The most basic way I know how to describe social work is that it is a profession that concerns itself with the well being of a population and social workers help to provide assistance and support to those within that population. There are many different subsets of populations that one may find themselves in, such as elder care, families, children and youth, and those with disabilities, to name a few. Each of these groups has its own particular set of concerns and challenges, and so does every individual within that group. Social work is a complex network, but the overall goal is the same: act ethically and provide social justice to those in need. Since starting my career path in human services I have always strived to do just this. Something …show more content…
My family didn’t have a lot of money, but we were not underprivileged in any way. I never wondered when I was going to eat next, I had clean clothes and went to bed in the same house every night. I fully recognize that I am extremely fortunate and feel lucky to have grown up the way that I did. Going to an inner city school meant I was exposed to all kinds of race religion and socioeconomic circumstances. At the time I really didn’t think much about it. Now I feel like it prepared me to interact with different groups of people and still feel comfortable. However, when I started my studies in Human Services studies I was able to really delve deeper into understanding the challenges that those around me face. I thought that I understood so much about different groups of people just because they had surrounded me my whole life. When I began to read more and hear personal stories of triumph and tragedy, I suddenly realized that I didn’t know as much as I thought I did. When I started working with adults with disabilities, I was once again face to face with a situation I thought I was prepared for but soon realized I had much to learn. I had no idea how many people were involved in supporting one person, how much rallying it takes to get funding, how unfairly so many people in this population are treated. Both of these …show more content…
I hope that I am thought of as person with extensive knowledge of the resources in my area as well as someone who continues to grow and learn from each new experience. I want to empower young people to better their lives and be a role model within my community. But with any goals one makes in life there are almost always several smaller goals one must make and steps one must take in order to get there. Applying is the very first step that I want to take in order to reach my goal of attending USC School of Social Work. The second step I want to take is taking in as much information as I can from my professors at USC. There are many more steps on my path, many more than I am even able to realize right now. I look forward to having the opportunity to learn at this University and to keep making goals and taking steps. I have heard of academics at USC and have always held the University in high regard. I believe that this school will provide me the right tools and resources and help me on my career path. I would feel incredibly lucky to be able to attend USC and be able to learn from people who have dedicated their lives to social work and are able to answer my questions and help me realize the next steps that I need to
As social workers, speaking on social welfare policy standpoint, social workers do everything from the federal level to the state level insuring and overseeing the administration of social programs. It takes the efforts of social workers in policy makers, as well as program administration to adequately provide the assistance to our clients. Implementation of specific policies can be undermined if the social workers believe that the policy will not be in the best interest of the client. Crises and pivotal events sometime shape the course of implementation, such as wrongdoing by implementers or incorrect decision that adversely affect the lives of clients (Jansson 2018, pg. 466).
Moreover, I hope to find other organizations and opportunities to serve others, either on or off campus, that will make others' lives better, possibly even becoming involved in initiatives run by the local school system, since I hope to be heavily involved in at least one of the local schools as I
Social workers have several responsibilities. They have to provide service, justice, and dignity to a client. They have to possess integrity, competence, and patience. Social workers need to possess knowledge of human rights, and how to perform scientific inquiry. Social workers occasionally have cases in which problems ensue and a solution is not found within a certain time frame.
There are countless things social workers can do to address the oppression and discrimination seen in the criminal justice system. One that I feel is extremely crucial is being advocates for those individuals returning to society after being incarcerated. Social Workers should be there to help those individuals get back on their feet and help lessen the oppression and discrimination they can possibly receive. They can help these individuals find a job, a place to stay, and most of all help them get back on their feet.
For once in my life I felt pride because of who I was, and craved to know more, learn more. You see before this class I had thought that I was evading this destiny of failure with all of my efforts, running from those who hated me because of how I was
I hope to bring diversity to all who walk on the campus. My background has shaped me into the intelligent African American woman I am today. Without growing up in the “hood”, I may have not been able to find the best career that interested me. I also would not have been able over all the challenges thrown at me. Instead I remained determined and motivated so that I was able to achieve all of the goals set before me.
Social Working Paula Dossett English Department, Mt. Carmel High School English II Mr. Nathan Wheatley February 2, 2023 Social Working Social workers are people that can help solve everyday problems. Social work is more than just helping children, many social workers host big corporation fund raisers for many more than good causes. Social work is a very diverse profession with many different branches of social work to choose from. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 11% employment growth for social workers between 2018 and 2028, much faster than the 5% projected growth rate for the economy as a whole (SocialWorkLicensure, 2020).
Modern social workers are frequently tasked with certain objectives by their agencies, which leave little room for any work beyond specific treatments and timeframes (Gitterman & Knight, 2016). Although social workers are bound to the set of ethics put forth by the NASW, practitioners are often limited to focusing on the issues of the individual rather than the larger societal issues that may be behind those concerns. Additionally, many social work students end up working in direct practice, rather than macro work. There is a need for social workers to engage at the macro level in order to facilitate community organization and empowerment. Critics suggest this theory may not take into account the unique experiences of each individual and perhaps key characteristics of the individual or group are not taken into consideration (Sadan, 1997).
Social work is a career that I have recently become interested in pursuing. I spent many years with misconceptions concerning the sector. However, following three years of working close by these experts, I have picked up a more profound comprehension of the significance of the work. I am especially interested in working in child welfare along with terminally ill children. I have got to a stage in my career where I have started to search out instruction that will make me more efficient in creating plans and providing services for vulnerable people.
In the program, we have initiated to what I consider the “second phase” of 2nd year field placement. The process came by really quick, in which to a moment I felt unprepared. It is amazing to think how quick time is flying. It is simultaneously exciting but nerve-racking. This semester has been a really tough one.
Social workers treat each person in a caring and respectful fashion, mindful of individual differences and cultural and ethnic diversity. Social workers promote clients ' socially responsible self-determination. Social workers seek to enhance clients ' capacity and opportunity to change and to address their own needs. Social workers are cognizant of their dual responsibility to clients and to the broader society. They seek to resolve conflicts between clients ' interests and the broader society 's interests in a socially responsible manner consistent with the values, ethical principles, and ethical standards of the profession (National Association of Social Worker) (2018).

Social work is a dynamic helping profession, where the main goal is to improve the welfare of every individual in a society. Law is a system of legal rules that governs the way members of society interact with each other. Law is necessary for order, justice, punishment, protection and to settle dispute. I feel that my education at the University of North Texas has prepared me for a career in social work because it gave me opportunities to branch out of my comfort zone and become familiar with multiple populations of people. Before entering the BSW Program at UNT I was set on working with the geriatric population. I had worked with geriatrics before and was very comfortable with them, forming connections was easy, and I felt this was the population I was meant to be working with. Once I was accepted into the program though I learned that just because I had experience and was comfortable working with this specific population, it didn’t mean I had to continue working with them. My professors provided us with many opportunities to learn about and become familiar with many different populations.
