With the current election raging, illegal immigration has been the hot topic amongst both liberals and conservatives. Many conservatives believe that illegals steal jobs, abuse tax benefits, and, most importantly, threaten their way of life. Liberals, on the other hand, support immigration reform based purely on sympathy. They understand that many Latin Americans go through extreme measures to escape hopeless situations back home. While there’s nothing wrong with sympathy for our fellow humans, it may serve to be beneficial to look at immigration reform through the lens of reason. Due to this, we should be concerned with Mexico’s southern border. Mexico certainly wants to avoid becoming a transit country for those seeking asylum in the US. Although it may only seems like Mexico’s problem, but it is also ours. We should start to create a dialogue with Mexico on how to solve this problem. We also might look at the conditions in these countries that cause people to want to leave and parents to send their own children north. These are the real problems we need to confront in order to get total control of our borders. Meanwhile, our businesses understandably petition for a more generous H-1B visa program so they have more access to guest workers. The workers themselves want a way to come here to work and go home occasionally without worrying about the problem of returning. At the end of the day, we want to put the end to illegal immigration.
