The Anatomy and Physiology of a Registered Nurse Career Lina Marulanda Miami-Dade College Job Description According to the Miami Dade College Leon Medical School of Nursing a Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing the patient’s health problems and needs. Following an assessment Registered Nurses must make and carry out a nursing care plan for their patient, as well as maintaining accurate medical records. In some cases Registered Nurses can advise their patients on ways to maintain good health and prevent any diseases or further complications. After completing the appropriate coursework it is necessary to take the NCLEX examination and receive a passing score to receive state licensure. To enter into the ASN or BSN programs it is important to complete the course prerequisites. All schools have different prerequisites but some of the most common include: Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Biology, Statistics, Psychology, Microbiology, Nutrition, Healthcare Practices, English and College level mathematics. Two local schools that offer the nursing program are Miami Dade College and Florida International University. Miami Dade College offers a variety of pathways to the ASN degree, as well as an RN to BSN program in which an already licensed nurse receives her bachelor’s degree. The cost of the ASN program can cost anywhere from eight to ten thousand dollars in Miami Dade College. Florida International University offers different pathways to the BSN program, including general, advanced (for students who already possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution) and RN to BSN. The BSN program offered at FIU can cost anywhere from sixteen to twenty thousand dollars. An ASN degree can be completed in 2 years or more, while the BSN program can be completed in 4 years or more. In addition to earning the ASN or BSN degrees nurses must also earn several certifications such as: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, , Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support and Automated External Defibrillator. Once the Registered Nurse certification and license are received a nurse may improve their skills and advance their education by receiving more than 100 separate certifications, some of which include: ACRN (AIDS Certified RN), CCRN (Critical Care RN), CFRN (Certified Flight RN), CPN (Certified Pediatric Nurse) and CRNA (Certified RN
