There are many writers that affect our emotions or that make us think that his or her statements are reasonable, whether they are authors of books, or script writers for a movie or a play. In Morgan Spurlock’s film, Supersize Me, he uses three common rhetorical strategies: ethos, pathos, and logos. He uses all three effectively, however pathos has the greatest effect out of all three rhetorical strategies. Spurlock uses ethos, or ethical appeal, in his film. The definition of ethos is the underlying sentiment that informs the beliefs, customs, or practices of a group or society. The definition of pathos is the quality or power in an actual life experience or in literature, music, speech, or other forms of expression, of evoking a feeling of pity, or of sympathetic and kindly sorrow or compassion. In other words, it is a way that authors and/or writers get to the audience’s emotions. Spurlock uses pathos by affecting the emotions of his audience with children. The beginning of the documentary shows kids singing and dancing. That automatically affects people’s emotions. It can either make them ‘awe’ or maybe even bring joy to their hearts listening to the little kids sing. Another way he appeals to the audience emotionally is with a testimonial effect. A girl was being interviewed about what she has done to lose weight. She was saying that it was extremely difficult for her to lose weight, and she felt like she could not do it. People may feel sorry for her. During his thirty days, Spurlock starts feeling ill. He decides to call his mom, and she tells him how she feels about his experiment. It makes the audience feel pity for him and his mother. Also the music that he uses during those specific scenes. As this generation calls it, it gets people in their feels. People start thinking about how he feels, and it put them in his shoes. Spurlock drives people in the movie with his emotional appeal. It makes the audience want to keep watching
An example of ethos from Brutus is,“Then none have I offended. I have done no more to Caesar, than you shall do to Brutus. The question of his death is enrolled in the Capitol; his glory not extenuated, wherein he was worthy, nor his offences enforced, for which he suffered death. ”(III.ii.32-35) Ethos are ethical appeal or also said to be what's right vs. wrong. In that quote Brutus uses ethos to say that he has done the right thing to save Rome from Caesars rule.
Blink written by Malcom is an argumentative based research book about how our adaptive subconscious plays a huge part in every day life. It also tells of the pros and cons of our adaptive subconscious. In Gladwell’s Blink he used different forms of rhetoric to persuade us, the readers, of his point successfully. Gladwell uses multiple counts ethos and logos in his writing to get his point across along with pathos, analogies, rhetorical questions, and irony. He also uses his tone and diction to assist his writing.
Rhetorical Analysis of David Brook’s “People Like Us” The goal of argumentative writing implies the fact of persuading an audience that an idea is valid, or maybe more valid than somebody else’s. With the idea of making his argument successful, and depending on which topic is being established, the author uses different strategies which Aristoteles defined as “Greek Appeals”. Pathos, the first appeal, generates emotions in the reader, and it may have the power of influencing what he believes. Ethos, or ethical appeals, convince the reader by making him believe in the author’s credibility.
The main plot archetype in A Little Romance is “The Quest”. One reason why the plot archetype is “The Quest” is because the plot of Lauren and Daniel fulfilling their goal directly imitates the archetype. Sparked by the incident of Julius telling Lauren and Daniel about the legend of kissing under the Bridge of Sighs, Lauren and Daniel’s quest is to kiss follow the legend in order to seal their love forever. Two lessons were taught in A Little Romance: the importance of keeping love alive and determination in spite of all odds.
Ethos is when one gives credibility. President Johnson has credibility in his speech when he claims, “Mr. Speaker, Mr. President, Members of the congress…” Mr. President also uses ethos when he states “...at the request of your beloved speaker, and the senator from Montana, the majority leader, the Senator from Illinois, the minority leader, Mr. McCulloch, and other members of both parties, I came here tonight…” These are example of ethos by giving credibility to everyone he mentioned. Aside from ethos there is pathos. Pathos is the passion in a speech or writing.
Ethos is “the character and credibility of the writer in the eyes of the reader.” An example of this is, “We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions..”. The author shows their credibility by stating they are representatives of the United States of America. The authors also portrayed this by, “In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms.”
Pathos is a rhetorical device used for providing emotion to the reader. He wants the reader to feel sympathetic towards the mistreatment of African-Americans. In the introduction, the first rhetorical device he introduced is pathos. Coates present pathos when he introduced Clyde Ross. He titles the first chapter as, “So that’s just one of my losses”.
Ethos is credibility appeal in rhetoric, it's the the appeal of ethics and it convinces the audience that the speaker is reliable. For example, Mr.Gilmer uses Pathos when making Mayella explain what happened on the supposed day Tom abused and took advantage of her, the reasoning is that in the book it says “Mayella stared at him and burst into tears. She cover her mouth with her hands and sobbed. ”lee241 When this scene happened Mr.Gilmer was questioning Mayella. This showed a negative holistically in the argument; Pathos was strengthened because of the reason it appealed the audience emotion making them feel bad for her, this helped the argument because the audience felt emotion when Mayella was crying this might cause an unbiased audience to feel and think that Tom could possibly be guilty. Also, Mr.Gilmer used Ethos appealing to the audiences good morals for this reason
By comparing the use of ethos, logos, and pathos, in the speeches made by Brutus and Antony, it becomes clear that Antony is more persuasive. Even though the speech made by Brutus had some moments where it was superior overall it wasn’t as persuasive and Antony’s. Antony’s speech successfully convinces the crowd through the three elements being examined. Ethos is credibility for the speaker, by having ethos it becomes easier for the speaker to convince the crowd of something.
In the movie Lean on Me, Joe Clark persuades the staff and students that hard work is necessary in order to be successful through the use of ethos, pathos, and logos. Throughout the movie Joe Clark persuades the staff and students to work hard in order to be successful by using ethos. For example, when Joe goes to meet the students he uses ethos to show the hard truth and consequences for being young adults. Another way he uses ethos is after Joe found out the scores on the practice test and had a meeting with the teachers explaining that they had to do more to help the students learn.
The use of ethos, pathos, and logos in any type of writing or speaking can create a commanding and arresting effect on the reader/listener.

It like a endorsement deal with celebrity. Nike uses the most ethos to draw the age groups together to sell the product by signing endorsement deals with athletes.
