Nowadays, record labels and artists cannot persuade listeners to ‘buy’ their music. It is believed that the aspect of music has changed due to the popularity of music streaming. Allen (2013) agreed by stating that music streaming has changed the view of people in the industry of music. For example, popular music streaming services such as Spotify and Pandora and a number of new music streaming applications provide the easiest way for listeners to enjoy music freely without having to do illegal downloading or buying a CD. Likewise, Listeners have the ability to choose the music they want to listen. Thus, it also creates a competitiveness between other record labels and artists to be innovative in raising the quality of music. Meanwhile, Buskirk (2012) stated …show more content…
You can find [music] on the radio and TV, but these songs are chosen for you. The internet allows you to find your own music. It is more personal”
Imam also did an interview with the 21 years old college student named Sean Wilson in Atlanta, Georgia:
"The last time I bought a CD was probably in middle school, and I can't even remember what it was. Ninety percent of my friends stream music. To be honest, I haven't seen someone use iTunes in a really long time. ”
Wilson also believed that streaming are going to be a norm as it is free and more advantageous than buying music or even downloading songs.
This situation depicts an emerging change in the music industry. 5 years ago, Listeners had to choose whether to buy CD or download songs.Notably, we have started entering the new era of music streaming and their only choices are whether to download or streaming the song. Streaming music services like Spotify, Pandora and The Hype Machine have grown significantly in the past few years. Paul Resnikoff, a publisher and editor in chief of Digital Music News admitted that those companies are changing the way listeners consume
There are a number of other music streaming services in the market, the main competitors being Apple Music and Pandora. The first music streaming service I ever used was Apple Music and the selling point for me was the integration of Apple Music with your existing iTunes library, so you see all your music side-by-side. This functionality was error-prone, as it didn’t allow for cross-device syncing, meaning you have to re-download and recreate your created playlists. This became far too frustrating to deal with (amongst other issues) and so I moved to Spotify. The changeover was almost seamless as the basic structure and design of Apple Music and Spotify are very
According to the reading, consumer’s musical knowledge which includes where and when they were born and raised will all influence the change of Pop Music.
Do you prefer to listen to music? Many of people do. The musicians sell their music and receive large sums of money. However, recently, there has been a large increase in popularity for music streaming services. To keep making money musicians have been required except endorsement deals from large corporations.
Arguments, favors and oppositions Since Napster emerged, music sales in the U.S. have dropped 47 percent(RIAA,n.d.). However, Napster or any other music piracy is not to blame. In fact, music industry in 1980s and 90s was over-inflated(Swanson,2013). Artists receive a percentage of the music sales, and it is mostly between 12 and 14%(if you are a superstar, it can be 20%), after the deductions the retailer, the record company and the songwriter.
My article discussed how apple is dealing with their problem of the new Apple Music app, they are making improvements to the app and adding new features to keep the clients interested.
Pandora is a webcaster positioned in the middle of the old and new music industry
Advertisements help pay an artist’s bills which allows them to make more music. Commercials can also help pay for the costs for tours and artists can make an innumerable amount of money. Promotions can bring a more varied audience to a musician and can help bands gain popularity. By having more people listening to an artist’s music, a musician can be given a sense of reassurance to write more songs. Recently people are debating about whether advertisers should be allowed to use a musicians’ music.
Music today has become less diverse in its sound and style, and what it has to offer, as many songs are beginning to sound more like music from the past, and from the recent decade. A website on how music today sounds all the same explains how music today has lost its ability to be different from other pieces, but what music has gained to make up for less diversity is the volume level, to compete for audience attention (Scientists Just Discovered Why All Pop Music Sounds Exactly the Same, 2016). Authors state “Songs today are an average 9 decibels louder than half a century ago, confirming what industry types have long suspected: that record labels engage in a "loudness race" to catch radio listeners’ attention” (2016). o This broaden their horizons to different demographics, enabling them to reach many more people Also this ensures that they will always be in their target market because the fans of the artists will be the ones buying as well as visiting BucketFeet to keep up to date with the latest
According to RIAA statistics, the blossom of the industry began with the comparison of offline and online sales. With the popularity of digital, music industry focused on new strategies to develop their companies. From the above analysis it can be understood that the Music industry in UK is flourishing. But it still may be assumed difficult target for a new company. Internet and new technologies are developing every day and decline more and more new entrants in the market.
The music industry has been undertaking radical changes since the advent of widespread digital distribution of music. A noticeable indicator of this is total music sales: since 2000, sales of recorded music have dropped off significantly (Goldmen, 2010). Because of the record industry and sound recording, sheet music quickly became a medium that was no longer needed. Artists’ were depending on record labels to sign them. Independent record labels was a popular choice for up and coming artist, but signing with a major record label meant you had much more financial backing.
Although it has produced a new form of piracy, the advantages of music streaming far exceed the disadvantages. Indisputably, music streaming is the future of the music industry. The projected value of the music streaming industry in 2020 is 16.5 billion USD (P. Schoenfeld Asset Management LP (PSAM), 2015) is and that suggests how the music streaming business will only get bigger from here. The music industry has to adapt and adjust to the development of music streaming in order to maximise its potential and yield the most benefits. As Leon C. Megginson so aptly put, “It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change.”, without the ability to adapt, anyone would be left
Before streaming services like Spotify, SoundCloud, and Pandora were part of the mainstream, MySpace had a solid hold on the online music-social media hybrid industry. But, as the social network began to decline in popularity, all the artists and users it had once consolidated into its platform left – and spread themselves across a multitude of new music streaming services. While this much unorganized talent may seem like a daunting task for social media-music startups to take on, Bas Grasmeyer, in his article “Online Music is About to Experience Another Myspace Moment,” thinks MySpace’s fall from grace is the perfect storm for young companies to do something profound in the music-social media hybrid industry. “From the ashes of MySpace, which never managed to recover, rose a new ecosystem of music startups. " A NEW MYSPACE While the chance to create a "new ecosystem of music startups" has opened in the wake of MySpace's decline, no one company alone has yet to fill the void the social network has created.
Music is a language that everyone can understand. Through different patterns, notes, and tones, one can convey a multitude of feelings and emotions to another person. Like movie fanatics have services such as Netflix and Hulu to feed their addictions, music fans have choices of online music streaming services as well. However, these platforms do not provide the same features. I believe that Spotify is superior to Pandora in user-friendliness, streaming quality and overall experience.
The Songs On The Radio Are Okay As an avid music listener, I tend to tune into the local radio stations when wanting a daily dose of music, but in these last few years I’d rather dig out my old iPod and aux cord than endure the repetitive new age nonsense that plays on a continuous loop every two hours. No matter what button your finger eagerly clicks, you’ll have at least three stations playing the same Justin Bieber song about loving oneself or some offspring sound with a regurgitated beat and an earworm of a chorus to help the singer achieve millionaire status with your hard earned money. While artist like Judah and the Lion and Black Map get zero radio play because their music is vastly unknown to people who refuse to broaden their musical horizon from Taylor Swift and Drake.
