Drake, formally known as Aubrey Drake Graham, is a hip-hop recording artist who hails from Toronto, Canada. Graham was born to a Jewish- Canadian mother and African American father (McIntosh, Stanley, & Cowie, 2013). Initially starting his entertainment career as a child star on the hit Canadian television series Degrassi: The Next Generation, Drake has blossomed into one of contemporary hip-hop’s best acts and most successful artists (ibid). Drake’s accolades include over 70 Billboard Top 100 hits, 3 Grammys and recently being the first artist to have 20 simultaneous hits on the Hot 100 singles list (Trust, 2016). Firstly, Drake’s image and background have allowed him to become Canada’s unofficial global ambassador. Graham’s genetic make-up reflects the multi- cultural or “cultural mosaic”, which has often been attributed Canada (Mackey, 2014, p. 2). Drake is of Jewish- Canadian and African American decent; religiously he was raised both Catholic and Jewish. His background, in and of its self, represents Canadian values: “the merging of different cultures and the tolerance for different beliefs (McKercher, 1983, p. 2b,27). Drake’s image is a microcosom of the various cultures that are presented in Canada. This is best expressed in a journal about music artists which states, “[is]Drake black or white? Is he Jewish or Catholic? Is he Canadian or American?” (Pope, 2016). Drake embodies all these different identities simultaneously without directly choosing one. In its own m Drake showcases Canadian culture through his use of different sorts imagery. An example of this is the cover art that he has used on his fourth studio album, Views from the 6. The cover art features a photoshopped Drake sitting atop of the CN Tower overlooking the city (Graham, 2015). “At 553 m, the CN Tower [was the former] the tallest freestanding man-made structure in the world (Lafkovici, Hussein, & Janischewskyj). By using this famous structure, Drake is quietly promoting the captivating sight that …show more content…
This remark may be evident through his co-signing of the annual Caribbean festival, Caribbana; but it is more prevalent in his music. More recently, Drake has been noted for dabbling with the Caribbean genres of Dancehall and Soca (Kenner, 2016). His homage to these genres has resulted in hit records such as “Work” featuring Rihanna and “One Dance”, Drakes only number 1 single to date. Because of the magnitude of the two records, it has further promoted the genres unique to the Caribbean. This observation is false because Drake has shown his affiliation with other cultures thought his career Drake has spoken about his Jewish background and brought his experiences to public attention. While living with his mother in Toronto, he was identified as being “different” in the Jewish community or being “too black”, and was taunted and called a “schwartze” (a derogatory Jewish word for black people) (Pope, A). Despite these early struggles of acceptance in his own community, Drake has grown to embrace his culture and now put it on display for the world to see.Through the medium of music videos, Drake displays his affiliations with the Jewish Culture. In the music video for his song “ Hell Yeah Fucking Right” (HYFR), Drake illustrates Jewish culture by featuring elements of the coming of age Bar Mitzvah ritual. In the videoDrake reads from the
In ”Resolution and Canadian Iconography: The ’I-Canuck’ Photograph”, Tracy Whalen (2010), an associate professor, argues two things about Canadians. When it comes to ”The Iconic Image”, Canadians lack the resolve to determine what consist an iconic image and to grasp a picture visual resolution (p.446). According to Whalen (2010), the reason Canadians do not have a clear understanding ”of an iconic image goes back to the Canada’s history of citizenship” and because ”iconic images are defined as domestic productions of model citizenship, [which] Canadians have not had a long time develop these (p.454)”. Whalen (2010) continues, when Canadians were asked what is an iconic image, Canadians’ primary thought is often the image of Pierre Elliot Trudeau

Aubrey has recently talked about his feeling towards many young musicians creating a false persona of themselves for them to be viewed as “untouchable” or “powerful”. In the song “Two Birds, One Stone”, drake tells rappers to stop trying to be or become something they are not. “Still they try and tell you I'm not the realest, like I'm some privileged kid, that never sat through a prison visit, or like it was just handed to me tied with a ribbon, I never worked to get it, but really it's you with all the drug dealer stories, that's gotta stop, though” the wise Aubrey says on a track from his upcoming album “More Life”. Canada, a notion state in North America, is known for its multicultural society across the world. Like any other nation state, Canada went through stages of acceptance and denial throughout history, before adopting multiculturalism as a policy in 1971, through Pierre Trudeau, who visioned Canada as a multicultural nation. Historically, when Canada first embraced the policy: immigration, in order to create jobs and boost Canada’s economy, immigrants from Europe and America were most desired and favored. This was to maintain Canada’s ‘British identity’(idea led by Clifford Sifton) and as a result, immigrants of color faced discrimination. However, unlike history, in modern Canada, there are many people from other nation-states living within
Hip Hop was the wildfire that started in the South Bronx and whose flames leapt up around the world crying out for change. James McBride’s Hip Hop Planet focuses on his personal interactions with the development of Hip Hop culture and his changing interpretations of the world wide movement. Many of his encounters and mentions in the text concern young black males and his writing follows an evolution in the representation of this specific social group. He initially portrays them as arrogant, poor, and uneducated but eventually develops their image to include the positive effects of their culture in an attempt to negate their historical misrepresentation.
Music is a powerful force that people make every day. Music expresses what one person is feeling and it can pass on and relate to others. Whether it the beats or the lyrics of music it can make us feel a certain way. Many rappers though out the years use their voice to speak up for the people that believe they do not matter. Music gathers people together because we relate to the lyrics that are being said.
Hip Hop is seen as something inspiring, but most people see it as a way to speak out the truth about a problem. As in “Hip Hop planet” being able say the truth can sometimes worsen any situation because sometimes what we say can promote violence and whatever happens after is not in our control. The essay is about how hip hop has changed into speaking out the issues that need to be taken care of in order to maintain a proper society. McBride talked about how rappers use violent lyrics to degrade women and gays and because of this it shows how the music has evolved into something entirely different that no one would have ever expected to have changed. In James McBride's essay “Hip Hop Planet,” he argues that hip hop has a negative influence on American Culture despite people thinking of it as inspirational and how people live through different experiences in life despite of your race.

Some of the main cores of Beat Street are the music, dancing, and graffiti art works – all of which are part of hip-hop culture. Scholars note that hip-hop as a movement originated in roots from African American traditions and are mainly used to express their culture as well as identity (Blanchard 24). Rap music, for example, comes from West Africa’s “nommo.” This idea refers to the power to deliver words to act upon objects and to bring it to life. The historical and traditional underpinning of rap, therefore, becomes representative of the rich and distinctive culture of African Americans.
A general description of the culture: Previously, the culture of Canada throughout the country was heavily influenced by the British and the French and their own indigenous people [Loue, S; Sajatovic, M; 2011].
