The long-term goal of the current study is to determine the long-term effects of reminiscence therapy on depressive levels among individuals with mild dementia. The objective of this proposed study is to determine the specific effects of reminiscence therapy in improving depression symptoms and reducing depressive levels among adults with mild dementia in the long-term, especially young adults. Therefore, the expected outcomes will be sought to include a reduction of further cognitive decline and improve depressive symptoms of life amongst these patients. To accomplish the objective, the researcher will test the hypotheses through these Specific Aims:
Specific Aims
Specific Aim 1: To determine the long-term effect of reminiscence therapy in reducing depressive levels in patients with mild dementia. The hypothesis of this aim is: There will be a significant difference in depressive levels among adults with dementia who receive reminiscence therapy and adults with dementia who receive usual care (control group) as measured by the Beck Depression inventory-II. The researcher will test the hypothesis by using

Furthermore, the methodology of this proposed research is unique whence of data collection, data measurement, and the analytical methods designed to handle this novel data. In addition, it will utilize a highly reliable and valid measurement instrument to measure the levels of depression to include all ages. Additionally, this proposed research will give a chance to determine the feasibility of conducting such research amongst young adults. The planned intervention is also innovative because it is based on the application of theories of behavior change, to improve both depression and function. Overall, the intervention settings, target population, and intervention approaches are all
The early stages of dementia are often just seen as “getting old” to those of us who are not trained. In this stage patients find it hard to follow a story through to the end, whether they are telling it or listening to it. Often they will notice everyone laughing but won’t actually understand a joke that was being told. It can also start with subtlety of slower responses to questions.
Dementia History Dementia is a disease that brings grief to a family if it is not handled correctly. This disease gradually begins and worsens the cognitive ability over several years. In the dawn of nineteenth century, dementia was just a clinical concept. The doctors believed that dementia in aged people fluctuated within the idea that was due to the blockage in the major arteries in the brain or small strokes inside the vessels of the cerebral cortex. Recently they believe that the dementia is caused due to the mixture of both conditions.
In this paper, an experiment was performed to evaluate a small portion of people in each grade level and measure the level of risk they have for becoming depressed. Showing the trends of the amount of depression symptoms shown and the different common answers that were listed when the students took the test. There is a trend between the grades and how many kids are at a higher risk of being depressed. This essay will also show the methods that were used to collect the information and the different tools/ways used to record all the information. There will also be tables and/or graphs used to represent the data that has been collected.
Human development has interesting stages due to the changes in behaviour and growth of the body. Adolescent depression is a serious development issue which faces most households, hence requires proper attention. The occurrence of adolescent depression is most common in the modern society, though the impact of the depression has not been addressed adequately and may be significant. Many behavioural problems, for example, school dropout, drug abuse, unprotected sexual activity, suicide, self- inflicted injuries are the result of depression. Regular depression screening is important in the healthcare setting since it helps the physicians treat depression and employ recovery mechanisms for the patients.
In this report I am going to assess ways in which different types of dementia affect an individual and also the individual’s family and friends. Due to the symptoms and consequences of dementia, a major impact on individual is the feeling of insecurity and the loss of confidence in themselves and their abilities. This can increase a sense of loss of control which in turn may result in the individuals doubting themselves and losing trust in their own judgements. These problems are made worse by the reaction of the people around them that are closest to them, such as friends and family and colleagues will begin to respond to them differently and not treat them in the same way as before.
I. Just imagine waking up one morning and not knowing or remembering anything you did yesterday or the past years of your life? Well that’s what people who have dementia go through. They cannot remember who their kids are or anyone around them. II. Dementia effects your memory and a person’s ability to achieve a normal everyday task and activities.
The Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation (LIAF) is a social model day program for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other related memory disorders to help improve their quality of life. LIAF is located in Port Washington, NY and offers services to treat individuals with early, moderate and late stage Alzheimer’s. The agency population is comprised of male and female participates with ages ranging from mid-fifties to late-nineties who all suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. With age, some elderly slowly start to forget their memory. That’s huge topic and concern in the elderly community. A person would live a long life and towards the end, they start to forget everything they ever accomplished and the life they’ve once
Introduction Alzheimer’s is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and gets worse over time. The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events or short memory loss. As the disease advances, symptoms can include difficulty with language, disorientation, mood swing and behavior problems. As a person 's condition progressed, they often withdraw from friends and family. Slowly, bodily functions deteriorated and eventually death occurs.
The traditional view, based on the work of the great German psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin (1856–1926), held that dementia, as it was called, always got worse and that the patient’s mind continued to degenerate until death” (Piotrowski and Tischauser). Bleuler’s aspect gave patients assurance for more
A reminiscence program would be considered a TR treatment program if the “activities that are provided in a long term care setting that allow the individual to improve functioning through treatment or education” (Thomas, Part II Diversional vs. TR Activities). If the reminiscence program aimed to rehabilitate and treat specific symptoms the participants were going through, than it could be considered a TR treatment program (Thomas, Part II). The reminiscence TR treatment program usually requires a physician’s order and is run one-on-one or in small groups with a certified recreational therapy specialist, CTRS (Thomas, Part II). This program requires active participation and documentation must be in compliance with rehabilitation agency standards
At eight years old, my view of the world shifted when my grandfather had his first stroke. It was a frightening experience because it was my first time witnessing a loved one deal with the negative effects of aging. Since then, I have watched my grandfather’s memory change to the point where it has become somewhat of a paradox. I have seen him be at a complete loss for the word “pizza” and not two hours later quote the musical, The Music Man, verbatim. This change in my grandpa is what initially sparked my interest in studying the aging mind in hopes to eventually help improve the quality of life for those living with dementia and other age-related diseases.
As dementia is a neurodegenerative disease, individuals diagnosed with dementia face frustration and difficulty functioning in their day to day lives. Family caregivers face similar frustration in assisting their loved one in everyday tasks. Informal care giving is a demanding responsibility and experience on family members. Psychological demands, physical demands, time demands, emotional demands are necessary to meet the needs of their loved one with dementia, therefore experiencing burn out and related emotions is quite common. Furthermore, family caregivers who may experience depressive symptoms can be less capable in managing the behavioural symptoms of dementia (Takai, Takahashi, Iwamitsu, Oishi, & Miyaoka 2011).
One of the limitations is the construction of the memory. The gaining of trust on how much an individual can trust the memory of recollection. While one may not remember what happen in their daily day life, how can one trust this therapy to recollect the memory many years ago. The construction of memory may include good memories and memories which can worsen the client’s life as it can be painful one. The client can take drastic decision such as pulling the person to court after the memories have been recollected.
Introduction Memory is the ability to maintain and use of information for the appropriate goal (1). Appropriate performance of memory depends on the health of many brain regions, including areas that are very sensitive to injury or disease. Learning and memory impairments are common complaints of individuals with symptoms of neurological disorders that impact on the daily activities and functional capabilities(2–4). Memory impairment is the most important reasons for seeking psychological evaluation in outpatient(2). In addition, many psychiatric and neurological diseases cause impairments in the process of memory(4–6).
