Who was Robert E Lee? I was born on January 19, 1807 in Stratford Hall, Virginia. My father, Henry, was a hero during the American Revolutionary War where he earned the nickname "Light Horse Harry". My mother, Ann Carter, came from a wealthy family. Despite my family's pedigree, we were not rich. My father had made some bad business deals and lost all of the family's money. When I was two years old, my dad went to debtor's prison. A few years later my dad went to the West Indies and never returned. Becoming a soldier, since my family didn't have any money, I saw the military as a great way to get a free education and to have a career.
I entered the West Point Military Academy at the age of 18 and graduated in 1829 near the top of the class.

He was protesting slavery in the South and was hoping to start up a revolt among the slaves. I was in charge of a group of Marines sent in to stop the raid. Once I arrived, the Marines quickly subdued John Brown and his men. Once again, I had made a name for myself. When the Civil War began in 1861, I was offered command of the Union Army by President Lincoln. I, however, was also loyal to my home state of Virginia. Although I didn't agree with slavery, I felt I could not fight against my home state. I left the United States Army and became General of the Confederate Army of Virginia. As commander of the Army of Northern Virginia I took control of one of the most important armies during the Civil War. The Virginia army fought many of the key battles of the eastern front. I chose talented officers such as Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson and Jeb Stuart. Although the Confederate armies were constantly outnumbered by the Union armies, me and my men managed to win many battles through our brilliance and

Write about the commanding abilities of any civil war commander we have learned about so far this year. Please respond in at least 300 words. In this writing I am going to be talking about a man that had a major impact on not only the Civil war, but also the process with abolishing slavery and fighting against the Confederates and their beliefs. The event of the protesting of General Robert E. Lee and his statue has become a hot topic among people of varying ages. I believe that Robert E. Lee was wrong to fight for the south. But I also believe that the people of america shouldn’t take down statues or monuments of history. A famous philosopher for the following quote is George Santayana. ”Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
Both Confederates and Union troops had good leaders; Lincoln and his administration along with his generals like Ulysses E. Grant, William T. Sherman and George B. McClellan are two of the few. The Confederacy, was led by Jefferson Davis, helped mobilized the Confederacy; he had a very high military background, unlike Lincoln who only served in one war. On his side, he had Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Jeb Stuart, and Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard are some of the few leaders for the Confederate

The Civil War is known as the bloodiest war the U.S ever fought in, and many people volunteered, including Texans. Slavery has been splitting the U.S apart for a long time, and everyone knew that war would come eventually. Tension was building between the two sides, but the last straw for the South was when Abraham Lincoln, an anti slavery man, was elected for president. The Southern states then began to secede from the Union, with South Carolina leading. Texas was the 7th state to secede, but Sam Houston was forced to resign due to not taking the Confederate oath.
General Samuel Lee was perhaps the most prominent. General Lee was perhaps more qualified military personal than Washington to lead the rebel’s army, he served in the British Army fighting in several wars including the Seven Years War. He came to America because he thought that he would be made a leader, however he was dismayed when he learned that he would be under George Washington’s orders. After the battle at Fort Washington, Lee has even less confidence in Washington and believes he should be the man that will lead the troops to victory. Colonel Joseph Reed writes a letter to General Lee, supporting his ideas of a change in leadership.
Robert E. Lee’s (1807-1870) contribution to the United States as a war general and commander received positive connotations for his commitment, attitude and inspiration on the battlefield. However, it is debateable about his contributions because of Robert Lee’s association in the Civil War (1861-1865) to the Confederate Army that fought for the Southern States. Robert Lee lead many successful campaigns and battles including the following; helping defeat Mexican armies that lead to U.S land gains and westward expansion, battles against a more powerful army in the Civil War. Despite these achievements Lee’s loyalty for the Confederate Army that fought to uphold slavery undermines his success and is highly debateable about whether his contribution is justified or not. Robert Lee’s contributions to his nation begin before the Civil War in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).
