Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of human excellence through the understanding of our thought process (Neuro), how the way we use language influences us and the people around us (Linguistics) and our interactive process that enables us to make decisions in our lives (Programming). It is the science and art of excellence which is derived from analyzing how the best people in various fields achieve their success (What is NLP, n.d.). NLP forms the basis for this module, Mind Quest for Excellence, as NLP is the art of modelling excellence by studying how to further improve ourselves and enrich our lives. This report will be covering two main concepts I have learnt in this module, NLP presuppositions and Meta-programmes, and how I …show more content…
This NLP presupposition mean that the mind and body are components of the same system. When our minds think differently, our bodies will feel and act differently, similarly, when we act differently, our minds will think differently. (Mind and body are one system, n.d.) One example of this presupposition being applied in the area of sports and training. I frequently run for the purpose of maintaining my fitness and improving myself. There were many instances where my mind-set affected my speed and endurance. When I think and believe that I can run faster, more often than not, the timing of my run would be much more improved than my previous timing. Even when I feel exhausted, whenever I think positively and believe that I can finish the run, I will be able to do it. Similarly, on occasions I was thinking that I was too tired to finish the run, my body just gave up and stopped running even though soon after I realised that I could have endured a little longer to finish it. This is one example in my life that have shown me the power of the mind over the body. When I think positively, I can achieve greater things, however, having a negative mind-set would handicap me in many ways, obstructing me from achieving my goals. By internalizing this presupposition, I have learnt to always think positively and believe that I can accomplish my goals in …show more content…
People have different attitudes towards various tasks which can be categorized into two categories, options or procedures. An options-person, when faced with a task, tends to like to try out new and unique ways of doing things instead of following a standard method. A procedures-person, when faced with a task, tends to prefer having a standard procedure to follow to complete the task, instead of exploring various methods. Options-people are skilled at thinking of new ways or alternate procedures to do something but struggle to follow a fixed procedure even if it is necessary while procedures-people are skilled at following given procedures but have difficulty coming up with their own procedure when required. (Options Procedures Filter, n.d.) Personally, I feel that I am more of a procedures-person when it comes to task attitude. One example of this meta-programme being applied in my life is during group projects. Being in the course Aerospace Technology, many of my projects involve building planes or gliders. As I am more of a procedures-person, I tend to like to have a fixed way of doing things, hence strictly following all standard procedures. As some of my project groupmates were more of an options-person, conflicts occurred due to the difference of opinions on how things should be done. Even though there were conflicts, we managed to complete the project successfully
Often many choices can be communicated and order to make a decision and avoid judgment (Weber & Johnson,
I believe that mental strength is just as important, if not more, than physical strength when it comes to athletics. If your mental behavior is not up to date, but your physical strength is, you will most likely still not be able to complete the specific task because you are not mentally ready. I have thought about this a little bit, but after reading “What Could Be Better Than a Touchdown?” and “Why We Run” it has made me think deeper into this subject. I honestly think, that if you are not mentally ready for something, then you will not be able to achieve that goal.
He further to response to Princess Elisabeth question by introducing to her what is called (Cartesian Dualism) he uses these to explain to her that the mind, soul and the body are not the same and can never be same, which came to conclude that your mind cannot be your body and your body cannot be your mind. He also explains
This helped the author believe in himself, train harder and run that 100 kilometer race. Without that belief he may have never completed his goal. This emphasizes that without mental preparation Bernd
We know for a fact that thoughts influence actions. Why do we want that negative self talk to ourselves? We need to get ourselves our affirmations.” With this statement, Ivan intends to get people to acknowledge that negative self talk happens a lot when trying to accomplish many things but that negative self talk will only make it
The mind is what causes an athlete to set limits. When one trains like a“Stotan,” they eliminate the notion that they cannot do something. Once an athlete believes he/she can accomplish anything, and they are willing to work to get to that point; then there is not a thing that can hold back the “Stotan.”
However, I cannot allow these negative thoughts to affect me mentally. Thinking negative thoughts will, without a doubt, negatively affect the mindset I go in with on race day as well as my performance. As my coach says, “PMA- Positive mental attitude, that’s what it’s all about!” As an athlete, I have to be independent enough to have the motivation to go through the necessary treatment so that I will be able to return strong, healthy, and confident. Running, for the most part, is an independent sport.
Your example is one my favorites from the seminar. Truly, we do not realize the power of our minds and how our thoughts impact our feelings and reactions. Similar to an old technology phrase, garbage in and garbage out, we can change the very dynamic of our perceptions by placing a positive spin on a negative situation. As mentioned by Dr. Steinberg, we should fill our minds with golden nuggets (G. Steinberg, personal communication, December 12, 2015).
Conformity is when someone changes their behaviour or beliefs due to social pressure. This usually results from peer or media pressure. Compliance is when we change our behaviour but not our opinion; we often do this when requested by someone in a position of power. Internalisation is when there is a change in our behaviour and opinion and we internalise another person’s opinions and views.
The way we think greatly influences our perspective on life and our actions. Life can be challenging and from time to time there will be major setbacks however, having a growth mindset and grit contributes to success. A growth mindset is the ability to develop and alter certain qualities to achieve success. Even if you are in an unfavorable situation a growth mindset allows you to change, giving you a better chance at success. Being gritty is a tremendous advantage because you do not have to be born with intelligence you can always work harder to compensate.
Conformity in Reference to Abortion The first topic I would like to discuss would have to be the one on conformity and disagreement. In the beginning of our textbook (Not So Fast Page) it states that “Researchers must always keep in mind that people respond to their subjective interpretation of a situation, not the objective situation, especially when an experiment involves a potentially confusing scenario.” In chapter nine, Conformity is defined as changing one’s behavior or beliefs in response to some real (or imagined) pressure from others (p.305).
Rhonda Byrne wrote a very interesting story about a secret revealed to the word in her book entitled " the secrets". she describes the triangle of the creative process consisted of ask, believe, and receive. she also explains how the positive thinking process can be life changing and transformational. Success for Rhonda can be achieved trough a learned process with positive thinking that will be eventually mastered and controlled " the secret". Rhonda is a positive thinker and convinces us to be positive as we become what we think about most as our mind is the center of our destiny and we are the masterpiece of our own life.
Everyday, people are faced with the task of making decisions. Most people decide when to wake up, what to eat, what to wear, who to interact with, and countless other choices. In a world surrounded by choices, people are confronted with easy-to-make and, conversely, challenging decisions. A decision can be influenced by one’s own experience, logic, and feelings. Making a decision is synonymous with a result; whatever choice one accepts, results in a particular outcome.
WORKPLACE DECISION MAKING- MY REFLECTION 'S Dealing with ambiguity comes naturally to us humans, and it starts with learning our first language as an infant. The effective decision making is an iterative learning process acquired by relying on experiences from our own past reflexes and also learning from those of others. The past couple of years presented an interesting mix of challenges in my workplace, including complex projects with tight deadlines, budget cuts and building out teams at short notice later. One such project involved automation of calculations for economic risk capital, which is a loss buffer maintained by banks.
