With confidence and victory in the air the Americans had ended the Revolutionary War. They had hope for freedom, economic independence, proper representation, equality, and an independent government free from tyranny. As years passed, citizens would find that their new independent country would not become the one promised by the outcome of the American Revolution. Although there were many political, economic, and social changes, both good and bad, from the 1820s to 1876 American would not see improvement towards the country they had hoped for until the Civil War era. Some political goals of the American Revolution were self-governance and a government free from corruption and oppression, like the one they believed England had. Americans would …show more content…
However, not all of these changes would reflect positively on the goals the Americans hoped to achieve during this time. The American’s had fought for taxation only with the proper representation, and although they would get to elect certain government officials, often times the citizens would not agree with the way and how much they would be taxed. In 1828 the government imposed a tariff meant to protect the new domestic manufacturers from established foreign manufacturers. The South labeled this as the Tariff of Abominations because the largely agricultural area, who relied on the imported goods, now had to pay the costly taxes. The northern industrialized region of the country, where they manufactured their own goods, was not affected by the tariff nearly as much, so the people in the South felt as if the North was being favored by the government. Even though the young country found some issues with tariffs, technical advances would help them to secure economic independence. Inventions such as the mechanical reaper, steel plow, and the sewing machine helped America to rely less on imported goods and focus on harvesting land for better economic opportunity. This opportunity, however, was not afforded to everybody. The poor and the freed slaves found it extremely difficult to rise out of poverty. After the war, lands were not redistributed and many people were forced into sharecropping. This meant that workers had to buy seeds and equipment to farm on the owner’s land on credit, which was then subtracted from the profit made off of the crop. Workers using the sharecropping system almost never made enough money to buy their own land or become debt free from the land owner. During the 19th century American had achieved the goals of proper taxation and becoming an economically independent country, but I believe that Americans were far from the economy they had been promised by the
The Revolutionary war was revolutionary, especially for the colonies. This statement was supported by how much land was available to them, and even the prices of each everyday item differed. If the colonists didn’t win the revolution, or if the revolution didn’t take place, things would have turned out differently. Along with that, they were now independent, and not following their home country, England. Other lower class colonists felt more equal to rich and upper class colonists, as shown in Document 3, where the lower class colonists were shown enjoying a game with more upper class men, and most likely richer people.
The main reason the revolution was fought was to free the states from the British government, which was exercising too much control and power over the colonies. With these Acts, especially the Sedition which contradicts freedom of speech, the American government was taking too much power over the people, which could have led to an autocratic government. As a result of these actions taken by Adams, I would have voted for
The tariffs are customs duties applied to imports of products with two fundamental purposes, on the one hand being a source of income for the State and on the other, to protect certain sectors of the economy when importing products that can compete with domestic production. In 1828, Congress approved the "tariff of abominations," a crushing and hard tariff that explicitly sacrificed one part of the country to another. Northern manufacturers were getting almost all the benefits of protection, while southern farmers were forced to pay higher prices for comparatively lower US products and lost their cotton export markets because of foreign retaliation against the United States. In 1832, Congress raised tariffs even more. South Carolina declared
When looking at the social and political changes that took place during the early American colonies you can see a steady progression towards ideologies that would lead to the Revolution. When you have different levels of government being put in place by the states depending upon their needs, where rural areas had different court systems than more urban areas, you see a level of independence for governance that the colonists began to see the benefit of having, separate from the rule of the Crown. To counter this increase in independence. the Crown implemented ever changing political positions that could be assigned to those who were loyal to the Crown and the social hierarchy that was prevalent in Britain at the time. These actions of corruption
The American Revolution is arguably the turning point of American history as it resulted in somewhat of a significant, positive change in politics, economics, and society as a whole. However, from 1775 to 1800, the effects of the revolution on the American society were subtle as most principles glorified by revolutionists contradicted the examples set forth by colonial reality. Perhaps most alike to revolutionary beliefs was the American economy and how it participated in free trade or encouraged the independence of hard labor. Politically, the states did apply Enlightenment and republican ideas as promised, but more often than not, the benefits of such ideas were limited to rich, land-owning, protestant, white men. This glorification of
Ryan Nelson Ms. Graham US History 20 October 2017 The Influential and Social Effects of the Revolutionary Era The revolution brought about innovation through new ideas and the abolition of old traditions and laws. One of our founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin was one of the many who was able to rise to the top at the prime of the era because of his intelligence and charisma.
