Writing is an essential part of an individual’s success. Writing comes in many forms, and it is not only used in an English course. It can be an email to a college professor, a resume, a lab report, a hotel review, etc. There are countless forms are writing, and it is important to understand how to approach each piece of writing. By understanding the conventions of different writing genres, one can effectively tailor ones writing to suit the specific genre they are writing in. This will help one to communicate their ideas more effectively, engage their readers, and ultimately improve their writing skills. In other words, what is the overall goal of the writing that they are trying to take in? By having audience awareness, one can choose the appropriate tone, language, and style to connect with the reader and effectively convey the overall message. The purpose of discourse is the “discussion of a single subject by multiple rhetor and audiences” (Grant-Davie 265). Clearly, the audience is a vital factor in rhetorical situations. Peter Elbow claims in “Closing My Eyes as I Speak: An Argument for Ignoring Audience”, audience is important but sometimes should be placed on the backburner during the writing process. He says that thinking about the audience while writing can sometimes affect our style of how we write. I agree with Elbow that this is true. I believe that thinking about the audience during the writing process can influence how the finished product will look. I also think that we as the writer have a choice as to who are audience can be.

Rhetoric is used in a variety of contexts, including politics, law, business, and education. In addition, the special subject of rhetoric is the human mind. Rhetoricians must understand how the human mind works in order to be persuasive.
Over the course of the semester, my main goal was to become a more precise writer and develop my identity as a writer. According too, the Portfolio Letter assignment sheet, becoming a better writer consists of precise planning, draft and revising. It also includes understanding a variety of academic genres by examining the basic characteristics that defines each type. In order too efficiently meet my goal of becoming a better writer, it was very important to have my work evaluated by others and myself as well. The use of rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking, reading and writing all are the important aspects in this course.
On essay #3, which was analyzing a visual argument, I identified the audience of a Smokey the Bear ad and wrote the following about it, “Although targeted to children with his very cartoony appearance, the message he conveys goes for people of all ages and groups. The vivid and colorful imagery draws people of all ages in so it can convey a very harsh and not very joyful message with a serious tone.” In this quote from my writing you can see that I effectively identified the audience and explained how the ad tailored itself to fit that audience. Along with this point, the quote also shows I also knew the audience of my own writing, which would be a professor and my peers, and tailored my writing to them. I say this due to the fact that the quote was written very formally.
The next aspect is the style of the writing. I tend to focus on the transition and the continuity in the sentence and paragraph so that the readers will not lose their focus during reading. Lastly, the vocabulary used in the writing. By vocabulary, I don’t mean big and sophisticated words but the variation used throughout the writing. To be exact, the word choice used in the wsriting so that there is no same words sound repetitive and redundant in the writing.
When taking the audience, purpose and content into consideration, the writing becomes more evolved and meaningful. For instance, writing with the purpose in mind allows the writer to begin strategizing the content of the paper and the perspective toward the topic. Such as, thinking about a source that will help the purpose of your writing, whether it is to entertain, compare, enlighten, and inspire, etc. influences the writing process. By knowing who the audience is provides the writer to select information and utilize a writing tone to persuade or influence them. First and foremost, understanding the audience by asking yourself questions, like who are the readers, what do they already know about the topic, and what do they need to know, etc.
