island and met this General.
Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. During the time Rainsford is in Zaroff’s house they have a conversation about hunting. Zaroff tells Rainsford about him hunting humans. Rainsford says, “I can’t believe you are serious, General Zaroff. This is a grisly joke...........
Hook: There are many situations where you would have to be a survivor. Aron Ralston, Hyeonseo Lee and Mr. Rainsford, a fictional character from “The Most Dangerous Game”, are all survivors. Ms. Lee had to leave North Korea illegally, Rainsford had to survive a murders game and Aron Ralston had to somehow find a way to get his arm out of a huge boulder. To be an extraordinary survivor you need three traits: determination, knowledge and hope. T:To begin Aron Ralston had determination.
General Zaroff said “I’m going now to have my wound dressed, it is only a slight one, but I shall be back.” (Connell, 26) The author states that Rainsford is very intelligent. He uses his hunting experiences to try and outsmart Zaroff and uses his knowledge to figure out what to
Sanger Rainsford was a very smart, successful man. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Rainsford had outsmarted General Zaroff many times but only three are: making different paths to confuse Zaroff, hiding in the tree from Zaroff when he was hunting him, and hiding in Zaroff’s bedroom curtains to kill him when he came into his room. Rainsford said to himself “I’ll give him a trail to follow” (Richard Connell) page 24, so he made many different loops and paths for him to follow. He made it confusing for Zaroff and he seemed to fall for it.
This quote shows that Rainsford is smart because during this part, he is being very smart when he creates traps for Zaroff and tries to hide his tracks. During the story, Rainsford is also Respectful. He shows that he is respectful when this happens he is nice to Zaroff for letting him into his home. Rainsford showed his respect by saying“thank you, General”
They hunt humans. Just like that Rainsford becomes another target of Zaroff's. Zaroff kills several people a week. Using only a small caliber pistol and his wits he is an effective killer. After the “kill”, Zaroff takes the head off and puts it on a plaque to go with the other heads.
Empty. This house is so big, everywhere I turn there is a new room I have yet to be in. Ever since I have killed Zaroff, things have been lonely and boring. What if I had not killed him?
Being hunted Rainsford poses many questions regarding Zaroff and his survival. As stated, “Rainsford second thought was even more terrible. It sent a shudder of cold horror through his whole being. Why had the general smiled? Why had he turned back?”
Also, General Zaroff is an extreme hunter and doesn’t find pleasure in hunting regular animals. Zaroff says the most dangerous game is humans because they have the ability to reason. Rainsford is going to be hunted and is given a certain amount of time to survive. Moreover, while Rainsford is being hunted Zaroff
In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford and General Zaroff disagree on what a human being is. The general believes that humans are no different from animals. Rainsford believes that human are not animals, but civilized people with feelings. God made humans, but not to kill each other. General Zaroff thinks differently about humans compared to Rainsford.
However, it does not change for the better. In the middle of the story when he finds out Zaroff hunts fellow human beings, to Zaroff's surprise, Rainsford’s thought and reaction is utter shock and disbelief. “‘But you can’t mean-’ gasped Rainsford. ‘And why not?’”(10). Zaroff knowing Rainsford was a great hunter he hoped that Rainsford would accompany him on a hunt; however, Rainsford accuses him of being a cold-blooded killer.
Tanner Toussaint In the short story The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff. One of the reasons why Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff is on the island the only way to live is to hunt or to be the one being hunted. Secondly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because Zaroff wanted to die. Lastly, Rainsford is justified in killing General Zaroff because killing Zaroff is going to be the only way Rainsford will escape the island from a psychopath.
Hero: A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities; however, heroism is not synonymous with perfection. Man can be a hero in spite of having some flaws. This is apparent in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, a story about the Salem Witch Trials in which Abigail Williams accuses dozens of innocent people of witchcraft. Despite being flawed, John Proctor, Reverend Hale, and Elizabeth Proctor can demonstrate their heroism in The Crucible. John Proctor is shown to be both a hero and a flawed man in regards to his lechery.
“A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is braver five minutes longer” Ralph Waldo Emerson. The term “hero” is very over-used. Contrary to common belief, being a hero is not scoring the winning touchdown at a football game. A hero is someone who fights for the well-being of others, even if it means dying. Heroism is performing wonderful acts of goodness without looking for recognition and persevering through tough challenges, but not giving up or running away from danger.