When Congress issued tariffs on foreign goods, Southerners believed that Congress favored the North since this tariff would benefit them. John Randolph spoke of this issue, arguing that Congress was being unfair since the South was not benefiting from the actions of Congress at all while the North benefited (Doc A). As for political conflict, there was a clear case of factionalism and political rivalry in 1824 (Doc I). With these conflicts amongst the varying factions and political parties, the political tension and sectionalism within America continued to grow. Accusations and anger from the South further separated them from the North, which did not contribute “good feelings” to the country at
The Revolutionary War was a breakaway for all of us, a method to assume Glory and return home basked in the limelight of Honor, but it soon became apparent that our fragile Nation had no stratagem for the recuperation of our citizens and the Establishment of Government. The Development of Glory from the Blood of the War is a cause turned better by legend. Confronted with the monumental scope of constructing a Country, the leaders we looked up to in the trenches saw to us unfit for national Control, and as our people returned to the throes of life apart from battle, the Stipulations promised upon Patriotism soon became inutile on popular Belief. In the aftermath of the Security promised to us by our Victory, it soon became self-evident that
We may be used to all the freedoms and opportunities we have in the United States today, but that was not always the case. It wasn’t until 1776 until America had finally earned its independence from the British. With colonist gaining frustration and anger from their treatment from Great Britain, they eventually seeked their own independence to govern themselves. This was exceedingly important because it was the first time in history a group was able to break off the powerful British Empire and showed that they weren’t unstoppable.
The cultural factors of America were a strong influence towards the cause of the American Revolutionary War. In 1692 the majority of settlers in New England were Puritans, and rumors of witches were being spread through out the entire Massachusetts colony. Women were primarily victims of being witches and any women could be accused at any time. The ideas of witches, or witchcraft were threatening to the Puritan faith and sent a wave of fear through out New England. As a solution the colonist conducted the Salem Witch Trials.
A revolution is a large-scale rebellion with the intent to change or get rid of the current political system. The American Revolution was a fight to be free from British rule. People were tired of being controlled. The colonists of America wanted to create their own government where they could get what they left Europe for. While some may argue that the American Revolution did not change life for minorities, the American Revolution changed the political, economic, and social atmosphere and set the stage for future change.
After the Revolutionary War had come to an end, there were many challenges the thirteen colonies had to face. There were many economic, poverty, and social problems within the country. American citizens had a difficult time to adjust to the new national problems. It severely impacted them. These problems arose with a weak government established by the Articles of Confederation.
The invention of the cotton gin decreased labor and increased the production of usable cotton and the demand for items being made from it. Advancements being made in both water and land transportation led to explosive growth in cities and factories; thus improving the national economy little by little. All in all, the revolution taking place in the Americas after the war of 1812 turned the nation into the successful, worldwide marketplace we know of
The Revolution influenced extreme changes in the principles and opinions American people. Instituting the Republican ideals that affected the cultural society through social customs. In the late 18th century, the Republican Ideals terminated the British monarch’s authority and limited the governing power to elected officials, appealing to many of the colonist of different classes. The Republican Ideals after the Revolutionary war encouraged individuals to strive for equal rights especially with roles of gender and race along with the actions of separating church and state.
Impact of American Revolution through time Almost all aspects of the lives of Americans were somehow affected by the spirit of the American Revolution. The attitudes of American people towards religious life, women’s rights, voting and slavery were changed forever because of it. There was a drastic change in social and political life after independence.
