Realism In Life Of Pi

The book Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, is a very unique story. It is about a boy, Pi, who is trapped in the middle of the ocean with a tiger. Some after reading it, think this story is real. Yann Martel wanted to express how fiction is important to a reader “If we, citizens, do not support our artists, then we sacrifice our imagination on the altar of crude reality and we end up believing in nothing and having worthless dreams” (XII). Martel definitely believes in his work. He believes in stimulation of one 's dreams and imagination. We have to imagine to make something of us. Imagination is something we are all born with, and we can not lose that important part of ourselves.

In Life of Pi, Pi undergoes many traumas and challenges. With his storytelling he makes the evils of the world less important. In storytelling you can twist a story around and make it harmless, or you can make bad ideas go away by telling a story. “He moved over her. The knife appeared. He raised it in the air. It came down. Next it was up-it was red”(309). Pi covers up the horrifying tale of his mother being cut up and the killing of two men by replacing each character with an animal. It makes Pi look like a hero instead of a murder. Sometimes we need to be hidden the truth to make things seem better. Knowing that Pi killed a man does not change events. He survived.
