Where do I start? We have so much catching up to do since the last letter. My time spent fighting with the Union has been filled with chaos. We’ve been hiking through northern Mississippi for three days. The weather has been fairly good to us since the last few weeks were filled with snow. Without our intense training, we would have never made it this far. I remember marching through the ice cold rain and wanting to quit. But I remembered why I was fighting and how I wanted to make my country proud. Our uniforms are often varied due to the limitations of supplies. On the last day of battle I was shot. We won however! Luckily the bullet only grazed my leg. The doctors have made me stay in the infirmary. They think an infection might arise. With the quality of the this place, I’m surprised many of us are still alive. The operation tables are soaked with blood from the other wounded soldiers. The tools aren’t cleaned very often either. I guess I should just be thankful that I don’t need an amputation. Those who do are lucky to be alive. I’m currently out of the infirmary at a new camp in southern Mississippi. I’m also able to walk now. I do have a slight limp though. My dedication to the Union suppresses …show more content…
Let them know that I’ll be able to see them again soon. Do they ask a lot about me? Tell them I’m doing fine and that the war will be over soon. I’m confident the Union will win this war. We’ve had better luck with food before this camp. The food here isn’t as good as yours. We often eat hardtack and were lucky if we get something else. I’ve gotten used to sleeping on not even a half full stomach. The fatigue is normal now. We do get pork sometimes, but that’s rare. The grease helps soften the hard tack which is nice. I think that’s what I miss the most. Sitting at the table and eating our family. I miss hearing the kids tell me what they did and reading to them before they go to bed. Everyday I feel like I’m missing a
I will be re-enlisting as part of Washington 's army for my freedom from the tyranny of Britain, and for the future of my family, my country. Money is scarce, and even through war makes it into to gold. If I do make money, I could use it to make a good house for a future wife and children. Some soldiers got easy, never going through the brutal parts of the war. “ What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.
After 11 weeks of working in the lavines I am transferred to work in the infirmary. I attend to the sick patients and try to cure them with the little resources we have. I have no experience in the medical field at all, I’ve decided it is my job to keep spirits up or to help people die in peace. Not many people who walk into the infirmary walk out again, as I stated before there were many selections and the weak simply aren 't strong enough to get well. I’ve seen every injury you could possibly imagine from the common killer, Typhus, to internal mutilation from the experiments.
I was only a young boy when I was forced to be one of the Continental soldiers, this was one of the coldest winter I’ve ever experienced…… It was on December 9th, 1777, when General Washington and we, the Continental Army, had to build a winter camp at a place that in the future, killed thousands of soldiers, and the name of this place is Valley forge. This place is about 20 mis away from Philadelphia. But here’s the problem, my enlistment is up in one month, my friends wants me to stay so we can fight for liberty and freedom, but I don’t think I’m able to afford the cost of dying,I thought long about this, but I choose to leave….. (Waldo 141) Starting from the first day we arrived at Valley Forge, my life never had been better, instead, it’s
The Vietnam War, which lasted from 1955 to 1975, was one of the most divisive and controversial conflicts in American history. It was a military conflict between the Communist North Vietnam, and South Vietnam, with the United States and other Western powers supporting the Southern Vietnamese. The war was fought in the context of the Cold War because the United States feared that Communism would spread throughout Southeast Asia if North Vietnam managed to take control of the entire country. The war had such a profound impact on American society, and still remains a subject of intense debate and analysis today. After World War I, Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, expressed many grievances against the French colonialists.
If I improve as I have been doing I will look somewhat like a man by the time I come home again. I have been interrupted twice since I commenced this letter, once to go on battalion drill and the second time to go on dress parade. I guess I will get to close it now. We have not been payed yet except 13 dollars that we were payed while at Greensburg. We will hardly be payed of monthly wages for a month yet.
The Vietnam War was fought between the North and South Vietnamese over Communism. The North pushed for a communist regime while the South favored a more democratic government. During the time of this war, the U.S. was pushing towards containing Communism, and vowed to support any nation resisting communism. Although America’s policy of containment had good intentions, this often led to the support of corrupt leaders and governments. President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam was Catholic and did not lead well.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw the barrel of a gun and a flash. Pop!, is what all of us heard. One single bullet to penetrate through Mike’s leg leaving a gash. As I went to go aid him, the person that shot the bullet tried to runaway, but was unlucky. A medic came to fly him out along with the rest of the injured.
Loud noises seemed to scare me, I have no idea why but screeching tires, Revving engines, screaming children, and even the occasional barking dog will get me on edge and paranoid. In my younger years I joined the US Air Force as a way to get away from everyday life, I just wanted to get out of the everyday monotony of work, sleep, wake, repeat. The only thing that brought me any kind of variety was my sweetheart back home, Hazel. We met in high school when I was just 17 years of age, somehow we are still together today through the night terrors and struggles I constantly suffer.
The hell that combat military occupational specialties put themselves through just to be able to defend this country is not easy at all. There are days that these brave men go without eating or having water because of the locations that they are
Mud, dirt, sweat, tears, disease, injury, are all normalities for a deployed military man. The Things They Carried, the men who made it home from fighting in the war came back different than they once were. Once they have seen the unspeakable and experienced what they have experienced, coming home can be a foreign feeling; home may not feel like home anymore. People are taught to forget their troubles and move forward in life, but the lasting emotional and physical burdens of war make this close to impossible.
With all the violence and injuries, I was elated to find out that no one had died but some seemed close (5). I went to a hospital for my injuries were I was told that I was lucky to not have more inflamed eyes or broken bones or deeper cuts (12). When they finished cleaning, stitching the wounds and setting fractures (8). I went to see how others were doing but I was denied access to them.
This three day battle was horrible, the two best armies going to battle was not going to be a pretty sight. Thankyou to all those people that have lost their lives, another battle won and another battle closer to be done with this dreadful and disgusting war. Thanks to you our flag still flies
As I peer through the thick smoke, reminding myself why I chose to come in the first place, I see a half dead man on the floor- begging for water. We don’t have enough food or clothes. There are very few of us left to fight against the redcoats. Even though on some days we are cheerful, we are starving and freezing. I am wondering if I should re-enlist or go back home.
It was 1965 and the first U.S. troops were landing in South Vietnam, there were 3,500 U.S. Marines added to the already 25,000 advisers in the country. This war would define how we view life for decades and generations. Most people thought it was a mistaken war with no purpose other than to stop the flow of communism in Asia and the fear of others would follow, and add to the strength of the Soviet Union during the height of the cold war. Some people turned the war into a racist battle ground to justify the uprising and protest against the war. The troops were poorly armed and on average fought 240 days a year when compared to WW2 with only 40 days a year for infantrymen.
With communism on the rise, America is forced to contain communism to stop the domino effect of communism from taking over. With communism taking over the united states is forced to join the war in Vietnam. This war was one of many, but controversy strikes this one hard. The Vietnam War was controversial for a variety of reasons. While the Vietnam War was originally supported due to the containment of communism and the domino effect it sparked controversy due to the credibility gap and the united states army draft.
