My Writing Process
Characterization is the craft element that gives my work the most impact. Characterization helps me convey information about my characters. It clearly portrays the behavior of each character either through their actions or speech. Description of the characters’ appearance and explaining their mannerism helps me built my plot. Through characterization my audience is able to know the characters and understand their impact in the development of the plot. Characterization ensures that my stories are compelling and my intended message is passed. Through characterization, I am able to give readers a sense of character personality; this in turn brings my characters to life. For instance, in my rough draft, I characterized my sister.

At first I start with character studies of each of my intended characters. This enables me to develop my plot and work on the setting of my story. The plot build up helps me create the different conversations within my story and create each characters role in my plot. The length of each event in my plot varies depending on the level of imagination I assign to each of them. Each event has a specific set of characters whose roles contribute to the effective development of my plot. I also work on a chapter break down and assign events to the relevant chapters depending on their chronological arrangement.
During the writing process I encounter different challenges. The most common challenge is often organization. The writing process demands a lot of reasoning regarding some topics. Gaining the necessary insights that would facilitate effective communication between my piece and the readers thought require regular reflection on the thought process. Possessing the ability to shift into different perspectives within the paper and still maintaining the main intentions of the paper requires good organization. My arguments are often not strong enough thus my organization at times may lack analytical depth and
Character Development Some people read because they love to, some people read because they have too ,but when people read they may not notice what the author is doing. Authors use many literary devices that make the piece you are reading worthwhile. Literary devices do many things whether it is to develop a character; build structure or even describe how a person looks. I will be explaining the various literary devices Gennifer Choldenko used to develop the characters in the book “Al Capone Does My Shirts.”

All readers have come across the stereotypical character who is charming, good-looking, and the savior of the story and our hearts, but that is present in commercial fiction. In literary fiction, characters are something greater and deeper. In literary fiction, characterization is considered one of the most important elements in an author’s work. Characterization is the concept of creating a character.
If the reader can’t relate to or understand the characters in the story it is hard to get into the story. To have full reading experience, the reader must take notes, reread and examine the author's literary style. The the language, how the author writes or uses words may bring displeasure to the reader. Characters are very important to the reading experience. They make up the stories we read.
How have I improved as a writer? I am thinking about my action plan as a writer have I improved, have I met the goals I set out to achieve on my first day of class, and what have I learned in this class? I will go over my time in this class and review the various topics I mentioned above and more. Looking back over my time in this class I will critique and praise myself. How I felt about writing when I first started this class compared to how I feel now, I would have to say I am more comfortable with writing.
There are many ways an author can convey the message of any story. Elements such as the Plot, Conflict, Character/Characterization, Setting, Symbolism, Narration, and Imagery are used in these ways. For example, in the In the story "Harrison Bergeron", the author Kurt Vonnegut uses the characterization, and the conflict to communicate the message to the reader that Uniformity and strict laws lead to a loss of personal freedom and individuality. Vonnegut uses the element of characterization.
Being aware of character development in a text can assist one in analyzing that text. It helps the reader to know more about why some events take place in books. Character development drives the plot because if the characters don’t move the story doesn’t move. The character has to develop in order for the novel to progress. One example of a piece of literature with a very distinct character development is classic novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Introduction Authors use characterization to give the reader better understanding of what the character is like. In "Lamb to the Slaughter" a series of Literary Devices are used to develop main characters and their feelings about each other. Roald Dahl in "Lamb to the Slaughter" uses conflict, imagery, and direct characterization to develop the love Mary has for her husband so that the reader understands how one thing can change a person but deep down they're still the same person. Paragraph 1 Dahl uses conflict to develop Mary's feelings for her husband.
A reader must know the correct characterization of someone in order to fully understand the story. Understanding the point of view and characterization is just as important as understanding the plot. The conflict, climax and other aspects are a major part of the plot as a whole. To put it differently, all the components of a story are equal.
A simple powerful story of a rural family that contains a returned changed daughter leaves a family in surprise. “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker demonstrates that the theme of the story that consists different views of heritage by using literary elements like characterization, imagery, and settings. Each literary element holds a strong value to define the meaning of heritage from different perspectives of the characters. Alice Walker demonstrates it by Mama, Maggie, and Dee by how they each value their heritage by the things that they have left from their ancestors. To start of with, characterization is the highlights and explanation of the details of a character (“Definition and Examples of Literary Terms Characterization”).
“For the girl grew to be beautiful and gentle, affectionate and sincere. ”(Desiree 1) By these quote the author’s description makes the characters from the story more realistics for the reader. In “Desiree’s Baby” by Kate Chopin uses direct and indirect characterization to describe the character of Madame Valmonde, Desiree, and Armand Aubigny. Characterization is the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character.
Throughout the term there has been many writing assignments —big or small— that helped reflect my writing process or the process itself. In the beginning of the course I felt like I was an “ok” writer, but lacked some skills such as: organization, sentence variety, and vocabulary. Also, I did not like to write and had a feeling of dislike when forced to write. I felt like I improved on everything I wanted and was seen throughout the semester. I know how to organize my ideas, the worksheets given in class to work on sentence variety really helped, and vocabulary was built on some level.
Many times, Maurier uses characterization to allow the reader to better understand the characters in the story. For example, when the birds begin to come down the chimney and she writes, “He got sticks and paper and put them on the embers, then reached for the can of paraffin,” (74) the reader is able to learn about Nat. You may discover that Nat is a very witty and intelligent man as he knows that the smoke will keep the birds from entering and kill any birds that are already in the chimney. Next, Nat says, “I’ve got to go get food. I’ve got to go to the farm to find food,” (78).
ENG-122 Reflective Essay My writing process has changed tremendously over the course of this class. I feel more accomplished, confident and I feel sometimes that my ideas and thoughts just come in to my mind out of nowhere and I start writing about anything now. I pay attention to my punctuation and grammar more as I have polished them more now, not only when I write but then others write as well. I am constantly looking for errors and I highly think this is helping me a lot in my career.
