School shootings and active shooter situations are one of the hottest topics in America right now. There is nothing more tragic than turning on the television or radio and hearing about the deaths of children. The primary argument is that no one can ever seem to agree on what the cause of these events are, and if they can be stopped before they occur. Lately it seems that there are more and more of these events occurring, however some researchers argue that this is not the case (Rocque, M. (2012). Others argue that while the events themselves may not be increasing the high amount of publicity these events get from the mainstream media makes it seem that they are occurring more frequently (Snell, C., Bailey, C., Carona, A., & Mebane, D. (2002). No one can seem to agree on how to stop these events from happening. Questions 1. Is there any one thing that relates all school shootings together, and if so how might we work to stop them before they happen? Many people which we see protesting school shootings on the news today are arguing for tighter gun control and saying that military style guns are the cause of these mass killings. The problem with this is that regardless of the type of gun used it is still a person pulling the trigger. Some researchers have done their work to show that most school …show more content…
Due to the multitude of news websites and social media such as Facebook as soon as something happens Americans know about it within minutes of its occurrence. This fast news stream can be a double edged sword because while it does make people aware of the situation to let them know what they should do if near the area it also gets the perpetrator national exposure, and when we look at the fact that the majority of mass shooters state they suffer from loneliness and depression they may view this as a way of becoming famous and getting the attention they have always wanted (Johnston, J. B.
The relentless media coverage of mass shootings like Columbine contributes to inspiring potential copycats and more acts of violence. Several studies have demonstrated a connection between media coverage of mass shootings in similar incidents that happen later, showing how the media accidentally encourages a so-called cycle of violence. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, intense media coverage and other publicity can contribute to an increase in the likelihood of similar events and tragedies occurring within the following weeks. This emphasizes the responsibility the media organizations have to report
A school shooting is a traumatic event that requires early and effective intervention. Children are vulnerable to psychological stress which can cause devastating effects without proper intervention. The goals of my intervention plan are to clarify the cause of the shooting, stabilize the situation as soon as possible, mobilize necessary resources, normalize of the situation, get the victims to safety and facilitate healing and access to help for those who need it. The first step will be an immediate action of mobilizing the necessary personnel and resources to aid in the intervention process.
What phenomena is there surrounding school shootings in the US? Why is there so much talk of mental health in anticipatory crime? Whether we see it or not, there is a phenomenon in surrounding school shootings in the US. This phenomenon is about society’s beliefs or expectations of school shootings. Most people in the 2000’s would associate violent movies, games, and “modern ideas” to acts of violence committed by youth. "
Students today live their day-to-day lives in constant fear of what seems inevitable. The United States has one of the highests rates of school shootings in the world. Society has become so desensitized to these shootings that they are no longer shocked to hear about another school falling victim to it. Even when students take a stand against gun violence, the only solution offered to them is a proposition to arm teachers. However, bringing more guns into a school will only further deteriorate the situation.
“There were 372 mass shootings in the U.S. in 2015, killing 475 and wounding 1870” BBC News reports. According to the statistic, mass shootings are happening everyday and even every minute an hour. Mass shooting is a huge public concern. Therefore, when a shooting occurs, media would often report the shooting with bloody detail, surprised statistics, and influential old shooting. Moreover, the media are the biggest fear mongers which create public panic to the society by using various methods.
Our country appears as the most powerful entity in the world, yet it seems nearly impossible for change to occur to protect the lives of children and teachers. Frankly, school shootings do take place in other countries, but the difference in frequency is how legislation is handled after these devastations. For instance, 16 children died in a Scottish school in 1996 when a man opened fire there. As a result, they have banned firearms in Britain. In Germany, a gunman shot and killed 16 people in 2002 at his old school.
One method of deterring an active shooter was stated as arming select teachers within schools in order to effectively end the situation and protect the students. The idea of arming teachers would simply be changing concealed carry laws in states so that teachers could potentially fight back against a school shooter. This idea, while having some kinks to work out has good intentions and would save numerous young lives in this kind of situation. The teachers carrying firearms would be trained and they would need to receive training often to continue carrying their gun on school grounds.
Over two thirds of American parents are concerned about their children’s safety at school following the Columbine Massacre (Madfis, 2016) and other high-profile school shootings in the US. Are their concerns justified? Having examined a report by (Borum, Cornell, Modzeleski, & Jimerson, 2010) which addresses this question by reviewing a range of empirical evidence, I feel as though it is safe to say that American schools are safe and the publicity of the rare shooting cases creates a grandiose perception of danger and causes unnecessary fear. The report also explains why there is a miscomprehension regarding the occurrence of school shootings and provides insight on how school shootings could be prevented. The first ‘desperate’ measures following the school shootings were to suggest that teachers should have handguns with them
This article has great viewpoints, use of argumentative reasoning, and shows what truly happens in the hallways of a school shooting. The main person he explains is Eric Harris, who killed over two-thousand students and faculty in a Colorado high school in 1998. He set off bombs all over the school and used a semi-automatic
What is a school? A school is designed to be a safe haven for children to go to five days a week to receive an education. What happens when a student steps into his or her school one morning with a weapon, and immediately erases any sense of peace and safety that once existed there? What causes a child to intentionally fire on fellow classmates and faculty? What could possibly be done to prevent these situations?
A human thrives off of attention, even the shy introvert begs for it. Most Americans and people around the world watch other people make history and become infamous for acts of courage and acts of deceit. Whether a person goes down in infamy or goes down with tremendous honor, this person has altered history forever. In reality the world has heroes and villains, and these real life villains thrive for heed. The increase in mass shootings starts with the shooter’s addiction to fame and the chance of becoming notorious for their dishonorable deed.
The problem with gun violence in schools has existed for years, and something should be done to eliminate the problem that endangers students who attend schools every day. One recent incident with gun violence in schools occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School where several young children were killed and many others injured (Elliott 529). Also, a bombing incident in 1927 killed thirty-seven children and was likely the start of school gun violence (Elliott 529). Children, who attend schools, sometimes do not feel safe because of the problem with gun
A nonprofit group that attempts to prevent gun violence called “Everytown for Gun Safety,” released a statement about school shootings. The organization claimed that the school shooting at “[Marjory Stoneman Douglas High] is the 18th school shooting in the U.S. in 2018.’” (Cox and Rich). In less than three months, there have been eighteen school shootings. This shows that schools are no longer a safe environment.
Informative Speech Going Out with a Bang General Purpose: To inform. Specific purpose: To inform my audience about the causes of school shootings in America. Central Idea: The main causes for school shootings are easy access to guns, mental instability and trauma. INTRODUCTION I. (Attention Getter)
Most of the suspects of mass shootings are young males who usually commit the crime on their own with careful planning of the event. Most perpetrators have a fascination with weapons and the shootings usually occur in broad daylight in public places (Frances). There is an obvious difference in the brain of mass shooters to those of non-mass shooters. Low orbital cortex activity may be the main difference between the two groups of people. About 1 in 100 people are psychopaths, there was a study that was done at UC Irvine by James Fallon where he used a PET scan to measure brain activity.
