SEXUAL HARASSMENT Critical Analysis Process Questionnaire Describe your topic in one sentence? Sexual harassment is described as unwelcome sexual advances, request or demand for sexual favors or any physical or verbal sexual conduct that is made to appear either implicitly or explicitly as the condition for one’s employment, favorable working environment or advantageous employment decision from a person of authority. Why did you select this topic? Sexual harassment has been a topic of discussion for a long time. However, before one or two years ago, the discussion was about how victims find it difficult to speak out about it for fear of shame, ridicule or no one believing them. Since late 2017, sexual harassment has become a major …show more content…
In fact, in some cases, accused sex offenders have been turned into victims by being wrongly convicted. I will support my argument by showing previous cases where the accused suffered physical, emotional or psychological torture due to allegations of sexual misconduct which after a trial, were proved innocent of. I will further show other cases where the accused was convicted and served time, but the discovery of further evidence acquitted them of the crime. What may social and cultural influences have influenced your point-of-view on this topic? With my education and values, I have a keen eye for challenges faced by any minority group. The accused side of the story is not very popular in media coverage or any debate on sexual harassment. There is a need therefore for someone to listen to their pleas. Do you have a predisposition toward this topic already? (i.e. existing attitudes, beliefs, opinions?) If so, state that belief in one sentence. Yes, I am pre-disposed towards this topic in that my belief of one should be innocent until proven guilty still seems like the best foundation of any society when it comes to legal …show more content…
Lacey Carroll’s claims in October 2007 of sexual assault by famous illusionist David Copperfield were thrown out and investigations dropped after the accuser was arrested for making false accusations against another businessman. This vindication on David Copperfield’s part had however taken two long years in which period he says his life was turned upside down. (Aiello, 2018) What may people have influenced your opinion on this subject? My opinion may have been influenced by the recent cases coming out of individuals who have served jail time for crimes they were innocent of. For instance, Jemma Beale, a 25-year-old who was jailed for false sexual assault and rape claims had a list of fifteen victims among them Mahad Cassim who had already served two years in jail. Another victim of Jemma had fled the country after his reputation was ruined following the accusations. What experience do you have in connection with this
In her magazine article, “No, #MeToo Isn’t McCarthyism,” found in the January 2018 issue of The Atlantic, writer Sophie Gilbert refutes various criticisms targeting #MeToo, a recent social media campaign created to spread awareness of the frequency of sexual harassment and assault. She distinguishes serious sexual assault and harassment allegations from claims against men who are merely unpleasant by noting that the former is comprised of rape accusations, while the latter is only “a collection of misconduct allegations and rumors” (2). Critics of #MeToo have attempted to undermine the movement by arguing that it is a facade to allow people to falsely accuse others of sexual harassment and assault. As a result, the accused usually suffer from

Ordinarily, plenty of other acquitted individuals are not supported by their counties to uncovering convictions of the innocent and or don’t have the resources of quality lawyering. Moreover, these wrongful convictions will continue to rise, putting innocent people behind bars. In addition, it is understandable working with a few individuals to collect evidence an error can occur, ordinarily the reality of this is some agents of the legal system overlooked cruelty to have their name known.
Sexual Assault and Consent Reflection The sexual assault and consent article and speakers were both very detailed and did a good job in bringing full attention to the issue. This can be a sensitive and even uncomfortable subject for some, but I think it is something that needs to be brought to everyone’s awareness. Even though most people can say that they have not been personally affected by sexual assault, it is still always good to be informed about it and be made aware of the facts that prove why sexual assault can have many devastating and long lasting effects. And these effects are not just on the victim alone, but the friends and family that surround the victim as well.
The cultural and economic differences in women, recognition of the movement by a celebrity’s input and the influential impact of affluent women to cause a change are the main issues surrounding the article. ‘The Marginalized voices of the #MeToo movement’ is an article written by Eugene Scott on December 7, 2017, of a movement created for women of color to feel comfortable to speak out on sexual harassment issues. This movement gained recognition when actress Alyssa Milano tweeted #MeToo, but it was actually started a decade ago by Tarana Burke an activist from the Bronx. As more popular women went on to express their views on sexual harassment and share their experience it is believed now that the light is being taken away from the women in
Being convicted of a crime that you had nothing to do with must be the most frustrating feeling in the world. Although I had already started a previous research paper, my interest and attention was caught when I viewed an in class video by the name of The Farm: Angola, USA. There were two individuals named George Crawford and Vincent Simmons whose case caught my attention. George Crawford and Vincent Simmons case sounded a little sketchy in my opinion, and the thought of them being wrongfully convicted came to my mind. Although my paper is not about them, their stories inspired me to research about wrongful convictions and exonerations.

To see this trend that schools not following through on reported sexual assault cases is a huge disservice to their students and victims when it comes to supporting and educating the people are a part of the institution. A serious discussion and realization needs to come forth that there is much more that is needed to be done for people to realize that sexual assault does happen at almost every school, and more actions are needed in order to stop
Although it is a recurring issue, there is not enough evidence to justify reintroduction of anonymity for defendants in such cases. There is no denying the fact that media coverage influences the matter, particularly when presenting suspects to the public before trial may cause an innocent person to be wrongly blamed. However, they will be acquitted of sexual defences by magistrates like William Roache. He resumed his life and role after being found not guilty (BBC, 2014). There is no practical connection between the falsely accused person and sexual offense cases.
Several weeks ago, there was a national conversation about sexual harassment and assault with the #notokay moment. I spent some time reflecting on the experiences I 'd had in high school, college and as a young woman. My oldest daughter, who is in seventh grade, and I spoke about my experiences. I wanted her to know that she doesn 't need to accept being treated as prey and that she would be doing these boys a favor by informing a teacher or administrator if a boy touches her or makes lewd comments or otherwise harasses her. My thought was that some of these boys may have a man as a role model who is setting a poor example when it comes to respecting the dignity of others, and that early education/intervention could help the boys.
