“Anyone who’s tried to pay a heating bill, fill a prescription, or simply buy groceries knows all too well that the current minimum wage does not cut the mustard.” -Sherrod Brown Over the past few years there has been a lot of talk about changing the minimum wage laws. Many believe that by raising the pay to those with minimum wage jobs would help end poverty throughout our country. Others believe that it would cause even more poverty leading to inflation. However, I believe that raising the minimum wage would be very beneficial to those living in the United States. The idea of the minimum wage was first brought about during the 1930’s through the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. This act banned the use of child labor and set the minimum …show more content…

According to Don’t Raise Minimum Wage written by Sean McGarvey, by raising the minimum wage less jobs will become available to laborers causing an inflation in prices to buyers. If the wages increase large corporations such as McDonalds and Walmart will lay off the majority of their workers in order to pay for the other employees raise. The employees that get laid off are often the ones that are too young and inexperienced to better the company. This could prevent teens and less experienced laborers from getting jobs. These companies also could higher their prices on their products in order to pay for the raises for their employees. In the cartoon “Two Out of Three Like a Minimum Wage Hike” the cartoonist shows how one laborer gets laid off in order to pay for the other two employees raises. In conclusion, I believe that the minimum wage should be raised. It is not fair that some hardworking laborers have to lower their standards of living because they do not make enough money to support themselves and/or their families. For people that live in states such as New York, the raise would greatly benefit them.
