Activity theory, as interpreted by Ph.D. candidates, Wardle and Kain, is a process that attempts to see all aspects of activity such as social interactions and use of writing and language to achieve goals. This theory is award winning. Activity theory states that for a system to be effective, the rules, community, subject, division of labor, and motives must be reasonable. These components are shown through the chosen tool of communication most often. When one area of the system is corrupted, the tool will no longer function correctly in order to communicate or achieve its goals. Rhetorical analysis is also important for a determining if a tool is well functioning. This method helps to establish credibility, methods, and effectiveness of a …show more content…
25%), as opposed to women (approx. 17%) (Sternheimer). However, both genders are the subjects of this text. In the text, “How to Defend Yourself,” several areas of each of these methods are broken down, causing the text to be less clear and effective. The division of labor in the texts requires too much effort on behalf of the reader and too little on the writer because it assumes that the reader will supplement the reading with other resources. The credibility of the article is severely lacking as the author’s name is not listed, nor are any sources listed providing evidence to support that the methods listed in the article will work. This article relies on the assumption that the reader will not question the statements made, but if he or she does doubt the credibility, this could cause grave consequences, inhibiting the eventual goal of this text: lowering the instances of and surviving an attack. The stakes of this text being ineffective are: death, injury, rape, theft, and mental …show more content…
If the argument of rhetorical analysis is that observations and inferences are how one gathers information quickly and accurately, it points out serious flaws in the presentation of the tool. The author of the article is never listed. Why does the article assume that one blindly trusts information on the internet? Also, there are no sources for the information given in the article (How to Defend Yourself). Critically thinking, this author could be anyone, and most likely is not an expert in self defense. Without cited material, one could assume that the instructions are made up and move on without committing any information to memory. This may not be as great of a factor of inhibition as the division of labor fault, but if realized, this mistake could in actuality derail the entire motive. The credibility of this text is important because the stakes of ignoring the tool’s advice could be disastrous. This is where activity theory and rhetorical analysis overlap: when the outcome is meant to be lower rates of death, injury, rape, etc., but the subjects don’t utilize the text, the system breaks
Then we will show the importance of rhetorical figure of speech used by the author. We
Rhetorical Strategies-
The foundations for a good Rhetorical analysis are there it takes into account the purpose, the audience, the rhetorical devices used, and the if they are used effectively or not; however it does not go into the depth needed about the points that are being made and show how they are impactful to the audience stated. I plan to leave the intro and closing paragraph alone for the most part and beef up the body paragraphs with more analysis while touching up grammatical errors when
The study group had wanted to see if peoples ' attitudes changed if they were exposed to external stimuli encouraging the reinforcement for change. They wanted to do so in a controlled laboratory environment. 3. “Experimental social psychology offered the possibility that the questions of traditional rhetoric might be solved within the framework of controlled experiments” (p.190).
The Rhetorical canon can be used as a tool that will allow you to effectively think about situations and analyze many different points of view which allows different arguments for their rhetorical strategies and their devices. It has been said that the rhetorical process is considered a way to get your point across with a manageable therefore distinct argument to win someone’s opinion. To me it can be considered to be objective that rhetoric is one way to illustrate useful arguments for those who want to inadvertently trick or outwit their audience and try and hide or conceal their real intentions, therefore someone who just wants to connect the truth could be candid and would not need rhetorical tools. This, yet, is not a valid point.
Rhetorical questions are used to encourage writers to think about the author’s side of an argument. William McRaven, a chancellor of the University of Texas, asks,
no one was going to beat her at anything. This will help them remain focused on their goals, other than rant that they are poor or disadvantaged. This will help people in their daily lives and interactions to become better. Rhetorical analysis is a branch of literature where critical reading and thinking is necessary which is much needed in the field of nursing. In rhetorical analysis, the reader analyzes the author, the audience, the subject, and rhetorical
Rhetoric is the art or discipline that deals with the use of discourse, either spoken or written, to inform or persuade or motivate and audience. Rhetoric is used consciously and subconsciously and can be used as a great tool for furthering education and thought, but it can be completely unethical. Charles Vivian AP Language Mrs. Vanbrocklin Journal for EGR Chapter 1 Quote from the Story My Thoughts People are being persuaded to act, think, and do certain things through language or symbols. And that process, perhaps, at least in part, is what makes up the study of rhetoric. (pg 3) I thought for a first page of a first chapter that this had a really solid, basic definition of “rhetoric.” Consider this definition from The American Heritage Dictionary (pg 3)
The general use of theory is to explain the questions of why, or why a particular event or phenomena occurs (Sutton & Staw, 1995). Theory in rhetorical criticism is the particular lens the critic uses to evaluate and craft an argument. This effects how a rhetorical critic uses evidence to support their argument. Collecting data, in the form of field notes or surveys, is important to methodologies like quantitative and qualitative studies, a strong argument is the support, logic, and evidence needed in rhetorical criticism (Christians, 2001).
Rhetorical Analysis Writer have different way of getting their point across, like in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid? By Nicholas Carr. He makes an argument that google is a convenient tools and is making us less able to process deep information. He use ethos, pathos, logos and tone to prove his ideas. Rhetorical strategies are a variety of parts that make up an essay. The strategies include everything from explaining a process, to structure of writing. Whether the author 's purpose is to entertain, inform, or persuade, ultimately these strategies will strengthen not only the author’s purpose, but also the writing itsef. Typically when authors use these strategies, they are very precise to how they use them, and when deeply analysing a piece of writing, this is very clear. In Bell Hooks’ “Understanding Patriarchy”, she used rhetorical strategies to convey her purpose.
As a class assignment, we were to read five different rhetorical, persuasive, argumentative peices and examine their use of rhetoric to determine if it was an effective peice or not. We then chose one article to to write an essay on to discuss its rhetorical effectiveness. I had decided to write my essay on the article that I saw as the most effective as oppossed to the least. We brought our first drats into class, disscussed the articles, and had a peer editing/review session.

In recent years, we have seen a staggering amount of mass shootings and other such acts of violence, and many believe that it stems from the amount of violence portrayed in media. Media in this definition could mean the news, books, movies, television shows, or video games.
