Importance of Rank Structure All throughout my life I’ve been taught by my mentors that leadership is grown, cultivated, and earned. What organization embodies that the most other than the Marine Corps. In life you are always going to have leaders whether or not you are one or striving to be one. Leadership should be respected even if you dislike the one charge. All leaders no matter how great or revered make mistakes. As someone who strives to be a leader I strive to learn from not only my mistakes but also the mistakes of my leaders. I recently made a mistake I disrespected a leader in front of other leaders. Thus proving that no matter how much I thought of myself as a leader I am not yet a leader. The Marine Corps values rank structure …show more content…
It is up to those striving to be leaders and those who already are leaders to determine how it is seen and treated. One way in which the rank structure is viewed is that of a pyramid. The reasoning behind this is that the person who is in charge sits at the top of the pyramid and commands all those who are below him. The type of leadership the commander or CO deems necessary determines how he or she leads their subordinates. A commander would first, have his sub commanders, i.e. his 1stsgt, company gysgt, and platoon sgt’s. This forms the second level of the pyramid, to issue orders too. Next from there the order from highest to lowest rank forming and ever-expanding pyramid until it reached the lowest rank and there by forming the lowest and biggest level. This allows for orders to be quickly and effectively issued to the Marines. It also allows for accountability to be easily to conducted so that the commander will know if any of his Marines are missing, sick, or injured. This is also one of the most important reasons for the rank structure to have been created is that any time a commander can find out the condition of the Marines in their …show more content…
Respect is a word that has a lot of depth to it no matter what way you use it. The word by definition is kind of hard to pin down concretely because it is subjective, and it can be used in many different ways with many different meanings based on the usage. It is a word that everybody wants a piece of no matter how big or small the piece they get is. All definitions aside, the respect that most people want is the respect that is earned by the showing of honorable actions or personality characteristics. Be it dedication and sacrifices for one’s job or ones moral and ethical views and principles. These are examples of some traits a person can earn respect from normally. I say “Normally” because in all facets of life respect is almost always something to be earned and given on a personal level. My personal view is that showing respect is more a statement about us than those to whom we show it. Others may or may not merit our respect but giving others their dignity protects our integrity and honor. We can set limits, but we do not have to stoop to gross behavior to protect those boundaries. Showing respect to others and allowing them their dignity shows belief in another 's potential and allows healing and growth. We must see that potential. We all need respect, regardless of how immature and gay we behave. We all need others to see our potential and
If you are mean to someone, then they will be mean back. So if you want to be treated with respect, then you got to give respect to
This idea of respect is far different from the dictionary definition, but it is widely used to teach this complex concept. Why is this? I found my answer in Angela’s Ashes when analyzing the relationship between Frank McCourt and his father. A central theme in
My focus is to make sure that my Subordinates completely understand not only what they should be doing but why they should be doing it with a comprehension of how what they’re doing works when done correctly. When the Marines understand how something works when done correctly, I have found that they tend to retain the information better and longer. I also approach every situation, leadership challenge, dilemma, and training opportunity from the central idea that I was a junior Marine at some point and through that lens I consider what was most effective in training me and apply those lessons. I regularly self-evaluate using the Leadership traits & principles and task out my Marines through various methods requiring them to evaluate themselves similarly. I do not hand out answers to Marines asking questions
The Marine Corps values rank structure and respect to that rank structure even if you are completely in the right to correct or call out a higher rank on something they did wrong it is demanded of you to use the upmost possible tact and respect. From Private to Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps this applies. One saying I learned that comes to mind, in regard to respecting rank structure, “if you respect the man you respect the rank.” I do my best to live by this in the Marine Corps. I believe that myself and for the most part everyone at every rank can have trouble at times remembering our place in the Corps.
To Respect or to be a Kiss Up “Treat others the way you want to be treated. ” We’ve all heard that overused phrase growing up. The same goes for me as well, and to me, respect has been a huge part of my culture and many other Asian cultures. Respect is the root of what makes people who they are today. It shows that you admire them, that you care for them, or possibly even fear them.
Respect is a big part of our lives still. Although the presence of many of the virtuous Native American values is very meager today, this one still exists as a miniscule glimmer across our lives. One must have respect for others to first have respect for themselves. You make a choice of how people will see you: as a incorrigible person, or as a respectful person. People will usually treat you accordingly.
Through the past 11 years that I have been an enlisted Soldier, I have seen the value of leadership and the effect good and poor leadership can have on Soldiers and
In the Navy, many Sailors are assigned to leadership positions whether they like it or not. Fortunately for the author, he has been positively influenced by his past leadership rather than negatively. In 2002 his first Leading Petty Officer (LPO) EN1 Kevin
When two people respect each other, it makes the world more peaceful to live. The world without respect would be a world with many conflicts and much unhappiness. Some people control themselves when someone disrespects or offends
Sometimes people use the word respect to mean treating someone like a human and sometimes respect is used to mean treating someone like an authority. Sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say “If you will not respect me, I won’t respect you” which really means “If you will not treat me with authority I won’t treat you like a human.” There is something about power which causes a person to demean and shame the people they are in charge of. This shaming of others is said to happen in every branch of military around the world. Once a man of any nationality gets a taste of authority he is permanently altered.
In the past, respect was considered to be something that needed to be earned. However, respect is actually something that we owe to everyone. To begin with, if we do not show respect, we are asserting the idea of superiority of one person over another. This enforces an unjust code amongst everyone that interacts. Henry David Thoreau, a famous American author and philosopher, states that we should “Treat the individual with respect as a neighbor.”
Leaders must apply the Army Values when leading soldiers because of the fact that it builds trust and a bond. The same goes for the soldiers, in order for them both to work as an effective team and to get the mission done efficiently they both must live by these values. Once these values are integrated in a soldier’s lifestyle, it becomes too easy to work as a unit. An example on how loyalty and respect fits in a day to day to situation would be, a soldier witnessing a misunderstanding with his or her team leader and a higher ranking NCO, the soldier knows that his or her team leader is in the right. The soldier shows loyalty by standing by their team leader and shows respect by approaching both their team leader and the higher ranking NCO with tact to explain the situation from their understanding and what they witnessed.
I mean it's 2015, half of the United States, probably don’t know what the meaning of respect. I don’t even know the actually definition is. Some people don’t know what the definition means but they show respect by helping other people, doing stuff for the community, holding doors for
The most fundamental and important organizational concept used by military is the chain of command. Chain of Command can be defined as the succession of commanders superior to subordinates. Soldiers should utilize their Chain of Command to work through any given situation when a leader cannot solve the situation at hand. Effective Communication skills are essential to success in many aspects of life.
Do you have an idol or someone that you look up to? If so, you most likely look up to that person because you respect him or her. You may respect them for their qualities or admire their numerous achievements. I believe respect has a different meaning to each person based upon how they look up to someone. I feel that respect is a feeling of admiration and passion for someone because of their qualities.
